My life had been a complete mess recently. I had just finished a huge project at work, one that I had poured countless overtime hours and immense effort into. Once it was completed I found out that my manager had taken all the credit for its success, leaving me without any reward for all the stress I had gone through. On top of that my dating life had been miserable. With all the time I had been spending at work I barely had time to do much at all romantically, and the few times I managed to get a date they had all ended with tragic results.
Needing some rest and a chance to relax I took a few weeks off from work and headed up to the one place in the world I knew I could find some serenity and calm. My grandparents had owned a large amount of land in a wooded and hilly area right next to a national park. The land was utterly beautiful, with a wide variety of nature to enjoy. It had a splendid and well built cabin, and there were numerous trails that showcased the diverse amount of natural wonders in the area. There was even a gorgeous little lake up high near where the hills turned into mountains.
The land had been my grandparents, and when they had passed it had been left to me. It was mostly just mine in name, as the rest of my extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins all were welcome to come and enjoy it freely. I just managed some of the logistics, including keeping schedules of who was wanting to use the property. Right then no one had claimed it, so I blocked off my weeks off so I could get some true peace and quiet to myself to reflect on how my life was going.
The closer I got to the area the happier I felt, and by the time I had reached the cabin I was feeling ten times better than when I had left. I spent my first day there mostly just relaxing and reacquainting myself with the place. It had been a while since I had last spent much time there, so I walked a bit around the cabin, chopped some firewood, and drank a few beers in front of a fire while roasting hot dogs and marshmallows.
On the next day I decided to take a good long hike, to see what had changed since I had last really explored the property. I chose the lake as my destination and packed my backpack with enough supplies that I could make a quick and simple lunch out on the trail. I went at a leisurely pace, not rushing but wanting to enjoy each and every step along the way. It took quite a bit longer than I had expected, but I didn't care a bit. The peace and serenity it brought me to connect with nature was well worth the time.
I had slept in slightly and started late, so it was mid afternoon when I finally got to the lake. It was even more gorgeous than I had remembered. The scenery was so delightful that I spent over an hour walking even more as I just wandered around the lake and enjoyed the sights. Being able to enjoy nature so freely and without any distraction made me feel like a new person by the time I sat down to eat some lunch. Resting on a short dock my cousins and I had built years before one summer I ate through all the food I had brought. I hadn't thought I would go through it all, but I was hungrier than I had expected I would be after hiking so much.
After my late lunch was done I felt too full to consider hiking the long trail back to my cabin right away. Wanting to take a short rest I found one of my absolute most favorite spots of all on the entire property. Right close to the lake was a large tall tree, surrounded by dense bushes. Nestled inside the bushes was a small little grassy open spot right against the tree. I had used this spot to hide away as a child whenever I wanted to be alone, so it felt natural to return there to rest a bit. Sitting with my back against the tree I sighed happily and pulled out a book. It only took a few chapters before I was yawning and my eyelids started to feel heavy. Thinking a short nap might do me good, I let my eyes shut and sleep overtake me.
I must have needed far more rest than I had thought, for when I finally awoke the sun had already fallen behind the western hills. As I blinked my eyes open it took a few moments to figure out why it was so dark, and I sat up in a jolt as I realized I had slept all the way through the afternoon and evening and into the night. Luckily it was a full moon, and it seemed especially bright that night. I shook my head and sighed out, cursing myself silently for having not set an alarm or anything that would have kept me from sleeping for so long. I started to grab my things and searched for a light when I heard a very unexpected sound, voices.
My body tensed up and I sat completely still as I focused on the sounds of someone nearby. Now that I was listening I could hear the sounds of people moving around along with the voices. No one else was supposed to be on this land, as I knew anyone from my family would have asked me before coming here. So who this might be and why they were here I could not even guess. There was a chance that someone visiting the nearby national park could have accidentally ventured onto my property, especially since there weren't many good signs marking the edge of the park and the start of my land, but that didn't help stem the tide of worries that washed over me. I had a tendency to overthink things and my mind often jumped to the worst possible outcome.
