The leaves fall gently in the Fall-time breeze. The sky is a warm shade of pink, as the sun sets behind the horizon. A car cruises up the street stopping in front of a house in the suburbs. The headlights shut off, and the driver's door opens with a creak. A young man steps out, head covered. They make their way up the driveway, leaves crunching underfoot. Light music can be heard outside the home as the figure steps, he passes by the closed blinds of the windows. Walking past a few cheap Halloween decorations, the young man steps up to the front door. Passing under a low hanging party store spiderweb, he reaches a hand up poised to knock. His fingers curl back hesitantly, taking a moment to brush off his outfit and straighten out any wrinkles.

Knock knock knocking sounds out as he pounds the door. A few moments later, footsteps can be heard approaching. The door opens, warm light pouring out onto the dark porch. A figure stands in the doorframe, pale gray skin, ripped clothes, tangled black hair, and a streak of red dripping down their chin.

"June? I hardly recognized you!" It squeals happily. "You made it!" She says inviting him inside.

"Nice costume, Alice." June says, following her inside. The music is much louder now, a mellow yet catchy soundtrack.

"I'm a zombie." Alice says, turning back to him. June is wearing a tight black outfit, with a mask covering all but his eyes.

"And you are...? A cat burglar?" She laughs.

"I-I'm a ninja" He corrects, his covered face blushing.

"Oh wow, you really went all out, huh?" She teases.

The party store didn't have many options. Even fewer that actually fit him. This one was cheap and fit tight around his body. They walk through the hall towards the dining room. Decorations are scattered throughout the house, plastic pumpkins, spiders, and streamers in the shape of "boo!" or "spooky!" trailing around. Rounding the corner, June sees the other invites are all already here. There's a fairy sitting on the sofa with a red plastic cup, her legs thrown over the lap of a wizard with a big fake beard on. A Pirate standing in front of the fridge, staring idly at the contents inside. A younger man wearing a jean jacket sitting at the table full of snacks. He had blonde hair, and green eyes. An athlete's body, with the sleeve rolled up showing off his forearms.

"Everyone, this is June!" Alice says, a hand gesturing to the ninja standing awkwardly in the middle of the room.

"Hey, guys." He says, his hand weakly raised in greeting.

The group all make various sounds of hellos and grunts of acknowledgement. Alice wanders off to the pirate busy plundering the fridge and shoos him off, while June takes a seat next to the young man sitting by the chips.

"Hey, how's the party going?" June asks, pulling out a chair.

"Eh, it's going." He says, pushing aside a bag of chips. "I'm Peter." He says pulling out a crumpled up Spiderman mask from his pocket. June stares at the mask and smirks lightly, pulling off his own. Peter's frame is close to his own. Couldn't be much older either. Running a hand through his hair, June looks around at the other costumed party goers. Peter's eyes study his face for a moment before leaning back in his chair.

"Yeah, not too many people showed I guess. Alice was a bit disappointed." He says. "But I think costume parties just scare some people off."

June nods, crossing his legs. They both turn over to a commotion brewing in the kitchen.

"Get out of the kitchen, I already put out food!" Alice yells, pushing the pirate out into the dining room. He mumbles some half arguments before staggering over to the table, grabbing a bag of chips with more force than necessary. June flinches as the bag gets snatched from in front of him. He looks over to Peter who is smiling with his hand on his head.

"Jesus, Harvey. Calm down, you've had too much to drink already man." He says, clearly finding the image of a drunken pirate crashing the party to be pretty entertaining. Harvey piles chips into his mouth, swaying side to side. His eyepatch dangling around his neck, a mustache that appears to be drawn on with sharpie mostly smeared away at this point.

"Well, it's not my fault this party sucks!" He slurs. "There aren't even any bitches here."

June shifts in his seat uncomfortably. His lips curled into a smile as Peter and himself tried not to laugh.

"What're you giggling about?" Harvey says, jabbing a finger into June's chest. Raising his arms in mock surrender, June smiles and tries to defuse the situation.

"C'mon, I don't even know you." He laughs. The pirate scowls and staggers off to the couch. Plopping down right next to the wizard, sitting part way on him.

"Fuck off, Harvey!" The wizard howls as he attempts to shove him off. The fairy chimes in telling the Pirate off. Only being met with belligerent arguments.

"This is the only good seat in the house, stop hogging it!"

