No-one every told me it would be such a slippery slope. No one ever said that it could happen so easily. But within a short few months, I discovered a source of pleasure I never thought I'd ever feel. I wish I could sum it up easily, but it wouldn't do it justice to the experience. And to be honest, I don't think I'd go back and change anything at the start of that new year.
I thought we were having the time of our lives already! My wife, Amanda and I finally took the leap and bought a home close to the school where she had been teaching for the last four years. We met about three years prior, when she was still fresh as an educator. I still remember the way she looked and what she wore when she walked into my training.
I was just an educational tech trainer at the time for the school district. Teachers would come in and get the lay of the computer systems from me before they started in their jobs. In that time, I finally got a chance to work up to a Technology Specialist role where I get to be responsible for an individual school's technology department.
And yes, you guessed it, I landed the job at Amanda's school... sparking the whole search and relief of finding a house nearby. She had already briefed me of the tech woes they had there, but from what I could gather, it wasn't bad at all. I was looking forward to getting to know people beyond just the handful of trainings that I would see them.
"C'mon we don't want to be late for your first day!" Mandy beamed at me while I fiddled with the key to the front door.
"We're literally an 8 minute walk away." I hustled up behind her and handed her breakfast shake.
"You're going to love it here." Mandy smiled.
I held my own reservations on that. I had been rusty in working on relationships beyond just the scope of trainings. I've never been good at small talk. Frankly, I was afraid I would fall into the stereotype of being the IT nerd that was always awkward. Amanda did her best to give me an idea of the administration, but I could hardly keep the names straight.
We parted ways at her classroom, careful not to do the whole PDA thing and be professional. Her whole grade group was already in the room. I caught a quick glance and saw that there were two older teachers and two younger teachers. They all taught 3rd grade. Amanda confided in me that she was excited to get the newer teachers in so that she wouldn't be referred to as the "eager beaver" anymore. I think part of her was just glad to be not part of the old or new guard.
When I got to my office, I tried the key and found the door wouldn't budge. Just when I was thinking the first day was going great. I ended going to the front office and the secretary tells me that they had re-keyed some of the doors over the summer. I had picked up my set earlier when I learned I had the job at the end of the last academic year.
"You'll have to go to the Custodian's office..." The secretary looked over her shoulder at the school floor plan and back at me, "You know where that is right?" She pointed at it on the map and said nasally, "It's right here."
I felt like I was in a maze even thought I had been to the school before this morning. It wasn't hard to miss the Custodian's office doors, they just looked slate blue and industrial. I knocked on the one already ajar.
"Come on in!" A booming voice called out.
I walked in and found this hulking figure behind desk casually scrolling on the computer in front of him. "Uh, I was told to come here to get some help with my keys?" I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little uneasy.
"Aw Yeah!" He stood up, tall. I had to guess at least 6'2'' (later I'd find I wasn't far off, 6'4'') because I was only 5'7''. And the hulking was an understatement. He bounded over fast and held his arm out to me, muscles holding his sports shirt hostage in the sleeves. "Name's Rodrick. New Head Custodian."
"Oh okay. Uh, I'm Peter. Grant." I shook his hand, barely getting some fingers across his large palm. "Uh I'm the new Technology Specialist."
"Aw alright, I see you fellow newbie. We gonna have to stick together." Rodrick patted my shoulder as he passed me, jingling the keys on his belt. "Let's get you in that office." He took off and then waited for me to lead the way.
I truly didn't know what to say. The awkward silences were coming true as we walked along the hallway. I pointed at the door to my office and he stepped forward. I don't think I'd ever see a man this big before. In the time it took me to look up at him, he already turned and unlocked the door!
"There you go Pete." Rodrick smiled a gap-tooth grin.
"Oh thanks." I hobbled in from under his shadow, flicking on the light and putting my bag on the desk. I heard his footsteps behind me.
"Yep." Rodrick looked over the office. "Only thing you missing is a hot coffee."
"That does sound like it would it the spot right now." I nodded.
"Well I usually got a pot going first thing when I get here. You very welcome to bring something to fill up." He smiled.
"Wow, I appreciate that Rodrick." I smiled in earnest. Now I was feeling welcome.
"No problem man." He turned to the door. "Aye, and just call me Roddy. I'll give you a call when I got the keys ready for you to pick up. If you ain't hear from me by 10, just come by."
In the time I waited, I got most of my office unpacked. I had the long task of setting of the computer lab, but most of the curriculum around that wouldn't start until a few weeks. But my work was cut out for me when I had to manually push updates to staff computers so that they could receive auto updates from the cloud.
Roddy hadn't called so I figured I would start with his computer and take a mug with me for the coffee. The Custodian's office was on the way to the cafeteria and I just ended catching the migration of students getting to breakfast. When I turned the corner, I saw Roddy standing right outside his door, giving low-fives to the students and grinning. The teachers herded them along and I gave some low-fives too.
"Man this is a great gig." Roddy looked on as the last of the classes moved away from us.
"Definitely." I added.
"That was second grade right?" Roddy asked. "Man I can't even keep em' straight."
"Oh I think it was third grade." I corrected him. I recognized one of the teachers in Amanda's group.
"Oh alright." Roddy squinted. "Mmhmm, I'm gonna have to put some names to faces. Sounds like you know some?"
"Just a few. I think that last class was Ms. Harris's class." I followed him into his office and held out my mug.
"Ms. Harris huh?" Roddy looked deep in thought as he filled up me on coffee. "She must be new."
"She is..." I cocked my head in surprise, "How'd you figure?"
"C'mon man." Roddy looked at me incredulously and lowered his voice. "Pretty young thing like that? Bet she just graduated last year." He handed me my keys.
"Yeah you're probably right." I said, getting ready to launch into a whole explanation about how the school was largely seen as a starter school for teachers before they got cushier jobs. But before I could, Roddy stood up and strode over to the door, waving me over.
