The protestor's letter bomb blew up with a bang like a firecracker. Nobody was injured in the discharge but a cloud of white powder billowed out and covered Maya as she worked the mechanical letter opener. She shrieked with shock and fear. Other girls then started screaming until their supervisor, Mrs. Shaffer, took charge and shepherded them out.
"Not you, Maya. It could be toxic or something. Stay here until help arrives."
Blaring alarms added to the confusion and the terrified Maya watched through the window as office workers assembled at the far end of the parking lot. Soon she heard sirens swooping in as emergency services arrived and a policeman set up crime scene tape. She watched as a fireman pulled on an orange hazmat suit before entering the building.
His voice was muffled as he entered the post room. "We'll need to get you decontaminated urgently. Follow me, please."
He led her down the corridor, through the fire escape and into the lot. She saw all her colleagues staring at her as another fireman brought over what looked like a fire extinguisher.
"Take off your clothes please, ma'am," the fireman said.
Maya was stunned. "Shouldn't there be a tent or something?"
"Not enough time, ma'am. Not if it's anthrax or plague. We'll need to wash it off immediately for your safety and everyone else's."
That frightened Maya and her fingers fumbled with her jacket buttons as she kicked off her shoes.
"Your blouse and skirt too, ma'am."
"Hurry up," Mrs. Shaffer called. "We've got important work to finish."
Maya's fingers clumsily pulled off her blouse and unzippered her skirt letting them fall onto the blacktop. Her hands covered her boobs and mound.
"Underwear, too. Don't want any residue anywhere contaminating your skin."
"No way!"
"If you refuse, we'll arrest you for knowingly endangering public health," a watching policeman added.