June and Peter watch the show, before Peter stands up and stretches, groaning in a cute way. His shirt creeps up as he does, if only for a moment. June notices, before averting his eyes embarrassedly. June couldn't help but find Peter a bit attractive. How his green eyes peered behind his sandy blonde hair, and how he smiled when they laughed. Shaking off the thoughts, June stood up and walked over to the kitchen.

"Hey Alice, where are the drinks?" He asked.

"Oh, yeah. There's an ice chest under the table by the snacks." She says, her eyes watching the party. Clearly thinking about something else.

"Thanks," June says, making his way to the table. Sliding the chest from under the table, he moves around the ice, grabbing a beverage.

"Want one, Peter?" He says, his head still in the ice box.

Peter's eyes dart over to the drunken Pirate flailing around on the couch, antagonizing the couple.

"Sure, I'll have one." He says, shaking his head.

Popping back up from under the table, with two dripping cans, June sets them between the two of them. They pop them open and smile as they joke about ending up like Harvey if they aren't careful. As they talked, he felt the way his costume hugged his chest tightly, showing his body clearly, showing where he curved and bulged. It wasn't intentional, to get a costume that was so tight. But he wondered if anyone noticed, if Peter noticed. He continued chatting Peter up, who was chill and receptive. June felt like he might actually like him, but became terribly aware of the fact he was clinging to him... Socially at least. As the conversation died down and they sat idly looking at each other, June cleared his throat.

"Is there anything else going on here? Other than drinking and staring, I mean?" He says mustering up his voice.

Peter's face lit up at the prospect, looking around until his eyes met Alice's from across the room.

"Alice! June thinks your party is boring. Have anything more fun we could be doing?" He says. Alice's face scrunches slightly, as though her fears are coming true.

"I didn't say that!" June exclaims flustered, turning to Peter who looks all too proud of himself.

"Well, I don't know. We could play some... Board games?" She says, thinking. The offer sits in the air an uncomfortably long time, before she chimes in again.

"We could play 'spin the bottle' or some shit?"

"That's clichΓ©, Alice." The wizard calls out from the couch, deciding to join the conversation.

"You're only saying that because you and your girlfriend are content to just drink and lounge on my couch all night!" She argues.

"If you have any better ideas then let's hear 'em." Alice adds.

Mixed reactions and half hearted options circle the conversation. Until Alice throws up her hands.

"You guys decide, figure it out. I'm going outside." She grumbles, before storming outside through the back door of the kitchen.

"She seems upset." June says quietly. "Maybe I should go talk to her?"

Peter sips on his drink, then shakes his head.

"She's just stressed. You know how she wants things to be perfect. Best to just let her cool off." Peter says, standing up.

"Want to go look for some board games?" He says looking down at June.

"Sure. Might as well do something." June agrees.

They head down the hallway, the music fading out before kicking up with an intense rock song. Peter walks behind June, as they look for a closet or cabinet. He notices June's legs being squeezed by his outfit, and the way it hugs his ass.

"Jeez, do they make that outfit in men's?" He laughs.

"Wow. C'mon man..." June pouts, feeling more self conscious.

"I'm playing, you look... Comfortable." Peter says, trying to verbally walk it back.

They find a closet in the hall, opening it up and turning on a light. Coats, shoes, and junk fill the closet. June notices a pile of boxes on the top shelf.

"We probably shouldn't be going through Alice's things... But, there are some boxes up there. Let me grab a chair so I can reach-"

"Want me to lift you up?" Peter interjects, grinning.

"Lift me? No I can just grab a-" He yelps as Peter snatches his waist, lifting him a few feet off the ground. His body tenses as Peter laughs. Quickly grabbing a box, he finds his feet touching the ground again. He spins around to face Peter, eyes wide and a fluttering feeling in his chest.

"Don't look at me like that, June. I was just giving you a hand." He says, his voice betraying his enjoyment.

"What's in the box?"

June sets the box down and opens it up. Inside are stacks on stacks of old cassette tapes. He sifts through the cassettes, inspecting the labels.

"I think these are music tapes?" He says showing one to Peter. It has a handwritten label, mostly obscure titles.

"Oh. Well, unless there's a tape player in there too, we're out of luck with this box."

As they look through the cassettes for albums they may recognize despite the custom labeling, June notices the smell of cigarettes.

"What are you doing in here?" Alice says frantically, her clothes smelling of cigarettes.

