Danielle - Seconds before Midnight, Jan 1, 2025

"Five! Four!" The crowd of fifty chanted as they watched the show unfolding on the kitchen island.

I can't do this!

Danielle thought, but it was too late to back out. In the fifteen years since the core of the group had all turned eighteen, the tradition had only been missed twice. Fifteen years ago was Danielle's first year in college. By a quirk of the school district requirements and being born on the last day to qualify for kindergarten as young as possible, Danielle was the youngest in her class. All her other friends had been eighteen for months. Erin had been eighteen for nearly a year before Danielle turned. Her birthday was just over the other side of the line.

Fifteen years ago, Erin and Damien started the tradition that Danielle was taking part in now. They'd had their names drawn a couple of times since and readily been the stars at midnight. Almost everyone in her core of high school friends had taken a turn.

Other than Maria, who came out as bisexual a couple of months after her turn, the participants ended up marrying their partner for the night. Maria married Mei a little over a year after her performance. Teddy, Maria's partner for the night, found Kaitlyn a few months later.

Danielle's eyes pivoted to Cody below her. He was a good-looking guy with a toned body, but the man was a bit standoffish before tonight. She didn't know if it was social anxiety or he was a fellow introvert, but she couldn't hold a conversation with him for anything in years past. That had changed tonight.

The pair had been closer in high school, but Danielle hadn't thought of him as a potential partner on account of his immaturity back then. Still, the man had hopped up on the island with a smile to take part in their tradition to bring luck in the new year. Even without the drawing, things were heading in the direction of them getting together tonight. Danielle had wanted to kiss him at midnight, but the drawing had other plans.

Erin was absolutely convinced that it was a good omen to be selected and had to persuade Danielle to come to the New Year's party this year. Danielle had been months away from marrying Zach, but he decided he didn't like monogamy. She didn't feel much like celebrating, even if it had been half a year since the betrayal. Erin, though, could convince her to go on all sorts of adventures.

"Three! Two!" each yelled number was followed by a clap.

Danielle's legs burned from getting into position so long before midnight. Her tall heels hadn't helped things, but she loved the look. They paired so well with her choice of stockings for the evening.

Darn my hubris!

She looked into Cody's brilliant blue eyes and got a subtle nod and a wicked smile.

He is cute.

Danielle should have known it was past time for her name to have been drawn.

I wonder if Erin put her thumb on the scale.

Danielle thought, but Erin wasn't that devious.

Is she?

"One!" the crowd shouted, and it was time for Danielle's part in tonight's fun. She let gravity do all the work.

"OH! Happy New Year!" Danielle only needed to yell out, 'Happy New Year,' but she couldn't help the other outburst. Cody felt too good as his naked cock filled her pussy in one smooth motion. Danielle would prefer to take little nibbles to envelop more and more of a big cock with each repetition, but that wasn't the tradition.

New York may have had the famous ball drop, but Danielle's group of friends thought their dropping of the pussy was a better way to ring in the new year. Like many traditions, it didn't start out with pomp. It was a result of Erin's older sister providing champagne to the party of eighteen and nineteen-year-olds a decade and a half ago. An impromptu game of truth or dare got raunchier as the night went along, and Erin was dared to have sex with Damien.

By sheer coincidence, Erin was atop Damien as the countdown began, and she waited until the clock struck midnight to couple for the first time with her future husband. Deanna and Jordan were so keen on the idea that they repeated it to ring in 2011. The following New Year's, Erin came up with a system that involved drawing a guy's and a gal's name from a hat.

Also, by a quirk of the system, Erin, Damien, Deanna, and Jordan, being young and impetuous for the first two years, brought with them another part of the tradition that seemed to gather new pieces like a snowball. They'd gone condom free for sex to celebrate the changing of the calendar. It didn't matter in year three as the names drawn were a monogamous couple, but better sense took over by the fourth rendition.

Before your name was dropped in the hat, you had to have a recent STI screening and, if you were a woman, proof of birth control. No surprise babies or infections from the proceedings. The second was flexible, while the first wasn't. The group was convinced that Erin and Damien's second child was conceived at the 2022 celebration. The timeframe worked out too perfectly.

