Chapter 4: London-Town
"Something unappeased, unappeasable, is within me."
-Friedrich Nietzsche, 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra'
Surprisingly, the bus ride to London wasn't as bad as Hal had feared it would be. The first hour was pretty rough while he grappled with his guilt over the blowjob Brianna gad given him over the weekend. Eventually, he realized that he wasn't feeling guilty over the blowjob, but rather he felt bad that the news would hurt Ally when she found out. Hal cared about Ally, but in his head he knew that their relationship would never survive another year without contact, even if he came clean about his magical powers.
Once he had worked through all of that, it helped. He began to think of himself as a single man again, and it was oddly freeing. Still, he knew that he shouldn't mess around again until he had a chance to talk things through with Ally, otherwise he would be disrespecting her. He didn't think that would be too hard to manage since he only had one night in a strange city before flying home. At least, he didn't think it would be too hard until he met
her...

Hal was standing in the middle of a crowded London sidewalk, head buried in his phone. He knew he was in a compromising situation, and normally wouldn't have been so unaware of his surroundings, but he was lost. Hal was trying to ignore the literally
thousands
of notifications that were bricking his phone to try and get his hotel entered into the GPS app.
The notifications had started trickling in when he re-entered 4G cell service, about an hour into his bus ride. As the connection grew stronger, the notifications had turned into a flood so bad that he had had to mute his phone to keep it from playing non-stop alert tones. He simply hadn't felt like even starting to look at the multitudes of Facebook, Snapchat, email, and other notifications that were vying for his attention, so he had just shoved his phone into his pocket and rode on.
Now, his phone was running on the last dregs of its battery and all the notifications and downloads it wanted to perform had obviously taken a toll on the poor phones RAM. If he could only get to the damn hotel, he could charge it and clear enough of the notices so that it became useable again. Hal had just resorted to repeatedly jabbing at the unresponsive screen when he heard a small voice from behind him.
"Umm, excuse me?" it said. Hal turned curiously to find the source to be a woman of about 5'3", naturally blonde hair, and hazel eyes. She had on a baggy University of South Carolina tee shirt that completely hid whatever shorts she might have been wearing but did little to conceal her large bust.
Hal couldn't help smiling as he said, "Can I help you?"
She gave a little giggle as she replied, "Actually, I was thinking that
you're
the one that looks in need of a bit of help. You look lost."
Hal adopted an indignant expression. "I am most certainly
not
lost. I'm in exactly the right place to be discovered by a gorgeous young woman. The fact that I have no idea how to get to my hotel is irrelevant at the moment."
The woman flashed him a brilliant smile. "Well lucky for you, you were picked up by a gorgeous young woman who can help find your lost hotel! I'm Jen," she said, sticking out her hand.
"Hal," he replied, grasping her cool hand in return. I'm staying the night at Hotel Silva; do you know it?"
Jen finished the handshake by tugging him down the street to get him walking and kept his hand as they walked. "Woow," she said, "this really is your lucky day; I'm staying there myself. It's only a few blocks from here."
"So," she began, swinging along merrily, "what brings a yank like you to London? Vacation?"
"Look who's talking, you're less English than I am!" Hal shot back.
"Says the man looking like a lost puppy in downtown London?" She arched an eyebrow at him.
Hal couldn't help but laugh and give a little ground. "Okay, okay, fair point. But no, I'm actually on my way back home to the States after studying in Wales this past year. I just got in off the bus and my flight isn't until tomorrow so I'm staying the night."
Jen immediately started gushing. "OOooh that's really cool! I go to college in the States but I'm taking a few summer classes at the University of Nottingham. I thought I'd spend a few days sightseeing here in London before I started."
"That's awesome," Hal admitted, "I wish I had time for some sightseeing. Maybe I ought to plan for a few days when I come back in the fall. How long have you been here so far?"
"This is my third day here. I leave for Nottingham on Wednesday." She replied "Well, here we are!" They were standing outside a stylish looking hotel...right across from the subway station he had wandered out of earlier.
"Ugh I walked right past this place earlier, thanks a million!" Hal said. He adjusted his duffel bag and looked for the nearest crosswalk.
Jen caught his arm as he turned down the sidewalk. "Hey," she started, then quieted as she looked nervous.
"Yeah?" Hal asked.
Jen seemed to recover quickly. "I was wondering, do you wanna grab a bite to eat tonight? I'm having a blast but sometimes it's nice to have a real conversation you know?"
