Summer sets in strong with a heatwave hitting the nation, stewing everyone sitting in their sweat even in the shade. Breezes supercharged with the scorching heat melts everything like dragon's breath, and mirages make the landscape look like a poorly-rendered video game. Although shelter indoors is advised, the summer sunshine is too much to pass up, especially since it's just as hot indoors, if not hotter.
Riding in a car driven by Mia Milosevic, 20, ferried by her are: Carrie Harper, Tracey Garret, and Lillie Pratchet, 19, and Stacey Flynn, 18; all are stuffed into the stuffy heat of the metal box as they are transported to a beach only a couple of hours drive away from the city's outer-limits.
The girls all sport very skimpy swimwear; the barest of bikinis, barely covering them as they opt not to burden themselves any more than they really need to being so hot out. Their exposed skin is smothered in sunscreen, making them all feel sticky, but better than burning into blisters and boils, hoping to bronze into a nice tan.
The atmosphere inside the car as it barrels down the main roads is loud and randy, with Mia concentrating on the road with her girlfriend at her side bopping around, blasting loud dance music out of every open window. On the backseat, Lillie, Tracey, and Stacey are all blasted by the noise from the front speakers, and met by the gusts of air, slightly chilled at their speed of travel.
Arriving at the beach, Mia parks up, and everyone gets out whilst she opens the boot, opening the refrigerated cooler bag filled with bottles of water floating in water that was ice, huffing, "Fuck, that didn't last long. This was supposed to stay cool." She picks up a 2-litre bottle of water from the tepid pool, lukewarm to the touch, knocking some back. It hardly refreshes, but takes the edge off. The other girls rush to grab bottles of their own, sipping something to at least keep them hydrated before it's sapped out as sweat.
Stacey sighs after a sip, "That is completely unsatisfying," looking past the car to the sea beyond the rise of the embankment they're parked on overlooking the beach, overjoyed as she points out, "but that looks so inviting right now."
Lillie follows Stacey to the crest of the bank, unimpressed as she notes, "It's grey. Hardly a tropical paradise."
Carrie joins her friends, chuckling, "At least the sky is blue, with not a cloud in sight," scanning the sands to see scattered groups of people already having fun, "Looks like everyone had the same idea."
Mia and Tracey help each other to haul the cooler bag, and the girls all rush off onto the sands to find a spot to make their own for the day, topping up with sunscreen. With child-like enthusiasm, Carrie kicks the sand around the area, with Stacey chasing her, calling, "Remember doing this when we were little?"
Carrie chuckles, "Yeah, of course."
Lillie stoically stands with a hand to her hip, and her other hand limp by her side, looking bored as she stares off to the horizon, losing herself in the divide where the blue blends into grey. She sits down, hugging her knees, resting her chin on them, attention caught by the chaos in front of her.
Tracey starts towards the sea, calling back to the others, "Let's see what the water is like," running to it. She soon finds her answer. Fucking cool. A little bit cold around her feet as she wades in, but much more warm nearer the surface. Splashing the water up over her face, she feels refreshed, rubbing her eyes immediately as the saltiness stings.
Carrie and Stacey giggle as they splash more water on Tracey, and also on each other, wading and treading water as they go far enough out to swim in the shallows, splashed by the sea as it sends it's waves to them.
Mia asks Lillie, "Not going to join in?"
Stubbornly, Lillie sits without looking at Mia, giving her reply, "This is fine."
Mia makes a suggestion, "We've come all this way. I know you like your own space, but it will feel good to get in there. At least, so you can boil instead of roast?"
Lillie rubs her arms, with her skin feeling so hot to the touch, rolling her eyes, "Fine," rocking herself up to her feet, walking side-by side with Mia to the water's edge. The waves lap over Lillie's toes, washing past her, and she stands watching the others playing just a few metres away.
Carrie comes over to Lillie, cocking her head as she says, "Come on. It's not that bad. Come in?"
Lillie crosses her arms, opening up, "You know what I'm like. I'm just hot, and don't feel like doing anything."
Carrie casts a knowing look at Lillie, "Yeah, I know, but that's why we're here. We're all hot, and bothered, and it's helping us cool down a little. Even just a little. This is better than staying cooped up inside with Dad."
Lillie responds curtly, "With Dad?"
Carrie explains her intent, "I meant, you inside with Dad. Not... never mind..."
Lillie laughs a little, "Sorry... I'm still fucked off..."
Carrie cosies up to her friend's side, cooing, "Maybe, you should come and cool off with me, and you will feel much better? Maybe you would be, like, in a more forgiving mood? Maybe, you might find it fun?"
Lillie can't contain a smile, shaking her head as she gives into a laugh, "I really want to be mad at you. I hate you for making things so hard. Can't I have a little angst?"
Carrie chuckles, "Maybe, you just think I'm cute, or something, like... I don't know," coercing her friend, one step at a time, further into the sea to converge with the others.
The girls frolic and play in the water for a while, completely drenching each other. They head back to the cooler bag for a drink, drying off quite quickly just from the bearing heat of the blazing sun. One by one, the girls pass around a bottle of sunscreen, making sure they're well-protected.
Coming over to the group of girls, a young teen girl announces, "Excuse me! I don't want to be rude and interrupt, but my friend over there wants to come meet you. He wants to get to know one of you better," casting her eye over Tracey as she says so.
Carrie chuckles, "Bring him over. I'm sure we can work something out."
The young teen looks back to signal to her friend to join her, returning to face the group of girls to introduce herself, "I'm Cariad, by the way. Cariad Byrne," and as her friend joins her, she announces him, "and this is Shane Tobin."
Shane, 18, waves, "Hi," looking around at everyone nervously, keeping close to Cariad, 17.
Tracey admires the toned physique on show from the young man, enquiring, "So, which one of us caught your eye, then?"
