[Chapter 1]
I'm Jack. Jack Callahan if it matters to you, but everyone just calls me Jack.
I was born at the Quantico Marine Corps Base, in Virginia, near Washington D.C., but mostly raised in California and Hawaii... aside from 3 years in Okinawa, Japan. Such is the life of a military family.
I was the 3rd and last kid in the family and the only boy. My dad was your typical barrel-chested Marine, who ate hammers and sh!t nails, a true warrior to the core & always true to the Corps. But he was also a great dad when he was home and despite my skinny, hell scrawny build, he taught me how to take care of myself and defend myself from anyone who made the mistake of thinking that scrawny meant weak. No matter how much my mom & sisters tried to 'baby' me, Dad wouldn't allow it. Well up to a point maybe, Dad was putty in the hands of 'his' girls, but he still made sure I became a man too.
I learned to swim on the beaches of Southern California, as a kid & basically became a 'fish'. Then, when I was in 6th Grade we moved from San Diego to Okinawa, and my parents enrolled me in Karate classes. We moved to Hawaii when I started High School, and the summer before I had grown 4" to 5'10" & gained 25 pounds, even though I was still only 170# soaking wet. But, my speed and agility more than made up for my lack of size, and I made the Varsity Football Team as a Freshman (I didn't start that year, but I did play in every game and finished the year with 3 interceptions). I also got my 1st surfboard, and resumed my previous life as a 'fish'.
By the time I graduated, I was a 4-year letterman in both Football and Wrestling, and I had gotten SCUBA certified, then Advanced Open Water, and finally Rescue Diver. I also got a job as a Life Guard on the Beach Rescue Team. My Senior Year, I got several offers to wrestle in college, and even 2 offers to play football (Division 2). Even though I had added another 15 pounds & an inch and a half to my height, I knew that at 5'11.5" & 185, I knew was never going to play in the NFL. I was also pretty much done with school (or so I thought at the time).
The Sept. 11th Attacks happened early in my Sophomore year. My oldest sister had just started University at U.H., but was living on campus (well most of the time). Mom & my 2nd older sister (H.S. Junior), and I stayed in our house in Hawaii too, but my dad did what my dad does, and went off to war. The next time we saw him was at my High School Graduation (having missed my sister's the previous year). When Dad made his 'surprise' appearance at my graduation, he promised my mother, he would never leave her again, and put in his retirement papers.
There was basically a weekend long party at North Beach, Kaneohe. There were 22 'Military' graduates in my High School class, the families of 21 of them spent 3 days & nights having 'Luau' (One girl's family had a funeral to deal with). Before breaking out into various groups of parents & kids, all of us graduates were asked by all of the parents "So _____ what are your plans now?"
