Stefano convinced himself that Gary wouldn't do anything crazy. His mad outburst was just sexy bravado. The Man had too much to lose, being married with two kids. He would have piped down over night, probably fucked is Missus to blow off some steam, and everything would be back to normal. But a full-on fist fight had already broken out when Stefano got into the depot next day.
He heard raised voices first, and ran to find the two Men circling one another, barking like hounds. Dan had been punched in the eye, and Gary was bleeding from his nose. Seconds later and Stefano's Dad marched right in between the Boxers to push them apart like a Ref in the ring.
Sitting at his desk afterwards, neither of these regular Thugs were going to say a word about how it started.
"Well this very serious! I mean it could be a sackable offence," the Boss concluded.
This set Gary's wits going and he decided to sack himself,
"Keep your fucking job, I quit!" he bellowed, turning to spit at Dan before storming out, "And you can keep the schoolboy, you fucking Nonce! Makes me sick!"
"What does that mean?" Stefano's Pa despaired, "What's that supposed to mean?"
He chased Gary to the door, but the Geordie had made his mind.
All things considered, it was definitely the best move he could have made. He feared Stefano's Sicilian family just as much a Dan, and the last thing he needed was his wife finding out. This way he could just dust his hands of the whole sordid episode and tell his Missus there was a dispute about pay. He'd quit jobs for less. And he'd always have the satisfaction of having stolen Stefano from Dan and fucking him up the arse right under everyone's noses. Win-win.
"Are you going to tell me what that was all about?" Stefano's Pa demanded upon returning to his office, but Dan only obfuscated while nursing a swollen eye,
"It's a personal matter, should never have been brought into the workplace."
"No it shouldn't!"
But being suddenly short staffed, the Boss wasn't about to lay-off anyone else, even if they were a brawling reprobate. He took on Gary's run himself and sent Dan home for a day to fix up, telling him it was a disciplinary suspension.
Stefano stood by and watched this all take place with such suffocating dread. He could hardly believe his luck that none of the truth came out. And he was glad to see Dan go home. It relieved the tension tenfold.
That's where his luck ended however. He couldn't drive, so his own run would have to be postponed a day. Instead his Pa set him to work stock-taking with Phillip. It was the last thing Stefano wanted to do. Counting beans all day with no one but his stupid cousin for company. It was going to be a long day.
With Phil it was just one idiotic question after another,
"Have you got Red Dead Redemption? Why is your phone Android? Do you like Drake?"