"Uh, Sorry Alice. We were just seeing if we could find those board games."

"I don't have any board games! Stop going through my shit you-" She stops herself, taking a deep breath and covering her face with her hands.

"Guys... I'm trying to not freak out on you right now. It's not your fault, but this stupid party is stressing me out. Put those back, please. I-" She trails off, the distant sound of clattering causing her to clench her hands and storm down the hall back towards the rest of the party.

The two boys look at eachother like scolded children for a moment, before packing the box back up and putting it back. Elevated voices can be heard from down the hall, Harvey and Alice getting into it. Peter looks over to June, his lips pressed into a frown. He nods signaling they should go check it out.

"You ruined everything, Harvey! I don't even- you can't just- FUCK!" Alice yells, Harvey shouting in retort.

Alice storms to the front door, pulling it open. She turns to Peter then June as they cautiously approach the scene. A vase is shattered, wilted flowers scattered across the carpet. June meets her gaze, she's staring daggers into them. Tears creeping on the edges of her eyes.

"Alice-" June says quietly, unsure of himself.

"I'm taking him home." She croaks.

"I'll go with you, it's late after all." June says.

"I'll come too, Harvey can be a handful." Peter chimes in.

Alice stares at them, her face softening.

"Alright." She says, grabbing her keys.

"Can you two get him to the car?" she says, pulling a box of cigarettes from her pocket, stepping outside. As the door closes in a hurry, June and Peter walk around the shattered glass, trying to avoid stepping on any shards. Harvey sits on the floor, his face red and sweaty.

"C'mon big man. Let's get you home buddy." Peter says parentally, urging him to his feet with an outstretched arm. June turns to the others. The fairy is sitting on the sofa, her knees in her hands. She looks uncomfortable. The Wizard is on his feet and staring at the vase, in a trance.

"Can you guys at least clean this up while we're gone?" June says with a sigh.

"Yeah, sure. I'll take care of it." The Wizard says, snapping back to reality before heading off to the kitchen. Peter has Harvey all the way to the door now, and his helping him stay on his feet. June jogs over to the front door to get it for him. Stepping out into the night air is refreshing, it washes over him like a cool blanket as it kisses his skin. The ninja costume does little to actually insulate him, and the night air quickly becomes more chilly than comfortable as it bites through the thin fabric. He skips past Alice as she stomps out a cigarette butt on the pavement.

Harvey complies all the way to the car, clambering into the back seat. Peter makes sure he gets buckled up and stays back there to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid. June sits in the passenger seat, directly in front of Peter's seat.

The ride there is quiet. Harvey dozing off, head slumped to the side. Peter looks forward watching as the street lights pass by.

June sits hands in his lap, watching his hands as he fiddles with his fingers. He thinks about the party and the way Alice blew up. He looks over, an apology on the tip of his tongue. Alice's hand juts up, a single finger in front of his face, shushing him.

"June, don't." She sighs. Her face gets bathed in red light as the car slows to a halt.

"I'm sorry guys. I didn't mean to yell at everyone tonight. I thought this would be good for me tonight. But I just..." She sits staring into the traffic light, trying to find the words.

The light's hue changes to green, and the car jets off down the empty road.

"It's alright, Alice. We understand." Peter says from behind, his hand grabbing the shoulder of her seat. June nods, watching her expression. She wipes her eye, turning to June.

"It just sucks for you to see me like this, after all this time." She says, a sad smile painted on her face. He turned away. Unable to find the words to say, he felt like this before. Too many times before.

"It's fine. Really, Alice..." June says, trying his best to comfort her.

She nods, frowning. She rubs the steering wheel, taking a deep breath. Her eyes frantically watch the road, looking as if she's waiting for something to jump out at her.

The car falls quiet, other than the hum of the engine and the gasping snores of Harvey. They continue driving. Leaves dance in the breeze, looking like ashes scattered by the night.

June leans back in his seat. Closing his eyes. He feels a light thumping on his seat behind him. He shifts lightly, listening to the rhythmic tapping. Then June feels a hand on his shoulder. His eyes fly open in surprise. He wants to leap from his skin, freezing up. It rubs him lightly, before retreating.

