Chapter 4 -- 'Irish' Send-Off
NOTE: This is the last chapter without any sex. I wanted to ensure that the characters were well known and the backgrounds were set before any sexual situations.
I will close with this -- PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not drink or do drugs and get behind the wheel of a car. For all that is good and holy, call a cab, call a friend, don't get behind the wheel. No one should ever go through this grief as the result of something so avoidable."
Cynthia and Jeremiah joined AJ on stage -- both hugged AJ and held him closely.
Cynthia -- "Syd was my little at K and AJ is Jeremiah's little at A. We wanted to thank everyone for being here tonight. It means a lot to the WSU community that we rally behind each other when tragedy strikes. Everyone was asked to bring a candle or light source to raise as AJ sings Syd's favorite hymn -- How Great Though Art. If you know it join in. AJ."
AJ -- "A little heads up would have been great."
Jeremiah -- "Then you would have made an excuse not to be here. This is something you know will help everyone heal and connect to Syd. It was her favorite and she loved to hear you sing."
AJ -- "Okay folks, I guess I will attempt to sing acapella. I beg your forgiveness as there is no way this will be anything but ROUGH and I hope I can make it through. Please join me in singing this for Sydney Marie O'Brien -- mother, wife, sister, daughter and granddaughter. To my family, thank you for your support and I'm so glad you are here. Here goes my love -- "
Tears began to flow, but AJ's voice was clear, loud, and heavenly.
"O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And then proclaim, "My God, how great Thou art!"
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
A short time after AJ began singing, everyone else stopped and raised their light as high as they could reach. Most everyone was in tears when he finished. It was a personal and moving performance. AJ knew the only way he made it through that was because Syd filled his body with warmth, strength, and absolute peace, without it he would have crumbled under the weight of the situation. AJ sang directly to Syd as he released her into God's trusting arms.
AJ looking skyward -- "Walk with me always my beautiful bride, I love you to the moon and back."
His family, fraternity, Syd's sorority, and most of those present called out -- "always and forever."
AJ stepped off the stage, took Conor from Charlene, and walked over to the banks of the Palouse. He took the small family photo from his pocket, kissed it, and tossed it into the river. He hugged the boys tightly to him and said a little prayer asking God to let Syd be their guardian angel and to make sure she was at peace and help him be the best damn father anyone has ever had. He acknowledged he would make mistakes but committed to always putting love and the boys first. He kissed both boys on the forehead again and turned to go.
When he turned his family was in a semicircle around him. He handed the boys to Evelyn and Charlene and said -- "Let's get them home and in bed. Tomorrow is going to be tough as we have to be at the funeral home at 10 AM."
AJ's family began to make their way back to the house, AJ expected the crowd to have dispersed but they were all still there. As the group walked everyone parted to let them pass. AJ's fraternity brothers and Syd's sorority sisters encircled the family to provide a buffer around them allowing the space to be a family. When they got to the exit of the park, they were stopped by the Mayor and Police Chief. A short conversation was had. AJ expected to see Officer Scott Reed with his father but Scott was not in the crowd that night, AJ felt an emptiness that he was not there. AJ thanked the Chief for allowing Scott to take the call, he asked him to express his thanks and gratitude to Scott as he knew in his gut, that he would not have made it through without someone watching over him.
Chief Reed -- "AJ my heart goes out to you. When my wife passed away from cancer it was my faith and my family that allowed me to come through to the other side. Hold on to those closest to you and accept the help others offer. I will make certain Scott gets your thanks. He would have been here tonight but his fiancé Maureen was not feeling well, Scott felt he had to be there."
AJ -- "He's where he should be, I hope she feels better soon. Thank you again for attending, I need to take the two nuggets home for bed. Goodnight, sir." AJ wondered 'Why do I feel like a jealous 14-year-old over him not being here? I need to get my head straight.' AJ didn't realize he chuckled out loud when Trav elbowed him - "What's so funny my friend?"
AJ -- "What?"
Trav -- "You were chuckling and had an odd expression on your face."
AJ -- "I couldn't figure out why I was annoyed with Scott's fiancé..." Trav raised an eyebrow at his best friend and thought to himself -- maybe my straight boi is not as straight as I thought. Food for thought.
Nanny and Evelyn wrapped their arms around AJ from either side and set off for AJ's home. As they approached Ash Street and AJ's house, Cynthia and Jeremiah asked if AJ would join them at The Coug for a beer.
AJ -- "I would love to but I'm not 21 so I can't."
Cynthia and Jeremiah had been very busy putting this together -- "We talked with the Mayor, the Police Chief, and the Owner of "The Coug". It is closed tonight and has been designated a home for the night. The agreement is that our houses have the night to drink and remember if we don't get out of control. Moms, Dads, and Grands you are all welcome as well. We figured the nieces and nephews could watch the boys while we raise a glass to Syd."
Nanny -- "I'll stay and help the younger ones with the boys; you all go raise a glass and I'll make sure the kids are bathed and put down."
Gran -- "I'll help too."
