June 1980
"Hey," Gus said, looking at Mick and Sam as they cuddled in the corner of the long, orange couch. "I wanted to share something with you guys."
Mick looked at him, then over at the other end of the couch, where Bob reclined in the corner. Demi was next to him. Not quite touching him, but closer than normal. And not in her usual place in the third chair by Gus and Lois.
"Oh?"
Gus nodded, then swallowed. He paused, then Demi smiled at him.
"What Gus is trying to say," Demi said, looking at Mick and Sam, "is that I've decided to back away from our little... thing we have. I thought it was best to give Lois and Gus some space to figure out where their relationship is going."
Mick nodded, and Sam looked at the two of them with her eyebrows raised.
"Those two are so crazy in love," Demi said, smiling at Gus and Lois. Gus looked over and smiled back, and only Demi caught how his eyes seemed to water for a moment.
"We had great times, as you all know," Demi laughed, and the other chuckled with her. "I wanted to give them some space and figure things out. It's clear how much they love each other."
"We love you, too. Don't ever forget that," Lois said.
Gus nodded. "Yeah. Very, very much."
Demi smiled and blew him a kiss. "I know, and I'll always love you two as well."
"Wow," Sam said, looking around the group. Demi sat back, closer to Bob. He lifted his arm and draped it along the back of the couch behind Demi.
"Well, I guess I'm happy for you guys. I didn't see this coming, I guess," Mick said.
"Yeah, it's something I've been thinking about for a while now," Demi said. "But it's for the best."
Demi looked over at Bob and smiled warmly. He cleared his throat and said, "Yeah. Um... Yesterday Demi told me about all this, and, well... I asked Demi out." He looked over at Gus, then looked down.
He looked back up at Gus and said, "Dude, I know I should have asked you if it was okay. Things just sorta happened. I bumped into Demi at the Burger King, and we just started talking. She told me everything."
His arm dropped and went around her shoulders. Demi slid over and pressed herself against him.
"One thing led to another and... well, later, we talked it all out and I asked her if she'd go out with me, be my girlfriend. I figured after she and I..." Bob surprised everyone by blushing so red that he looked like he was having a heart attack.
Demi giggled, watching him get flustered, and continued for him. "What he's trying to say is that he swept me off my feet and before I knew it, he was humping my brains out in his van, parked behind the K-Mart after it closed."
She looked over at Gus and Lois and said, "I hope you're not mad at me. I think it's kinda obvious Bob and I have had an attraction to each other for some time. After he calmed down, we had a great talk, and want to be together."
"Yeah, it makes sense, you two together, and I have noticed." Gus said, then smiled at her. He looked at Lois, and she nodded.
"It does make sense, you know? There's a kind of symmetry to the group now, with you two together." Lois beamed at her friend. "We're happy for you guys. Really."
"We are happy for you." Gus looked at Bob. "You're a very lucky guy. Demi's the best. You two are gonna be great together as a couple"
"I know it." Bob grinned, nodding.
Lois smiled wickedly at them and wiggled her eyebrows at Bob and Demi. "Did you say, 'after he calmed down'? Just what does that mean?" Gus looked at Lois, wondering if she knew something.
"What I mean is it took Bob some time to get himself fully satisfied. You may not know this, but Bob has the endurance of a bull!" They gawked at their friend, who was still uncharacteristically shy and quiet.
"How many times?" Mick asked, a wicked grin on his face.
"Three!" Demi said. She giggled again and threw herself onto Bob, pulling his head down and kissing him deeply.
"Damn," Mick said, nodding his head. "You're gonna need some new shocks on that old van of yours, buddy!"

A few weeks later, the six of them sat at a large, round table. The two large pizzas that had recently been in front of them were now just a fond memory. The sounds of families talking and children playing arcade games nearby drifted over from across the large pizza parlor.
"Well," Bob said, sighing, "she did it."
"What?" Lois asked him.
"My mom moved. She rented a small truck and some of her friends came over today and loaded it up." He looked around the group. "She told me to come with her, but I don't want to move up there," he said, shaking his head. "All my friends are here!"
"So where are you gonna live?" Mick asked him, frowning.
Bob shrugged, his brows raised. "I don't know. I can sleep in my van, I guess. There's a bed in the back, and there's a shower at the K-Mart, where the mechanics get cleaned up I can use. I can find toilets at work, or at fast food places, I suppose. I can't afford rent on my own, not on what I'm making."
"What about Cindy?" Sam asked. "She's your sister."
Bob shook his head. "No, she's living with her boyfriend, and they only have a small apartment."
"I wish you could stay with me," Mick said. "But my dad's such a jerk sometimes, you don't want to be anywhere near my house."
Gus sat there, thinking. Then it came to him. He cleared his throat, and the others seated around the large, round table looked at him. The sounds of the pizza parlor echoed around the large room.
"I have an idea," Gus said. "If you want, why don't you move into my place? We can set up a place for you to sleep."
Bob looked at him, blinking, for a few moments. He then looked down at his plate, then after another moment, he looked up at Gus, smiling.
"Really? You'd do that for me?" Gus heard the emotion in his question, and knew he'd made the right choice.
"Of course! You're my brother. You need a place to stay. We can move some things around, give you some space of your own. You can help out with rent and we all win!"
