Intoxication Part 2

Emily put the chocolate fudge brownies in the oven before setting the timer. She then double checked that she had ice cream in the freezer and a bottle of wine chilling in the refrigerator. Friday girl's night had become a regular tradition with her roommate Allison, but tonight she feared it may not be all that fun.
All week Allison had been talking about a big meeting at work that could make or break the start up that employed her. Although her roommate was brilliant, Emily noticed that ever since she had started this job, her confidence had been shattered.
Back when the girls had met as roommates their freshman year in college, Emily had been blown away by her friend's academic prowess. Allison crushed her classes graduating on the Dean's list with high honors. However, it wasn't just academic success that defined Allison. In her spare time the college student volunteered at multiple charities, even spending two of her Spring Breaks on mercy missions to third world countries. Emily looked up to her roommate and credited her friend for making her a better person.
While not as professionally driven, Emily had buckled down and become a teacher. After meeting Allison, she realized that she wanted to give back to society and found teaching to be the ideal profession. It also gave her a nice balance in life so that she could focus on her other passions which included music and painting.
The two women remained roommates throughout college and after graduation with both of them landing jobs in the same city. It was only because of Allison that Emily was able to afford their apartment. She had agreed to pay 70% of the rent in order to have the larger bedroom. However, it went beyond that. Allison often took the time to cook, did most of the cleaning and even sometimes did Emily's laundry despite working longer hours. Emily had begun to think her roommate was superhuman.
However, all of this paled in comparison to the fact that Allison had introduced Emily to her current boyfriend, Mike. After dating for only a couple of months the two had fallen in love and were spending most of their time together at his place. While this meant the two roommates were seeing less of each other, Emily had made sure to maintain Friday Girl's night. However, beyond their weekly ritual, the two roommates mostly communicated over text.
That was why Emily wanted to make today special for her friend. It was her turn to be supportive of Allison who would likely be very down after her meeting. She had baked her friend's favorite brownies, stocked up on ice cream and chilled some wine to cheer her up. She also had lined up multiple girly movies to help her friend unwind.
It wasn't like Emily to assume that Allison would fail, but after everything she had heard from her friend, it sort of seemed inevitable. That being said on the off chance her friend had a good day she also had some sparkling wine chilling in the fridge. Everything else she had planned worked regardless of the meeting's outcome.
The opening of the apartment door caught Emily a bit off guard. It was only 4:30 in the afternoon. Typically her roommate didn't get home until after 6:00. This was definitely not a good sign.
"Allie is that you," she called out.
There was silence for a second before Allison appeared in the kitchen. To Emily's surprise she was smiling broadly. Either things had gone well today or her roommate was having a nervous breakdown.
"You're home early." Emily attempted to break the ice as her roommate had not yet spoken. "Is everything alright?"
Allison waited for a few more seconds, letting the tension build, before she decided to speak, "Oh my god, I crushed it. I really crushed it. Emily, I did it."
