Chapter Six: When the Air Doesn't Lie
Evette barely looked at Eddie during their shift. She hadn't texted him all day. No check-in. Nothing. When she clocked out that evening, Eddie was already waiting in the parking lot, leaning against her car like everything was fine. She didn't speak. Just unlocked the door. He opened the passenger side and slid in, silent. She asked him if he wanted to make a run with her, telling him that they'd come back for his truck. They drove off into the coming night with only the soft hum of road noise between them, no music. Just tension. It wasn't until they turned off the main highway, down the winding two-lane that led into Brittany's neighborhood, that Eddie finally sensed something was up and spoke.
"Where are we going?" Eddie asked.
Evette's eyes didn't leave the road. "You'll see."
Brittany's House -- Dusk
The sun dipped low behind the trees when Brittany opened the door. She wore black leggings and a loose off-shoulder sweatshirt, her hair tied up with a scarf, bare feet on hardwood. She froze when she saw both of them.
Evette didn't wait for an invite. "We need to talk. All three of us."
Brittany stepped aside. Inside, the house smelled faintly of lavender and something warm, rosemary maybe. Eddie looked uncomfortable. Brittany looked terrified. Evette walked to the center of the living room and turned to face them both.
"I know," she said. "I know what happened. And I'm not going to scream, and I'm not going to play dumb."
Eddie started to speak. Evette held up a hand.
As she lifted one finger Yvette demanded, "I want to say something first."
They both waited. Evette looked between them--two people she knew in entirely different ways. Two people who had now crossed the same invisible line.
Evette resumed "I think part of me always knew something could happen between you two. The way Brittany looked at you. The way she used to look at me."
Brittany's eyes widened.
Evette continued, softer now. "Eddie, you're my husband. But before you, Brittany and I had... something. One night. After that godawful shift on ortho. It wasn't planned. We were tired. We drank. We laughed too hard. And then it just... happened."
Brittany whispered, "I thought we agreed not to tell anyone."
"We did and I honestly wasn't going to say a word, until our conversation this morning," Evette said.
She looked at both of them, her voice calm but trembling.
"I haven't stopped thinking about that night. Not because I regret it. But because it felt like something opened up in me. Something I never got to understand."
Brittany stepped forward. "So why are you here?"
Evette looked at Eddie pleading "I want to see it. You two. I want to know the truth--not just with words. I want to feel it. I want to decide what this means with you. Not against you."
Eddie looked torn, almost crying as he called her name "Evette!"
"I'm not asking for details," Evette said. "I'm asking for honesty. Show me what happened."
Brittany looked from Evette to Eddie, her jaw tight.
"This doesn't feel right," Brittany murmured.
Evette's voice dropped, almost a whisper. "Please. I need to see it. And I need you both to trust that I'm not here to hurt anyone. I'm here because I love you both in different ways--and maybe the lines don't have to be straight."