"Mmm..." Danielle sighed. Cody was stretching her in a new way. He was big but not massive. His tall, formerly lanky, now toned form belied the impressive girth of his cock. Danielle had been with longer, but never thicker or with a pleasant, subtle, upward curve.

All my friends can see my pussy split by Cody's cock.

Danielle thought.

Yes, but most of them have taken a turn up here, and it never seems to stop them.

She reminded herself. A couple of times after the countdown, the couple had snuck off to have sex out of the view of the gathered party, but those weren't anyone's favorite memories.

You're having sex in front of everyone, have fun!

Danielle leaned up and put her hands atop her head, showing off as she picked up speed. She watched her breasts shake on each circuit in the reflection of the glass on the double ovens. It fascinated her that dozens of people were watching the show, but Dani didn't want to look anyone in the eyes, save for Cody's magnificent blue irises. His hands were lightly gripping her hips, keeping her balanced as she bucked with abandon.

Cody had covered himself in lube as preparation for their big moment, but that added lubrication was entirely superfluous. Danielle had never been as turned on as she was at that moment, her nectar dripped down Cody's shaft.

When Danielle needed to slow things down after a few minutes, she leaned down, her chest against Cody's chiseled pecs. She could feel his booming heart and quickened breath in a manner that made her giddy. Cody clasped her cheeks and leaned up to meet her lips. Amidst one of the most intimate acts a pair of humans could share, a kiss was on another level, and Danielle was thrilled to be sharing it with Cody.

Cody - A few weeks before New Years

"You're coming, Cody!" Maria announced as she walked into his office.

"I'll have to call you back, Steve, looks like my noon appointment got here early." Cody glared at Maria.

"Alright," Steve chuckled on the other side of the line. He was Cody's most senior direct report but only came into the office a couple of times a month. Though rarely at the office, the man was very aware of Maria, Cody's best friend. "Think I squeezed everything I can out of you for now."

"If you get stuck, ping me, and we can do some pair programming." Cody liked his supervisory role but still enjoyed getting his hands dirty with code. "Still on track for a mid-February release?"

"A Valentine's Day release for this new system? I'm good, but that seems risky." Steve feigned distress. He knew that Cody wanted it ready to roll out, not rolled out in the middle of February. There would still be a few weeks of additional tests before Cody cleared it and began the rollout. Valentine's Day was the client's busiest sales day of the year. Taking the system down for even a few minutes would be a significant loss of income.

"It always is, but that's why they pay us the big bucks." Cody chuckled.

"They pay you? I thought we just loved to solve problems." Steve joked. Their employer compensated them well. "It'll be done."

"It'll be nice to turn something maintainable over to the clients." Cody preferred to turn over projects to internal IT and programmers instead of signing on for eternal maintenance. Everything had to be well documented, and his firm was always available if the client got stuck, but if he wanted to take on more business, he couldn't maintain everything.

"Think you'll be happy with this when the crew gets done."

"I know I will, and Merry Christmas if I don't hear from you before then."

"And Happy Hanukkah to you, boss," Steve replied before hanging up. It was an inside joke between them from the time they were interns and shared a cube. Steve had menorah decorations over his portion of the cube, and Cody had a little Christmas tree, but their boss always got confused about who was who despite having opposite physiques and dissimilar names.

"That could have been the client, Maria!" Cody shook his head and took a seat in his ergonomic chair. He tried to stand in meetings to keep them short when possible.

"Oops." Maria blushed for a moment, then turned and shut the door. "You know Bradley wouldn't have let me in if it was a meeting with a client." She invoked Cody's stellar assistant's name.

Maria was tall and elegant, and her Venezuelan heritage was evident in her jet-black hair and eternally tan skin. She grabbed the back of the leather chair across from Cody's desk, subtly showing off Mei's excellent choice of wedding rings. Her petite wife was as many inches below average as she was above. Love looked good on Cody's best friend.

"True. There's a reason I'm sending him and his husband skiing as a Christmas gift." Cody smiled. He wouldn't be anywhere close to as successful without Bradley's help. The man took care of scheduling and organization, a pair of Cody's weaknesses, and let Cody use his strengths.

"Oh, no wonder he was smiling when I came in."

