My neighbor seldom went anywhere before her husband died. Now she might venture out for her mail 2 or 3 times a week. I take care of her yard. She asked me to bring her mail in whenever I'm mowing. She gets meals on wheels. Last year, she started getting Senior Home Caregiver assistance 3 times a week.
I met her Caregiver on one of my mowing days. We talked about what her life was like as a caregiver. She had fallen on hard times at age 55 when her husband died. His business was in a financial mess. He'd failed to keep payments up on the life insurance. It didn't pay. The business collapsed.
She had few skills. This was something she could do. It didn't pay well but allowed her to get by.
She told me the number of people she helped varied. Sometimes she would have 3 in one day. Sometimes she would have none. She was bathing my neighbor 3 times a week and doing laundry plus a little housework.
I said I'd like to know more about her work life. Who knows when I'm going to need some help? I'm almost 80 now.
She called me the next day. She had one morning job near me. I invited her in for brunch and a chat. She came; we ate. We walked thru the ground floor so she could say what might be done if she was my caregiver.
