Without a doubt, Tom was nervous. Questions raced uncontrollably through his head: what if Rob's different now? What if I'm boring? What if he doesn't show up? Giving himself one last look in the mirror he sighed, obviously unhappy with what he saw. In a flash, he'd prised open another button on his shirt and rolled up his sleeves. Tom looked down at his watch and gasped, scarcely able to believe how quickly the time had gone. After a final fluff of his spiky black hair, a quick spritz of cologne and a quick pat down to check he had his keys, wallet and phone, he was gone. Before long, he was halfway across town in a classy bar asking the bartender for a drink. As soon as it arrived, he was downing it greedily, begging for the alcohol to kick in and calm his nerves.
Right on cue, Rob walked through the door and Tom felt his heart pound in his chest as they locked eyes on each other. With his trademark shaved head, neat jet-black beard and stylish outfit, Rob oozed a certain kind of confidence as he sauntered over. He flashed Tom a grin and held his arms out wide.
"Bring it in, man. It's been too long," he said, with an unmistakeable Brazilian accent. "You're looking great."
"Thanks Rob, you too," Tom replied as they shared a lingering hug. "It's so good to see you. Can I get you anything? Wait... double Jack and coke right?"
Rob nodded eagerly, "That sounds great, can't believe you remembered!"
Tom laughed, "Oh, it's easy. I just remember that night when you had too many of these and I had to put you in a taxi home before we even got to the club. I'd never seen you so wasted!" Rob roared with laughter while his face betrayed a hint of embarrassment.
They started reminiscing about their college days and after a few drinks, it felt like they'd never been apart.
"Seriously, where does the time go?" Tom said. "You've got to be, what, 33 now?"
"34. Can you believe it? Man, sometimes I just wish I could go back in my early 20s. How much crazy stuff did we get up to?!"
Tom chuckled. "Knowing you, I bet you're still getting up to all kinds of mischief. How's it going with the ladies anyway? Seeing anyone?"
Rob sighed and looked down, "Nah, man. It's been a while, that's for sure."
"Really? I thought they'd be queuing round the block, I mean just look at you." Tom leaned back from the table and scanned Rob's body.
"Thanks, Tom. I forgot how good you are at the whole pep talk thing. Enough about me... how are you going?"
"No action from the ladies but uh... I think I'd better fill you in. The thing is I-". Tom paused and took a breath. "I don't know how to say this, but here goes. I guess I realised last year I've been lying to everyone, including myself." He took another breath and felt his face flushing. "What I'm trying to say is I'm pretty sure I'm bi." Tom gave a quick flash of his hand, showing him a ring glistening with bands of pink, purple and blue. "I've actually been seeing a few guys recently."
"Wow, really?! I mean... I never would've guessed but... good for you, man. Love that for you."
Tom looked relieved, "Thanks for being so cool about it. I was kinda worried about how you'd take it. I think I've actually known for a while but I guess I wanted that experience with guys before I could really believe it."
Rob's eyes narrowed. "Experience?"
Before he could stop himself, Tom blurted out, "I mean it turns out sex with guys is actually pretty hot, you should try it sometime." He laughed and held his hand up to his mouth in shock; he never usually talked about sex so openly, it must've be the wine talking.
Rob laughed along with him for a moment before giving him a look Tom couldn't quite figure out until suddenly, it dawned on him.
"Rob, is that- What was that look for?" Tom asked as he eyed him suspiciously
Rob laughed nervously, "What look? You're seeing things, man. How much have you had to drink?"
Tom lowered his voice. "The look that says you've actually been thinking about it."
Rob was like a deer in the headlights. How did he know?
Tom put a hand on his shoulder, "It's okay, man, you can be honest with me."
Rob turned away and as he looked back, there was an awkward smile on his face, "Alright, fine, you got me. Yeah... I have."
Tom grinned, obviously pleased with himself. "Well that makes me feel a bit better. Seems like I'm not the only one keeping secrets. Is it just thoughts though? I mean... you've never done anything with guys before, right?"
Rob shook his head. "Not really, only a kiss in a bar once when I was drunk I think. That's about it. I guess I have wondered though... what's it like, being with guys? Is it really that different?"
Tom thought about it for a moment. "Yes and no. It's, uh, kind of hard to explain."
He could see the cogs turning in Rob's head and a sudden jitteriness about him.