"Think I did good? He's really the only one that I can't use my assistant to help me with."

"Yeah, Bradley and Adam haven't been skiing since they got married. Perfect dose of fun to let them get their mind off the wait for the adoption decision." Maria nodded and took a seat across from the broad glass desktop. There wouldn't be a decision until after the holidays, and that was too long to sit at home and worry.

"What brings you in? I was going to see you at Mei's Christmas party tonight anyway."

"I heard you weren't going to New Year's." Maria gave him a scathing glare.

"Taking a year off." Cody shrugged. He'd broken up with Cheryl in May and bet that the woman would be there. He couldn't be there if her name was the one pulled from the hat, though he wasn't sure if it would be more painful if his name was pulled along with hers or not. Sex had been good with Cheryl, but that relationship was long perished.

"No! You're one of the ten!" Maria protested and slammed her fist against the desk. She was a true believer in the rash of good fortune that came from their yearly ritual.

"There were eleven of us..." Cody murmured and winced. Not only was he bringing up a painful memory, but he was also helping make Maria's point.

"See! One of two years that the whole core wasn't there! The ritual wasn't completed." Maria's excitement drained as she shook her head, and a tear welled in her eye.

The crew had thought that college graduation was a suitable delimiter to stop their raunchy New Year's celebration capper. The group of high school friends hadn't drifted apart during their mostly four years in college. Instead, they added clusters of college friends to the group, swelling the numbers so that the celebration now regularly broke fifty friends and partners.

They thought that the party would take on a more sophisticated flair, eschewing both the stroke of midnight sex and the ritual they used to greet the dawn. David also elected to stay home from the party that night. In early April, a group text shared a sad link to a news story. David had been killed by a drunk driver. Maria and Erin were utterly convinced that the missing ritual played a role in the misfortune.

The following New Year's party, Erin's name was drawn, and she proudly completed the ritual in front of the larger group. Erin and Maria's belief was further reinforced at the 2020 New Year's celebration. Erin was on bed rest during the last couple of weeks of her first pregnancy and hadn't been present to spearhead the ritual. The dawn celebration was carried out, but not sex at midnight.

At first, the group thought that 2020 was going to be a decent year. Their local pro football team won the championship for the first time in half a century. Then came the virus and the lockdown. The 2021 celebration had to be smaller and socially distant, but the ritual was carried out by pre-drawn names and a web camera.

"Superstition." Cody lamented.

"With strong anecdotal evidence. I can't exactly concoct a precise experiment to prove the impact of our rituals." Maria shrugged. She would know, Maria was a researcher for a biotechnology company and regularly assessed experimental procedures at labs across the nation.

"What are you doing away from work other than haranguing me into going to a party?"

"Going to take Mei to lunch. Things are slow at work until the new year, and I put in the hours all year long." Maria defended. "So, are you going to go? Or do I need to pull out the big guns?"

Cody sighed and leaned back in his chair. "Not if Cheryl's going to be there."

"She's not." Maria leaned in with a smile that faded. "Your ex moved back to Massachusetts two months ago, and you were the last link to the party for her anyway."

"Oh..." Cody knew he'd lose the argument and that Maria would convince him to go to the party as soon as she mentioned it, but he never wanted to surrender easily. "Kinda want to see what your big guns are. Is it Mei?"

"My wife is always the key item to my arsenal." Maria grinned. Even after six years together, talking about Mei rarely failed to make Maria smile and glow. "So, do I need to bring her by on our way to lunch to convince you?"

"What if... what if my name is drawn and either you or Mei are drawn as well?" Cody still wasn't going to wave the white flag. He knew the woman would throw their names into the hat even if they didn't have to because they were in a relationship.

For couples in committed relationships, you had three options: 1. You could abstain from the ritual. One of the side effects of the ritual seemed to be a successful relationship, and the group didn't need to hog that. 2. You could add your partner's name below yours, and if your name was drawn, you could complete the ritual together. 3. Enter your name as usual, which was Mei and Maria's approach.

The second option wasn't possible for Mei and Maria as the ritual took a man and a woman to complete. Neither woman had yet had their name drawn since they started dating, but it didn't scare them in the least, or if it did, they could hide it well.

