Author's Note:
This is the story of a man that has a terrible, humiliating thing happen to him. But more importantly, it is the story of what happens afterward and how he comes back from that event. Because of that story structure, the first part of this story is a downer.
If you find this part of the story a bit too harsh, I would encourage you to also try part two before you decide this story isn't for you: things don't stay this bad for Seth through the whole story.
I hope you enjoy!
Part 1: Hate the Sin
Nina Aoki checked herself one last time in the mirror with a critical eye.
She was no expert in what people wore to clubs, but in her opinion, she looked hot. A tiny black dress that showed off her slim form, perfectly styled hair even blacker and shinier than the dress, and immaculate make-up. That had been the hardest part: Nina normally didn't wear makeup. She had had to practice with tutorial videos for hours in the lead-up to tonight, but the hard work had paid off. It looked flawless.
Everything would be perfect for her first ever time going clubbing. Well, almost everything. With a tiny, almost inaudible sigh, Nina headed out to the living room. There he was, sitting on the couch like a bump on a log, still playing the same video game he had been playing two hours ago when Nina had started getting ready.
"How do I look?" asked Nina lightly, striking a flirty pose. She still had hope somewhere in the back of her mind that her boyfriend would change his mind and decide to come with her. Maybe now that he saw how great she looked, it would spur him into action.
"One second, babe," said Seth, his thumbs jamming wildly on the buttons of his controller. "I just need to.... Uhhhhgh." He made a strangled sound of frustration and tossed his controller to the side, his eyes finally sliding over to look at Nina.
To his credit, now that he was fully engaged, Seth's eyes lit up with appreciation. Nina felt a surge of fondness as he visibly brightened, his eyes running over her sexy outfit. "Wow, babe!" he said with a goofy smile, "You look amazing! All this just to go out and dance for a few hours?"
And just like that, his unconsciously dismissive tone made annoyance bubble up inside Nina once again. Seth Takano was a great guy. Kind, warm, and supportive... most of the time at least. But he wasn't super good at taking hints.
"Well, it's important to me," said Nina meaningfully, crossing the room to sit on the couch next to Seth, lacing her fingers through his. "I've never been very good at dancing or comfortable around crowds... and you know how much I want to go to the spring formal this year. I think this will be good practice." The unspoken implication that Seth could also use similar practice as the man who would be escorting her to that dance hung thick in the air. As usual, it went directly over his head.
"I'm proud of you babe!" said Seth with a smile. 'Leaving your comfort zone and learning new skills is hard! I'm rooting for you."
Nina's smile was almost a grimace as she softly said, "You know, you could still come out with me if you changed real quick. I bet it wouldn't take you more than ten minutes to be ready."
Seth looked surprised and a little incredulous. "Uh-uh, sorry babe. I told you the first time you asked. I'm just no good at dancing. Just not my thing, I'm afraid. I would much rather just stay at home and order a pizza. I hope you have fun though."
Nina got up from the couch a little stiffly. "Oh. Ok. Fine. Well... I guess I'll see you later then," she said quietly, turning away. Seth was... well, to be frank, he was a bit of a nerd. Video games would always be more interesting to him than parties and dancing. And, to be fair, Nina was a nerd as well. They had met in anime club for God's sake, so she couldn't judge him for being a little geeky. But sometimes it was painfully obvious to Nina that she was Seth's first-ever girlfriend. He really needed to learn how to think about others.
"Have fun babe!" said Seth cheerfully, reaching for his controller once again, "Love you!"
Nina took a deep breath and balled her fists. She should really just say what she was thinking, be straightforward with Seth, and tell him that she wanted him to come to the club with her even if it made him uncomfortable. But instead, she let her hand go limp and said "Love you too, baby," as she headed out the door. If Seth's weakness was his oblivious thoughtlessness, hers was being too meek. She had always had trouble speaking up and asking for what she wanted.
That was another reason Nina was trying out something new tonight. She hoped that by breaking out of her comfort zone with crowds, she could also inspire herself to be more assertive. In high school, Nina never went to her own prom. She was too much of a wallflower for any of the guys to notice and ask her, and she would have been too embarrassed to go alone. That was why the spring formal was so important to her.
The issues were all connected in her mind: becoming the type of person who went out to clubs, being more assertive...
And being more forceful and upfront with her boyfriend about her needs.
