Sara bought two 'After-Workout Protein Refills' in the juice bar at the gym. She looked over at the table where Andrew sat. He was the realtor she sometimes chatted with at the gym. He was busy with his phone and had not noticed her, so she thought it would be nice to surprise him with a drink.
She paid with money she had earned by working in a lingerie store. Every time she paid for something with her earned money, she felt immensely proud of herself and her work.
She carried the drinks to Andrew's table. When she placed one of the drinks in front of him, he looked up from his phone in surprise.
"There you go. This is a lot better than your usual energy drinks," she said with a smile and sat beside him. She took it for granted that he wanted her company.
Andrew cracked up with a warm smile. "Sara! What a surprise!" he exclaimed. He gave her a once-over, not being covert about it. "You are looking good."
Sara giggled. The unexpected honesty in his comment felt good. She smiled back at him. "You are not looking so bad yourself," she replied. She blushed at making the candid comment.
His smile broadened as he looked at her. She looked back at him. He had kind eyes, and they made her feel safe. Approaching someone, especially a man, was out of her normal comfort zone.
He picked up the drink. "This was very sweet of you."
She smiled at him, still feeling proud she had bought it with her own money.
Soon, they were lost in conversation. Sara missed having someone to talk to, and it was so easy with Andrew. He was genuinely interested in her and listened to everything she said. It had been a while since they last met, and many things had happened. She talked about her job in the lingerie store and how proud she felt. Time was flying, and she had been working for two months already.
Andrew said that was great, and he was happy for her sake. He knew she was a housewife and had never worked before. She confessed some of the silly mistakes she had made in the beginning. They laughed at them together.
Sara got more serious. She confessed she would forever be thankful to Megan for believing in and supporting her. Megan was the shop manager. Andrew smiled at her with kind eyes and put his hand on hers. Sara's heart skipped a beat. It was the first time they had touched each other. It was only a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity before Sara withdrew her hand. She felt a tingling sensation from his touch.
To change the subject, she told Andrew that Robert had moved out and had started university. She told him it felt empty not to have him at home anymore. Andrew talked about how strange it felt to live separated from his children. He tried to see them as often as possible, but it was still hard. Sara knew he was divorced and could understand how difficult it must be for him. She tried to be sympathetic. It was easy to relate as they shared similar feelings.
Sara talked about Jennifer and her boyfriend. She told him how happy Jennifer seemed. Also, they had finally told Paul that she was dating and that it was serious. Andrew thought it was terrible that they had to keep it a secret in the first place.
Their drinks were over, and Andrew said he wanted to take Sara out one evening for a drink to repay her. It did not feel awkward or out of place when he asked her, but she hesitated. Going out with a man other than her husband was so far from what was decent as a married woman. She did not know what to feel or think. She told him she had never gone out with another man besides her husband. She needed to think about it.
Andrew smiled at her with his kind eyes. "Take your time. It's not like a date, but I can understand if you consider it a big thing."
Sara smiled back. It did not feel awkward, but her heart skipped a beat like when he had touched her.
"We could exchange phone numbers, and you can let me know," he suggested.
Later, as she drove home, she felt confused. She had exchanged phone numbers with Andrew, which was wrong in many ways. But at the same time, she liked talking with him, and she would not mind meeting him again.
A long time ago, when they met for the first time, he had hit on her and asked for her phone number. He had been smooth about it, but she declined. Having contact with another man other than her husband was inappropriate.
This time, she had not hesitated to take out her phone to exchange numbers when he asked. She asked him to tell her his number, and she called him. They could hear his phone ring in his bag.
"Give me your phone," she asked, closing the call. The whole idea of exchanging numbers felt naughty and made her playful. He rummaged through his bag and handed her his phone. It had a face ID. Andrew did not protest but smiled faintly when she held his phone before his face to unlock it. Sara had the same type of phone, so it was easy to navigate. Deftly, she opened the call log and saved her number into his address book. Then she leaned forward and dropped the phone into his bag again.
Sara smiled to herself as she sat in the car. She had not saved her number as 'Sara.' Instead, she had saved it as 'The Friendly Gym Girl.' She was sure he would love it when he discovered it.
She replayed their conversation in her head while driving. Besides touching her hand, Andrew had gently flirted with her. She blushed, thinking she liked it, and shyly flirted back. She had never flirted with a man before. Maybe back in the days when she was dating Paul before they got married. She got a warm feeling in her stomach when she thought of Andrew's hand on top of hers. Their eyes had met, and he had smiled at her. They had smiled an awful lot at each other while talking. Sara pressed her thighs together as she drove on. She felt confused about her feelings.
She shook her head to clear her mind as she pulled into the driveway at home. Once inside, she busied herself preparing dinner for her family. It felt good to go through her everyday evening routines. It distracted her from other thoughts.
Sara looked around the dinner table while they ate. There were two empty chairs. Robert had moved out to the university, and it was likely a long time before he would visit. Jennifer was with Daniel and not at home for dinner. She had been spending a lot of time with him lately.
It was muted at the dinner table. It had often been like that since Sara began working. Paul still did not agree that she worked and wanted her to quit and concentrate on being a housewife again. William was, as usual, taking his father's side and was sulking like his father. She loved her son but could not help feeling that he behaved childishly. She knew he loved his father to the point of idolizing him, but he was old enough to form his own opinions.
Jennifer had told Paul about her having a boyfriend. It had not been received too well. He had become upset and said she was too young for a boyfriend. He believed she should wait until she found the man she wanted to marry. Jennifer had argued and said that was not rational. Perhaps her boyfriend was Mr. Right, and he was the one she was going to marry. How could they know?
