It was a cold and windy day when I first saw her. Her auburn hair curled around her face in wavy rings and her skin was as white as porcelain. Her blue sun dress didn't do much to shield her from the cold, and she futilely held it down with one hand as she clutched a stack of books with the other. It was clear that she was new to the North East, and had apparently never encountered the cold before.
I took a moment to admire her as she stood near the car lined street at the outskirts of Georgetown University. She seemed to be making her way haphazardly towards the dorms, but the look in her eyes revealed that she had no idea where she was going. She pressed herself against the metal fence to squeeze by a rather obese police woman who was writing tickets for the long line of illegally parked cars, crushing her books against her perfect breasts as if in an attempt to flatten herself completely. I took a drag from my cigarette and watched her squeak by the cop, mere inches away from the unsightly and rather rotund ass in uniform that was pointed at her. She visibly grimaced at the sight of this all too full moon, and I couldn't help but laugh at her unfortunate position.
After much shuffling and side hopping, she managed to maneuver herself back onto open ground and let out a loud sigh of relief, loosening her arms just enough for her books to break free from her chest and come crashing down to the sidewalk in total disarray. In utter despair she fell to her knees to collect her books, but this was clearly the last straw, and her patience was spent.
On reflex, I ran to help her, choosing to brave the street rather than dry hump the cop, and I came to meet her head on, kneeling in the gutter to collect her books. Her head popped up in surprise and our eyes locked for a fraction of a second. The vision of her beautiful green eyes lasted just long enough to burn itself into my memory, and in them I saw every element of the sea. Something about them penetrated me to the core, laying my entire life bare, and for a moment I could only stare dumbly back at her in complete awe.
Finally, her voice broke the silence and I regained what little composure I had brought with me.
"Oh...thank you. I mean, really, it's fine...you don't have toβ"
I nervously cut her off mid-sentence and simultaneously kicked myself for being so rude.
"No, really, it's no problem. Pretty girls should never go without help."
She smiled with a mixture of relief and tension, and I allowed myself to relax ever so slightly. Something about this girl threw me entirely off balance and I found my brain completely unresponsive. Her voice was clear and feminineβeven slightly childishβbut there was an undercurrent of strength that plainly stated that this girl was no doormat. As we stacked her books, I couldn't help but notice that my position in front of her allowed me a glimpse down the top of her dress, and I would be a liar if I said that I didn't take the liberty of sneaking a peek or two. From what I could see, her breasts were both natural and perfect for her body; enhancing the curves of her waist and hips by providing an equally exquisite balance and curve to her chest. A few stray freckles dotted her shoulders with the appearance of miniature constellations, and delicate silver earrings punctuated by small sapphires dangled from her ears; clearly a graduation gift from some proud family member.
I picked up the stack of books and stepped on the sidewalk to help her up. She stood only a few inches shorter than myself, and I quickly estimated her to be approximately 5'7".
"Thank you..." she recited with a hint of practiced gentility. Her lips parted slightly as she searched for words to follow, but none ever came. I sensed her uneasiness and broke the silence as best I could.
"Do you need help carrying these? I mean, I wouldn't mind. I'm Silas, by the way..."
Her eyes brightened at the friendly offer, but her shy nature clearly held her back from accepting.
"Oh...thank you...I'm River. I think I'll be fine, I just need to figure out where I'm going...you wouldn't happen to know where the undergraduate dorms are, would you?"
I couldn't help but smile knowing that she would be living on campus, and thus, near me. I pointed her South and took one more opportunity to admire her curves as she disappeared around the corner. I turned to head towards the nearest coffee shop and did my best to ignore the disapproving eyes of the police woman.

Later that night I sat in my window watching the web of sidewalks below. My roommate had announced a few days ago that he was moving to Amsterdam to sell hash brownies for the rest of his life, and by the next day he had already packed and disappeared. His replacement was due hours ago, but frankly I didn't care if he showed up at all. My mind kept wandering back to those unforgettable eyes. The very memory of them brought the sound of waves to my ears, and I couldn't help but wonder if I had dreamed the whole thing. I resisted the urge to smoke another cigarette and focused on the memory of the mystery girl in the blue dress, with constellation freckles, and a voice made to melt hearts.
I heard a key click into the lock of the door and I grunted in annoyance. I got up from my spot at the window and started to walk towards the door in preparation of meeting the next academic asshole who had decided to apply to Georgetown for the bragging rights. The latch turned and the door swung open, but to my great surprise there was no douchebag in a polo shirt standing in the hallway. Instead, there stood River, blue dress and all, books still in tow, and clearly shocked to see me standing there in front of her.
A moment of awkward silence passed between us until I finally worked up the nerve to ask the obvious question.
"What in the world are you doing here?"
She blushed horribly and stammered, "I...well...I was in a room...but something happened with the pipes...and it flooded, and...they said this was the only free one...and they said that if you said you didn't mind rooming with a girl for a while...then it would be ok...and it would only be temporary...I mean...I didn't know this was your room...and...well..." she trailed off into mumbles and then stopped talking altogether.
I was too shocked to even form words, but I knew that if I didn't say something, this once in a lifetime opportunity would pass me by and never come back. Also, if that wasn't enough, if I didn't choose her then I really would get some educated ass as a roommate, and that was too much to bear.
"Of course you can stay. I mean, you'll have your own room over there," I gestured towards a closed door to the left, "and it's not like I've never lived with girls before; I have two sisters."
My reassuring smile seemed to give her confidence and she brightened up instantly.
"I really can't thank you enough! I don't even know you, and you've been so nice. I promise I'll try not to bother you too much, I swear." At that, she disappeared into her room and closed the door.