"Then you'll get to have sex with me or my wife again." Maria smiled. "Well, really, you'd get to have sex with both of us. If I get a little strange, so does Mei!" She giggled with a blush. "No threesome this time, though. Think that would be against the tradition."

Maria and Mei had once used Cody to finally take a chance on their feelings. The women had been flirting with and attracted to each other, but neither wanted to admit that they were bisexual. One night, involving too much good bourbon, Maria suggested a threesome. Cody played his part, but any kisses he got were perfunctory, while Mei and Maria's were scintillating. Both ladies confessed to using him as an icebreaker the following day and apologized profusely.

Cody wouldn't complain, though. The sex was incredible. Both the ladies seemed to be trying to show off to each other with their riding techniques, and Cody was the beneficiary of their playful competitiveness. He had no doubt that either lady would want to show off at the party. Cody shifted in his chair as his anatomy got excited at the thought.

"I suppose it's not like everyone hasn't seen me naked." Cody sighed.

"Might be nicer without the shrinkage." Maria giggled.

The guys in the group complained about the way they greeted the dawn of the first day of a new year. They took a polar bear plunge into the lake that abutted Erin's family home. The water was freezing, even if it was merely an in-and-out affair. Being done in the nude did the guys no favors as their anatomy shrank in the cold water, at least temporarily.

"Yeah, do at least get to see some nice boobies to stave off hypothermia."

"Always a plus." Maria's eyebrows bounced. "So, you going?"

"Fuck, I guess I am." Cody shook his head with a chuckle.

"Good! Go get tested! I made you an appointment and checked with Bradley. You have time now." Maria's grin broadened. "Just sent you the details."

"Awfully presumptuous of you, Maria." Cody shook his head as his phone dinged.

"Can't help it if I'm that kind of good." Maria stood. "Didn't even have to break out the second weapon in my arsenal." She turned to walk away.

"What's that?" Cody grabbed his jacket and threw it on.

"Who I'm going to see now. Don't tell me you're not still into my favorite florist." Maria looked over her shoulder and winked. "She's single, you know."

"I didn't. Think she still sees me as the immature idiot from high school." Cody tried not to look depressed by it. He was no longer the guy who got his heart stuck on a single woman, and Danielle had made it clear that she didn't see him as anything more than a somewhat distant friend.

"You've grown a little since then. Matured a little, too." Maria smirked.

Danielle - A few minutes later, Ombre Petal Flower Shop Prime

"One second!" Danielle called from the back room as she was finishing up a bridal bouquet. The ding from the front door alerted her to a potential customer coming into the shop. Her crew was delivering poinsettias and garland for a corporate Christmas party, so Danielle ran her flagship store herself.

"Hey, Dani!" Erin waved to her with a toothy smile. Her best friend usually had at least one of her adorable munchkins with her, but she was alone today.

Erin had a thicker build but rocked it with absolute, enviable confidence. Her dirty blonde hair was peeking out of a wooly, warm cap to guard against the chilly Midwest winter. The brisk December winds decorated her cheeks with a sublime amount of color.

"Oh, it's just you!" Danielle sighed, then laughed at her dismissive wording. "Not that it isn't nice to see you, but I can put the flourish on this bouquet." She stepped back around the front desk, knowing that Erin would follow her into the back so Danielle could show her the latest creation of which she was proud.

"Nice to see you, too, Danielle." Erin chuckled. "Good to know where I rank."

"Highly, I'm just comfortable with you in the shop." Danielle picked up a pair of tiny shears and clipped a few leaves from the bottom of the blue, purple, and magenta bouquet.

"Oh, wow! That's amazing, Dani!" Erin clapped her hands as she looked closely at the bouquet before Danielle put it into the chiller. She needed it in optimal shape when her customer walked down the aisle this evening. Erin knew to look but never touch the creations, at least not the unusual bouquets like this.

"Thanks, I keep thinking I'm going to run out of new ideas sometime." Danielle beamed. She'd worked hard to make her flower shop empire. It wasn't an easy thing to do when most ordered their floral arrangements from the internet or from a national grocery chain that dabbled in it. Danielle couldn't touch their prices, but she could provide better service and artistic flair that they couldn't.
