It was at school on Monday when Martin realized he had a major problem. Specifically, it was when he saw Tommy in the hall after the first period and felt himself freeze in his tracks when he saw his friend was wearing a pale blue tank top.
It was a hot day, so Tommy wasn't the only one dressing light, and Martin had seen him shirtless plenty of times (and recently with a whole lot less), so why was Martin hearing his heartbeat pounding in his ears when he saw his friend's bare shoulders in the halls at school?
They were walking in opposite directions so Tommy just held up a hand for a high five as he passed. Martin matched his gesture out of instinct and it seemed like Tommy didn't notice anything weird, but for his entire next class Martin thought about the thin hair under Tommy's arms and how he'd looked cumming on his chest the day before.
At lunch he got his bag from his locker and found Tommy at their usual spot on the East stairs holding one of the cafeteria mini-pizzas on a paper plate.
"Hey," said Martin as he approached.
Tommy smiled and said, "Hey."
There was a short beat and then Elizabeth, who was also there with Rebecca, said, "Hello?"
Martin snapped to attention and finally acknowledged his girlfriend with a quick, "Hey, babe!" He sat down beside her and brushed her cheek with a light peck and mentally slapped himself to get a grip.
"Babe? Like the pig?" Elizabeth asked with a smirk and a skeptical eyebrow.
Martin winced and apologized, "Sorry, I'm not sure what's wrong with me today."
"Awe, it's ok. I forgive you. You can be my little piglet." Elizabeth threw an arm around his shoulders and kissed his forehead. It made Martin smile and they were back to somewhat normal.
He stuck to his sandwich after that and added a few words to the conversation when prompted, but mostly he was happy to let Tommy and the girls do the talking. Elizabeth and Rebecca were big readers and theatre nerds, so they were running through all the Shakespeare and Shakespeare-adjacent movies they'd been watching.
Then Rebecca threw out, "Ok, but which one has the hottest lead?"
"Oh I know this one!" Said Tommy, raising his hand like the most eager kid in class. "Romeo and Juliet, Leonardo DiCaprio."
Martin bit his tongue.
"Correct!" Said Rebecca, pulling Tommy's head in for a kiss.
Martin sipped his water.
Elizabeth scoffed, "It's always Leo with you. There are other actors, you know? Actually, do you want to go to a movie after school?"
Rebecca finally pulled her lips off Tommy and said, "Sure!"
Tommy nodded and said, "Yeah."
Martin found his voice and said, "Weren't we going to practice?"
They all looked at him. Tommy raised his eyebrows. Martin tried to keep the blush from his cheeks as he quickly added, "You know, for the SAT?"
"Oh yeah!" Tommy said as if he suddenly remembered. "Yeah, we were going to practice, and study, and stuff."
Elizabeth looked disappointed but she said, "Oh, yeah, we could do that instead."
"No!" Said Martin. He was thinking fast. "I really need to study and, you know, it would be distracting."
"I'm distracting?"
Martin put a hand on her back and smiled and said, "Of course you're distracting, piglet."
"No no," Elizabeth shook her head, "You're piglet." She glanced at the other couple and then gave Martin a quick kiss. "I guess I like that you're responsible enough to study."
"But I'm not!" Said Rebecca.
"Me neither!" Said Elizabeth and the girls high-fived. "So I guess we will go see a movie while you boys nerd out together. I'll try not to get jealous."
She kissed Martin again as the bell rang to send them to their afternoon classes. Tommy winked over her shoulder.
The next few classes dragged out as Martin kept checking the time. The last class of the day was Math, and Tommy had the seat in front of him. He daydreamed through it thinking of what they could practice next. He almost embarrassed himself when the teacher called on him to give an answer, but he managed to pull something out of the air and tried to focus after that until the bell rang.
On the way to their lockers they made small talk about the movie the girls were going to see and how the heat had made Tommy's gym class hell. Martin was glad he didn't have gym this semester since Tommy's three-mile run sounded like it would have killed him, and when they got outside the sun and summer air hit them like a thick bright blanket.
Martin shielded his eyes as he looked in his bag for his sunglasses when he heard Tommy say, "Fuck this."
Tommy slipped his tank top off and used it to wipe the sweat off his forehead. Then he stuffed it in the back of his waistband and threw his backpack over his bare shoulders.
The light, mildly distracting thoughts Martin had been having all day went into overdrive. His heart rate increased and he felt himself sweating from more than just the heat. He fumbled around in his bag, trying to understand why Tommy's body was suddenly throwing him off.
He hid his eyes behind the sunglasses and stood up next to Tommy as he pulled his backpack on and they started walking.
"So, my place or yours?" Tommy asked.
"Is your brother around?"
"No, he's at our dad's place this week."
"And you're mom's working evenings still?"
"Yep," said Tommy with a smile.
"Your place is probably best then."
"Yep, lots of privacy. No one will bother us while we... study for the SAT."
Martin tried not to meet his eye, but he couldn't help it and the stupid mocking look on Tommy's face made him blush. Tommy elbowed him in the side.
"Just messing with you, dude, I'm glad you suggested it. I've been thinking about it all day."
