Chapter One -- Professor Lawson
PAXTON
Paxton Rhodes shuffled into his dorm room and threw his backpack on the floor before landing face-down in his pillow. He ignored his roommate, Jeff Brown, when he looked up from his laptop. He already had enough trouble to deal with.
"Something wrong, Pax?" Jeff's voice was laced with sarcasm.
"No." He grunted back through the pillow.
"Dude, what's going on?"
Pax rolled over and looked at Jeff. He was his best friend. Best friends for over a year now since they moved into the dorms together last fall. They had survived their Freshman year together and both played on the football team. It helped having someone who was going through the same struggles as you.
Although, he wasn't. Jeff was a brilliant student where Pax barely maintained grades high enough to keep his football scholarship. He knew it was his abilities on the field that kept him around. Most of his teachers went lighter on him since he was one of the star players. Not all of them though.
"I'm failing chemistry." He finally said rolling onto his back and feeling the hard, lumpy mattress beneath him. He would miss this mattress when they kicked him out.
"No way. Oh man. You have to get your grades up. Coach Watson will pull you from the game, or worse." Jeff's voice held all the horror Pax already felt. When he looked over at his roommate his brown puppy dog eyes were wide with shock.
Jeff was a larger build and he was definitely the better looking of the two of them, not that Pax was ugly. Girls just seemed to gravitate toward Jeff and his dark hair, dark features, muscular body and overwhelming charm.
"Ugh, I know." He sighed and threw his arm over his eyes to shield them from the harsh light. Pax knew if he was pulled from the team he would lose his scholarship. "I don't know what I'm going to do man."
"You better figure it out quick. Coach Watson checks everyone's grades before Friday practice and he will pull you from Saturday's game. Pax! You have to play Saturday, this could cost us the playoffs and the championship!"
"You're not helping!" Pax said pulling himself up to the edge of the bed and planting his feet on the floor. "You think I haven't already gone over all of that in my head?"
Jeff pushed his laptop aside and stood up to start pacing the room. It was one of his nervous habits. He would pace the hallway before a big exam, the locker room before a big game, and now their dorm room when they couldn't figure out what to do.
"Have you talked to the teacher? Who is it?"
"Professor Lawson, and no. I just found out when he posted the grades for midterms. I bombed it. Bad."
"Well quit fucking around and go talk to him. Avoiding the problem won't get it solved and Coach Watson will check grades tomorrow, idiot."
Pax lunged tackling Jeff to the floor. He knew it was a fool's attempt to wrestle with Jeff. He had over twenty pounds of solid muscle on him, but that never stopped him from trying.
When Jeff flipped him onto his stomach and landed on him it nearly knocked the breath completely out of Pax. Jeff held him down until he begged for mercy with both of them laughing.
Jeff sat up on his knees and Pax felt both of his hands come down hard on his ass cheeks. It wasn't the first time they had played grab ass -- and a lot more.
Both of his hands moved up to the band of his shorts. He pulled them down exposing Pax's bare ass. "I don't know, man. With what I see in front of me you could solve all your problems with this right here."
"Whoa man." Pax looked over his shoulder.
"You think Professor Lawson might take a walk on the dark side and give you some...extracurricular homework?" Jeff wiggled his dark eyebrows.
"Isn't that a little clichΓ©?"
"Who fucking cares? If it works and you can get a passing grade then all of your problems will be solved." Jeff scooted off as Pax rolled over and pulled his shorts back up. "You let Professor Lawson and Coach Watson into those beefy cheeks and they'll give you whatever you want."
Pax sat up and leaned against his bed looking over at his best friend. "Hmmm, now there's an idea!"

Pax checked his phone again and waited. This had to be done at just the right time. He didn't know Professor Lawson personally or really at all beyond the few chemistry classes he had been to.
Who wants to take chemistry at nine o'clock in the morning? Not him, especially not when he had a full and active social life to maintain. Of course it was his own fault for scheduling the earliest possible class they offered, but he really had no other option. His advisor had told him the class was required, but it was the only time slot left.
Sometimes life just worked against him. He had thought it would be like high school and he'd be able to coast by on his good looks. The golden blond hair and bright blue eyes. Almost constant tan.
He had even flashed Professor Lawson his pearly white smile to no avail. He had tried to get friendly and chummy with him, but that hadn't gotten him anywhere either.
This crazy plan of Jeff's was his last hope.
He checked his phone again. Office hours were almost over. Perfect! He walked into the science and engineering building before climbing to the second floor and got to Professor Lawson's office just as he was about to close the door.
"Professor! Wait!" Pax called out and Jude Lawson turned to see him running down the hall. The older man's shoulder-length curly black hair shook when he saw who it was.
"Office hours are over, Mr. Rhodes. Come back tomorrow."
"No sir, I can't. I need to talk to you now."
"Then you should have been here earlier. Everything is clearly outlined in the course syllabus you received on day one." Professor Lawson locked the door. "Of course you've missed more classes than you've attended so you might not have even gotten that. Were you there day one?"
This wasn't starting out well.
"Yes sir, I was there day one. I would have been here sooner, but I was studying and trying to understand how I could have bombed the midterm. I tried really hard, Professor Lawson." Pax's voice was syrup as he gave that smile he had used all of his life.
"Fine. You have five minutes." He said unlocking the door again and pushing back inside.
The office was small. Barely room for the desk that was in there. The bookshelf behind the desk line the entire wall. Pax cramped himself into the chair and waited for Professor Lawson.
"What seems to be the problem, Mr. Rhodes?"
"I have to get my grade up." He said
"I'm sorry. There is nothing I can do." He shrugged folding his hands together. "Only you can influence where your grade ends up."
"Oh, come on, Professor." He leaned closer to the desk. "If I don't pass this class I can't play. If I don't play then the team will lose the game. They'll take away my scholarship if I don't play."
"It sounds to me like you should have thought about all of this back when you had time to study. Did you consider these consequences when you were skipping classes? I've barely seen you in lecture a handful of times and this is the very first time I've seen you here for office hours. Now you have failed the midterm because you didn't study."
"I did study!"
"Oh really? Can you tell me what a valence electron is?"
Well. He had him there. Pax stared at him only able to blink.
"That's what I thought." Professor Lawson said folding up his notebook and getting ready to leave again. The look on his face was one of absolution. He had only wasted his time. He stood up and started around the desk.
"Professor Lawson, wait! There's got to be something I can do." Pax stood with him blocking the man from leaving.
"Yes. There is a lot you can do. You can start coming to class and studying for your exams, Mr. Rhodes. This isn't high school anymore. You're an adult now."
Pax stepped closer. "If this is an adult problem maybe there is an adult solution." He moved his hand up the man's arm.
The revelation went off in the Professor's dark brown eyes. "You've got to be fucking kidding me!"
Professor Lawson shoved Pax out of the way and exited his own office as quickly as possible leaving him standing there.
The storm was building as Pax made his way out of the building. He wasn't one to accept defeat easily, but as he slunk through the rain he didn't see the way out. He was nearly soaked when he finally made it back to his dorm room.
Jeff was waiting on him. "So, how did it go? I want all the details!" He nearly jumped on him when he walked through the door.
"It didn't work." Pax answered dejectedly.
Jeff grabbed both of his shoulders. "So you're giving up?"
"What choice do I have?"
"I know where he lives."
