Chapter 4 - Confrontation at a Mexican restaurant.
I switched to a later judo session to accommodate football practice so I had a few hours to spare. So after I left Stephanie, I headed over to Baja Sonora.
Baja Sonora was a Mexican restaurant owned by some white entrepreneurs. Their business was failing until they decided to hire an all Mexican staff in order to make their food more authentic. After that, they became popular. The kids from school loved going there because they had a lot of seating and they served free fried tortillas and salsa. The owners didn't mind so much because they didn't interfere with their lunch or dinner rush and most of the kids did at least buy a soda.
As I entered the restaurant, and there was a line of students waiting to order. The restaurant had a little seating near the cash register but there was a bigger dining area on the other side of a dividing wall that had two open doorways to pass through. I popped my head through the first doorway and investigated the other side. I saw about twenty cheerleaders gathered around many tables pulled together as if it were a long convention table. There were some other various students gathered around the perimeter areas near the walls and near the tortilla chip heat lamp/salsa station.
Simone was at the "head" of the table and was engaging in conversation with all her friends. I was about to retract back to the other side so that I could get in line when Simone noticed me, and her face lit up and she waved me over.
"Hey girls," I blushed.
I never thought I would get flustered over girls, much less have to be social with a brood of viscous, condescending, gossipy women. After talking to them though, they seemed friendly and I saw no condescension in any of their interactions with non-cheerleaders not in their clique. I realized that I had some fucked-up prejudices that needed to be corrected. One thing I wasn't wrong about, they were very gossipy, however none of them were mean. Rather, they seemed to want to help others. It was against everything I ever learned about cheerleaders from TV and books. I was glad I was open minded enough to accept that.
"So, Mike, where did you learn CPR?" Amanda asked out of the blue, (Amanda was Simone's best friend and second in charge).
"It's a long story. It would probably bore you."
"Ah come on Mike, we wouldn't ask if we weren't interested," Amanda prodded.
"Fine, you asked for it... I used to have a stepfather a few years ago that was a little paranoid. He thought I needed to prepare for the zombie apocalypse or something. He had me learn to shoot guns, put me in all sorts of martial arts classes and sent me to a survivalist training camp a couple of summers ago."
"Ohhh, you're THAT Mike, aren't you? The one that was almost murdered by that crazy guy - you were like famous or something, right?" a not too bright sounding cheerleader name Georgina interjected.
"Yeah... that crazy guy was my step-father."
"Sorry," she quickly apologized.
"No, no, that's ok. It was a long time ago. Besides, he's in jail now. Anyway, it wasn't all bad I guess because, as crazy as the survivalist training was, I did get certified in CPR which ended up 'saving' someone's life," I said making air quotes when I said the word "saving".
"Very true, and we're glad you knew what you were doing. Gail is my sister, after all," Amanda added. "I love my sister and you saved her life. I owe you one."
She seemed to tear up a bit and turned her head to dab her eyes with a napkin.
"Well, I totally understand that. I love my sisters too, and there is nothing I wouldn't do for them. I'm glad you didn't lose her and I'm glad I was there to help."
One of the girls jumped in with, "What WERE you doing there anyway?"
"Ha, ha, you wouldn't believe me if I told you... after all, me perving over you gals makes more sense. But the truth is that I have a bunch of free periods at the end of school and it was a nice day and I wanted a quiet place to read. I didn't know you were going to have tryouts."
"You were checking us out though, weren't you..." one of them chided.
"Guilty as charged. Yes, I am a red-blooded male and you were very distracting."
"So, Mike..." Simone spoke up. "What's your opinion on who did the best."
"Well, I am probably biased, but my sister Stephanie... At the same time, I was very surprised by Isabella's performance. She blew me away. She looked almost supernatural; man, could she move."
"Isn't she really fat?!" one of them blurted.
So much for my, no condemnation from this group theory.
"Hey, she might be 'overweight', but she's STRONG. Imagine having her at the bottom of one of our pyramids or having her catch you after you have been tossed twenty feet in the air..." Simone said, cleverly.
And the girl thought about it and you could see a light go off in her head and her whole attitude took a 180.
"Yeah, you're right. We really could use her..." she went on about how she was dropped a few times in the past and almost got really hurt. I stopped listening and found myself staring at Simone in wonder. SHE was the reason that they weren't mean. She was a good leader. Her goodness more than rubbed off on them. She led not only by example but through intelligence and rationale and her whole group gladly followed.