What was that? June asks himself. His mind racing. He feels his face flush slightly as he considers the feelings. Slowly, he lets his hand droop down the side of his seat. Drifting to the back seat. He feels a hesitant hand touch his fingertips. He stretches his fingers out. Reaching into the darkness, he feels Peter's hand grab his softly. His fingers playfully lace between Junes, as they hold hands. June sits looking forward, feeling unsure of what exactly they are doing. But it feels right.

The car pulls into a dark street, slowing to a crawl.

"Okay, Harvey we're home." Alice announces, turning back to the slumbering Pirate. He stirs groggily, taking a look around him.

"Home, Harvey." Peter repeats. Harvey looks at Peter, one eye squinting trying to get a better picture of the young man. His gaze drops lower, seeing him holding hands discreetly with June. His lips curl into a drunken smile.

"Haaha Gayy-" He slurs, as Peter helps him out of the car. Alice joining them on the short walk to the front door. June watches as they walk further and further, their forms blending into the dark of the house. Shortly after the porch light flickers to life. June watches the light, absorbed in his thoughts.

After a few agonizing minutes the pair exit the house, shutting the door and treading across the lawn. Car doors shut and tires squeal as they make a u-turn. Alice lets out a breath of relief, her posture straightening out. Clearly a burden has been lifted.

The car ride back was quiet, but more comfortable.

--

June climbs out of the car, stretching his legs on the sidewalk. He feels the bite of the air again, and trots up to the front door. On hand on the knob, he turns behind. Peter is a few steps away, Alice still standing by the car.

"Go on boys, I'll just be a minute. Get some fresh air." Alice calls out, waving them off.

Inside, they find that the mess has been cleaned up, no traces of the flowers or glass to be seen. The Wizard is now beardless, as he and the Fairy makeout on the couch. June stares for a moment, contemplating announcing their return before they escalate anything. But before he does, Peter taps his shoulder.

"Wanna listen to music with me?" He offers an awkward yet genuine smile on his face.

"Sure." June says. Following him to the kitchen, and out the back door. Outside, the moon glows in the garden. Shining a spotlight on a little corner with a bench. They make their way over to the bench, scooting the pillows aside taking a seat side by side. Peter sits close pulling out a pair of earbuds. He takes it, placing it in June's ear hesitantly. June's heart was aflutter at the gesture. He glances at Peter, watching as he opens his phone, navigating for a moment. June leans back on the bench tilting his head back and exhaling the nerves away. His breath billows up and drifts away in the cold air.

Suddenly, the sound of the music fades in. The volume slowly rises until the 80's rock song is blasting away in his left ear. Peter leans forward slightly, his eyes focused on June.

"Did you want to listen to something in particular? What're you into?" The blonde boy asks. His foot tapping on the pavement in rhythm.

Meeting his gaze, June takes a moment to respond, shaking his head lightly side to side. Before answering trepidatiously.

"I don't mind this, whatever you want to listen to." He responds, his arms tightly crossed in a light shiver.

"It's fucken cold out here, huh?" June adds softly.

Peter's foot stops tapping.

"That's because you're wearing spandex, Dummy." He says looking proud of himself.

Peter thinks for a moment, his knee bouncing lightly. He wonders if he is doing this right. If June is into him, like he's into June. He wouldn't have held his hand earlier if he wasn't. Right? He was never quite sure how to express his wants, when in situations like this. Peter stands up, taking off his jacket slowly. He offers it to June. Peter's expression is soft, trying to send silent messages to June's heart.

June looks somewhat flustered, hesitant to cause Peter to give him his own jacket. But he utters a soft thank you as he grasps the denim, wearing it over his sleek jumpsuit. They sit in the quiet night once more, listening to the next few songs that shuffle.

June sat arms still crossed, the denim doing little to actually stave off the chilly air. But inside, he felt warmth nonetheless. He scoots closer to Peter. Threatening to invade his space. Hoping that he's wanted there.

Wordlessly, Peter moves closer as well. A silent affirmation.

Peter, now side by side with him. Bodies closer than just strangers would allow, he snakes his arm around June's shoulders. Holding him in a gentle embrace.

"Is this okay with you?" He asks softly.

"Yes." June whispers. His voice is no longer unsure.

Then, Peter leaned closer to June. Their hearts beating wildly as he steals a kiss. June feels himself melt into the kiss, closing his eyes. It only lasted moments, but it felt longer. June's eyes flutter open and he smiles sheepishly. Peter is smiling back softly, the moonlight highlighting his hair. He breaks eye contact, his hand stroking June's shoulder affectionately.
