"Good evening, and welcome to the Nightly Report. I'm Hamish Jordan."
"And I'm Vanessa Moore."
The normally professional veteran anchors for Australia's Channel Six seemed to be vibrating with anticipation, as if they knew the story they were about to deliver would make them superstars in the journalism world.
"On Monday night," said Hamish, "we brought you a story about Australians living in the United States who are rather enthusiastic about the candidacy of Senator Mark Robinson, who's running to become the second African-American President of the United States. The New York Senator continues to have a commanding lead in the polls, and is widely expected to become the 46th American President."
Vanessa continued. "Late last month, shortly after Senator Robinson secured his party's presidential nomination, the Nightly Report received a tip concerning Senator Robinson's connections to Australia--connections that were personal and in fact, quite intimate. Tonight, we bring you an exclusive and, we must note, rather contentious interview with a young woman from Senator Robinson's past--a young woman whose name may become notorious in American political history."
The Nightly Report producers then cut to a video package of a young woman, every bit as blonde as Vanessa, walking into a building and through a corridor. The young woman seemed a bit upset.
"Meet Kylie Maree Connolly," Vanessa proclaimed in a voiceover. "She is 31 years old and works in the admissions office of the University of New South Wales in Kensington. She's a typical Australian lady, you might say. She loves music, movies, good books, and especially travel. She visited New York City for her 25th birthday in July 2018...and what happened after that visit could change the course of American politics."
The video package then showed Kylie in her home, preparing a meal in her kitchen and looking through an open bedroom door.
"In April 2019, nine months after visiting New York City, Kylie gave birth to a healthy baby boy she named Edward. The father of her son was a New York State Assemblyman named Mark Robinson."
Kylie was then shown sitting on a couch in her living room, clearly distraught. Vanessa sat on a chair in front of her.
"I don't know how you found out," Kylie said. "It's just between us. I don't know why it even matters to the rest of the world."
"But you had to know it would come out," Vanessa replied.
"Not like this. There's no reason for it to come out like this. Who tipped you off?"
"We don't reveal confidential sources."
Kylie pursed her lips in anger.
"So, how did you two meet?"
"I assume your confidential source told you."
"Assume our confidential source got some of their facts wrong."
"Well, I'll tell you what happened."
The video package then showed B-roll footage of the New York City skyline and city streets as Vanessa spoke. "Kylie said she ran into Mark at a bar in Brooklyn. He offered to buy her a drink, she says. They talked for a bit. She told him she worked in education. He told her he worked in politics."
The editor cut back to Kylie. "He was so very charming...like an Idris Elba or a younger Denzel Washington...possibly even better," she laughed. "He told me I looked like Margot Robbie's twin sister. I'm not sure I look a thing like Margot Robbie."
"He was close," Vanessa replied.
