We live in a big colonial style house on a nice lot with trees near a lake. We were all partners in so very many ways, partners in love, partners in raising our children. Partners in business, that is what brought us here forty five minutes north of the airport.

And his band mates Jerry, Bob, Phil, Keith, Bill, Donna Jean and Robert played Europe in April and May of nineteen seventy-two. We have the album. We traveled to many of the same cities, even saw some of the venues. But we missed the Dead's concert tour by twenty years.

The Business

Boxes filled with every imaginable item come from every imaginable place to Newark International Airport. From the airports of Greensboro, Oakland, Indianapolis, Miami, Dallas among... others. Even Kyoto by way of Anchorage... We fly them to Cologne where they are put on smaller planes and those very fast European trains.

Flying

Leaving from EWR in Newark at three am, we walk out of CGN, Cologne, at five pm local. Our plane leaves Germany in five hours. We won't be on it, we'll take the one tomorrow. We have twenty seven hours in Europe every four days and fifteen hours logged time.

The DC-8-71

Child of the sixties born in Santa Monica, home of muscle beach and an amusement park on a pier. Three hundred-fifty thousand pounds, mostly aluminum... Flughafen

There is a plan to build a station at the airport, but for now we catch a bus to the S-bahn, the local train. If we're out late we can take a cab. But we are out at five pm and back at eight pm tomorrow. The bus works fine.

Cologne

Köln is the fourth biggest city in Germany. Next to the Hauptbahnhof, it's medieval Dom, Cathedral, is the largest Gothic structure in Germany. Built in one-hundred sixty-five years between twelve forty-eight and eighteen eighty, today the stonemasons are working on new cherubs for its upcoming seven hundred and fiftieth anniversary.

The sign said that a quarter-million people board and disembark trains here every day. I wonder if we get counted twice switching trains. Once in a compartment we snuggled together and drifted off to sleep. Well legally this is crew rest, it's actually very comfortable to sleep on the train.

Amsterdam

It's just under three hours by train from Cologne; we are in the red-light district by nine. Napping on the train I wasn't even awakened for a cursory look at my blue passport at the border. Americans don't bother the Dutch officials, German's do. Of course we didn't flatten Rotterdam.
