Wearing a Penguin suit on hot summers day was not my idea of bliss, how could any one contemplate getting married in the middle of summer, when the weather is always going to be scorching. The Principal of Julie's school had finally found someone who was willing to marry a sixty year old, I did not see what the thirty something English teacher saw in him, I wouldn't imagine he had a pot full of cash hidden away, and he has always lived in this small town, oh well each to his own I guess. Julie came down the stairs wearing a gorgeous snug fitting pink dress, the colour contrasting against her tanned skin and long curly blond hair. Seeing Julie dressed up, gives me a tingly sensation, just like when we had first met. We have experienced so much together and seeing Julie walking down the stairs in that dress radiating that youthful innocence she once had brought a great big smile to my face.
Julie smiled back at me I hoped she was feeling the same as I was. "We better be going or we will be late and we don't want to be late do we?" Julie sarcastically remarked. When we arrived at the garden wedding all the locals had turned out in force, weddings were far and few between in these parts and it seemed like they were all going to make the best of it despite the heat.
The ceremony seemed to last for hours and it wasn't till dusk was upon us the Chaplin uttered those magical words, "you may kiss the bride" magical not because of the romantic in me but because all I wanted was a cold beer. The walk from the towns botanic gardens was not far to the reception which was being held in the town hall, the hall was tiny and two marquees had been erected at both ends of the building to accommodate the large amount of guests, the caterers had brought in extra toilets and equipment.
After dinner and all the obligatory speeches had finished I felt a little more relaxed the tables conversation had shifted from it must be great to be a writer working from home, and now that your not writing what do you think you will do for work, I felt like telling these stuffed up people I was going to go back to my qualified job, which was Neuro physics, but I don't think they would have got the joke. The heat of the day had turned into a sultry night and the marquee filled with people wasn't helping the situation, it was becoming unbearable. Julie excused herself, "off to the girlies room are you then," announced one of Julie's male colleagues, Julie smiled and left with out qualifying the comment.
