Chapter 3
The next evening Ben ventures back down to his computer room, with a vague hope that there might be something more than his friends and his games to look forward to. The whole day had been so dull, school is just so unbelievably boring now, he just wants it to be over and done with so he can get on with the rest of his life. He knows his parents mean well and that have the best intentions, but he just wishes they'd back off.
He settles down into his chair and switches everything on. He looks through the window and there are no signs of life in the bedroom. He saw the husband leave early this morning with a suitcase, so he figured his neighbour must be alone this evening. He could hear electric screwdrivers and hammering earlier but it's quiet now.
She's probably downstairs watching TV. He wondered if she was wearing that sexy nightdress again, do women wear those sorts of things when they are alone?
He's disturbed by a light tap on the door, and his mum walks in. "Ben, you couldn't help the lady next door with a few things could you? She's got some furniture to build and she's struggling on her own and she wanted to know if you could help. She said she'd pay you? A chance to earn a bit of drinking money?". His mum is always volunteering his services to the neighbours. He just wanted to chill out for the evening, but she's right, he could do with the money and the old lady next door usually pays him well.
He says, "Well I was just about to join a game but I guess I could spare an hour or so". His mum steps back out of the summer house and then he sees her, he had no idea his mum meant Sarah! And she'd come down to the summer house too! He reddens a little and then mumbles, "Yeah, sorry, of course I'll help, no need to pay me though, it's fine". Sarah looks embarrassed and says, "I really appreciate it, I've been trying all afternoon to do it on my own but I'm afraid it's a two man job". Ben gets up from his seat and says, "Ok then, let's go and have a look at what we need to do".
He hopes the furniture isn't too complicated because he has no idea what he's doing and really doesn't want to look like an idiot... Especially in front of Sarah.
As they walk back to her house, Sarah says, "I really don't mind paying you, like your mum said, some beer money?", Ben replies, "Honestly, I'm happy if you bring me a beer when we're done, how's that?". Sarah giggles and says, "ok, not a problem. We always have beer in the fridge, you don't need to worry about that".
There are a few half built structures laying about the house. Most of them look pretty straightforward and he can see what she means about it being a two man job. Holding up a whole side of a wardrobe whilst trying to screw in the fittings isn't easy on your own, even for him. At first they are a little awkward around each other trying not to get in each other's way, but as Sarah brings the drinks up they relax. Between the two of them they crack on nicely, laughing as they go, the conversation flowing naturally.