As I stayed still and listened I eventually could make out several female voices. They were speaking softly and were moving about, so it was hard to focus too much on any of them. In the middle of bushes where I had sat down I couldn't see anything, as the bushes were quite tall and thick. I tried to calm myself, taking deep breaths and trying to tell myself that these were probably just some hikers or other nature enthusiasts who didn't know they were on someone's property, and that they almost certainly were harmless. Still, the little I could make out from the voices sounded eerily like mystical chanting. This made my nervousness and worries skyrocket.
Slowly I moved from my seated position and creeped through the bushes towards the nearest of the voices, desperately trying to keep my movements quiet and not alert whoever was there. I didn't want to startle these people and cause them to act rashly, and I hoped I might be able to sneak away if I needed to. As I peeked through the foliage I was greeted by a fantastical sight.
In the bright moonlight I saw two women in white robes with drawn up hoods. One was tracing out some sort of design on the ground with a sharpened stick, and the other was laying out some sort of dust on the lines the first had drawn. The dust glowed faintly in the dark, showing off the design fairly clearly. As I studied the pattern they had drawn in the ground I saw they had marked out two large circles. The first and largest went around the tree and bushes where I had napped all the way to the edge of the lake. The second and smaller circle was centered in the middle of the first, and was perhaps ten feet in diameter. Inside the larger circle there had been drawn a huge five-pointed star, though the lines stopped at the outside of the inner circle. There were also numerous smaller geometric designs throughout the inside of the outer circle, though none inside the smaller circle. As I looked around I saw a third figure in white clothes just like the others placing torches at each point of the star.
A creepy tingle worked its way up my spine as I saw more and more of what these people were doing. All while they worked the three chanted softly in language I didn't understand. I was sure that I had come across some sort of pagan cult, and I prayed that these were the type to just do this sort of weird stuff for fun. I desperately hoped that they weren't the type to bring out a goat for some sort of sacrifice, or get their blood from an even more awful source. My habit of always imagining the worst possible scenario for anything was getting me quite spooked by this creepy group.
I was ready to make my escape as quietly and quickly as possible, but I was stopped from rushing away. Once all five torches had been placed they were lit, and one was directly on the other side of the bushes I was in. If I tried to leave that way the bright light of the torch would surely give me away, and I was certain that I didn't want to be spotted. If I wanted to sneak out I was left with the option of trying to sneak out by going deeper into the circles slightly and then make for a gap in the torches, but that seemed extremely risky. The robed figures had finished their drawing, and now were standing at the edge of the inner circle. If I tried to run in any direction I was sure they would notice me. That only left me with the choice to stay still and just wait till these people were done with whatever they were doing, at least if I wanted to remain undetected.
Hunkering down I tried to make myself as concealed as I could. I briefly thought about moving back to the hollow beside the tree, but a strange change worked it's way through my mind. Now that I had convinced myself that the safest option was to stay put, I felt a strong curiosity to watch what these people were doing. No matter what was happening, I wanted to stay where I could see them clearly. All of a sudden it was as if no amount of potential danger could keep me from figuring out more about what this bizarre event was about.
The three figures stood in the middle of the inner circle, and I noticed that the space wasn't completely empty. There was a large blanket laid out that covered a good portion of the area. The figures remained standing, and stopped their chanting. In the dark and with their hoods drawn up there were hardly any details about them separated one from another. After a few moments I was only able to differentiate them by their height, as none were of very similar height.
I noticed the figure of middling height fidgeting nervously, wringing her hands together in front of her. "Um, is this really all necessary? When you guys agreed to help me out with my relationship problems and invited me out here to join your coven I thought we might do yoga and meditate in a meadow or something, maybe light some candles and pray to mother nature, not all this. I get that you guys believe in it all, and I want to have that sort of belief as well, but Tif...." The nervous person asked. Their voice was timid and uncertain. Her questioning was cut off abruptly when the tallest figure raised a hand and turned their hooded head directly at the unsure figure.
