Underground Love
"Ok, listen up guys. Can I have your full attention please - this is very important."
Everyone crowded around the young man with the silly haircut standing on the bench.
"Jeff, who you booked with, has called in sick today."
There was a collective sigh from the group and some conferring.
"I'm going to take both groups. It will mean we will have to keep close, but I'm sure we'll be absolutely fine. If anyone doesn't want to carry on, they will get a full refund or an alternative date of their choice."
They all watched as an older couple left and walked back to the car park. Callum then went around handing out the safety gear. Everyone was given a helmet with a torch on top, and a pair of old overalls to fit over their normal clothes.
"Anyone nervous about confined spaces?" He asked.
Pete considered putting up a hand, but seeing as everyone else was looking around to see who was a wimp, he kept it firmly by his side.
"Hi there."
Pete looked to his side to see the young woman he'd just parked next to.
"Hey." He said.
"You didn't want to put your hand up then?" She asked.
"Why? There's no problem." He replied a little defensively.
"I saw you sitting in your car, and you looked somewhat apprehensive."
"Thanks, I'll be fine."
He then moved closer to listen to the safety briefing.
The group took their turn to climb into the small cave opening. Pete held back watching everyone disappear underground.
"You don't have to go you know."
Pete looked around and saw the young woman again.
"It's Emma by the way." She said smiling.
"Pete." He paused and looked at the hole in the side of the hill side. "I need to do this." He said his voice shaking slightly.
"Ok, well lets' do it together. To tell you the truth, I'm not exactly sure why I'm here."
He smiled and got a lovely smile in return.
"After you." She said.
They followed the group along a dark and damp network of natural tunnels. After five minutes Callum called them to gather around him. He then gave an abbreviated history of the origins of the caves. As he was coming to the end he asked everyone to switch their head torches off. Pete felt his heartbeat rising as each light went out and it got darker and darker. In the end it was just his light bouncing off the cave walls. Emma grabbed his hand tight and reached up to switch off his light.
Everyone gasped at the sudden and total darkness. You couldn't see your own finger an inch away from your face.
"Ok, everyone - light's back on and follow me." Callum said to the group.
Pete stood there shaking. Emma kept a hold of his hand;
"Stay with me yeah?"
He nodded and followed a pace behind her. As they progressed further and further into the cave complex the headroom got tighter and tighter. Sometimes they had to lie on the floor and shimmy under the low rock to get to the next chamber.
"What the fuck am I doing?" Pete said at a particularly sketchy bit.
"Your doing great Pete. Most of the chaps I went to university with would be crapping themselves by now."
"Thanks."
They both edged their way through the next section. Pete had a bit of a moment that took Emma a few minutes to get him over. Finally they emerged into a garage size space - and no one was there.
"What the fuck?" Pete said squeezing Emma's hand tighter.
"Relax." Emma said, feeling her own heart begin to race. She continued; "Now I'm going to shout for the others Ok?"
Pete nodded.
"HEY! GUYS! HELP!" She shouted at the top of her voice. Rather than echo, her voice seemed to just rebound off of the walls around them.
She tried again and again over the next five minutes. She could feel Pete getting more and more anxious.
"Right, this is what we're going to do." She said calmly. "We'll sit here quietly have a chat and they'll soon come back when they realise they are two people short. Ok?"
"Ok."
They both sat on the damp cold floor and held their knees in their arms. After five minutes they both started getting agitated.
"Right - what music do you like?" Emma said in her most upbeat voice.
"Heavy metal." Pete replied.
"Ah, I don't know much metal. Europe?
Pete just gave her a look.
"I love Rhythm and Blues myself."
"Nice." He said sarcastically.
"What do you think of the new government?"
"I don't discuss politics with strangers."
"Oh, god, you're not far right are you?"
"See, this is why I don't discuss politics. I'm not far right, but if I was, or anything directly opposite your persuasion, whatever that is, we would now be having an argument, in a confined space."
Emma tried unsuccessfully to stifle a laugh.
"This is not funny!" Pete said loudly.
Emma then pissed herself laughing. Pete eventually caved in (pardon the pun) and joined her.
"Right, ok. Not politics then." She said once she'd calmed down. "Where do you like to holiday? Here? Abroad?"
"The Greek Islands." He replied.
"Thank heavens for that." She said excitedly. "How many times have you been, which ones? I've only been to Corfu but I absolutely loved it."
Pete spent the next twenty minutes giving Emma a virtual tour of Greece's larger Islands. It turned out he had relatives on Kos and he would use that every year as a springboard to explore.
After he'd exhausted his repertoire he went very quiet.
"Are they coming back?"
"They will eventually, but when I don't know." She replied as a shiver went down her spine. She then felt him move closer and he put an arm around her shoulders.
"About the only thing I'm useful for is body warmth." He said dejectedly.
"Well, I'm very happy for it." And she snuggled into his chest.
After another quiet ten minutes Pete spoke: "Do you think we should switch these lights off to save power?"
"That is a very good idea. It's not like we need to use them sat on our arses is it?" Emma replied.
They both looked at each other as they clicked their lights off. They sat in total darkness for thirty seconds before Pete spoke;
"Sex."
"Oh, go on then you old romantic." Emma said before laughing out loud.
"No, come on. I'll tell you something, and then you can tell me something."
"Err, ok." Emma replied nervously.
"Right, my first sexual experience." Pete said.
"Go on then."
"It was in the back of my girlfriend's parent's car. They were in the front seats at the time."
"You are shitting me?"
