The awakening with Captain Hodkins painfully loud and shearing voice came more subtly the next morning:
"First training session will start in ten minutes, get ready recruits!"
Sleeping in my underwear was the preferable alternative to sleeping in my uncomfortably tight uniform nonetheless of my very public sleeping arrangements, so I slip half naked from my top bunk, and lean down to open the drawer beneath the bed, as my bunkmate was sluggishly removing himself from his sleeping position.
"Now that's a sight I like to see!"
A familiar voice said from right behind me.
I turn sharply to see Dan strutting toward me, already fully dressed in his uniform, his eyes set on my ass against my underwear.
I give him a sharp look that snapped:
My bunkmate is right here!
But when I turned to my bunkmate, he simply gave Dan and I a questioning glare before dressing himself, and walking towards the exit of the barracks.
I look back to Dan who now leans against my top bunk.
He was smiling goofily at me.
"So- what, are we an item now?"
He said cheerfully.
I began pulling on my suit.
"What?"
I snap at him, glaring around to see if anyone was watching us.
"Yeah- since that little makeout session we had, naked. Oh yeah, and that little thing I was about to do before we got rudely interrupted, that I would still like to finish."
Saying this, he gave the bulge of my junk a little nudge with his hand.
I pull away from him and give him a sharp look.
He read my expression.
"What's the problem, Alex?"
He said lightly, giving me a skeptical perk of the eyebrow that I couldn't help but think was cute.
"You- with how you're talking about us and what we did so... openly- and loudly. Edan and those friends of his saw us."
He gave a shrug, that made me run my hands through my hair in order to soothe the agitation building up in my head.
"So?"
He replied, simply.
"Those kinds of sexual relations are completely accepted and a lot more common among Therians."
I stop running my hands through my hair and look back to him.
"What- really?"
He nodded, and stood up straight from where he leaned on my top bunk.
"With Therian's elevated hormones and instincts, men are sexually attractive to the common percentage of men among Therians than humans."
I was taken aback.
Suddenly Dan pulled himself from the conversation and acknowledged that there were hardly any Therians left getting ready for the day.
"Shit- Alex we need to get going."
And together, we jog out of the barracks.
. . .
Our morning training session had been weight training that had came and went quickly. Sal joined Dan and I in our weight training, and I acquainted her to Dan and they seamlessly warmed up to one another.
When Dan was separated from Sal and I to commute to his firearms lesson, Sal and I practiced on our own with my Therian abilities while the rest of the class worked with more advanced training.
In my second attempt to bring out my bull form, I once again sprouted the dark brown fur on my forearm, successfully covering my entire forearm but reaching no further than that before I exhausted myself with concentration and the hair sunk back into the flesh.
Once Sal and I's firearms training came about, Sal and I hunched over the table, watching as the instructor demonstrated the process of cleaning the basic assigned rifles: taking them apart and putting them back together.
From several tables away, I heard the familiar call of a hoarse voice, hushed over the speaker's instruction.
I turn to see Edan, the slim black haired man I now knew as Reece and their other companion, a tall dark skinned with short black hair: Jace.
"Did ya' have any fun during your shower this morning, twat?"
I don't give them the pleasure of a reaction, and turn my head from them, and resume my attention to the rifle before Sal and I.
Sal was eyeing me suspiciously.
"'Fun in the shower'?"
She echoed them, questioningly.
I simply shushed her.
By the time our training sessions had finally ended, five o'clock had arrived, and all of the Therian recruits were rushing eagerly towards the dining hall.
Dan, Sal and I found our own isolated table in the large dining hall, and dig in to our food.
"So, what do you do after your training?"
I ask my friends, taking a bite into my hot turkey sandwich.
"I spend my day with my mother. She lives in the complex. Most people avoid my mother and I, so we mostly rely on each other for company. She works for a clothing store in the headquarters."
Sal says, toying with a grape in her mouth.
I give a questioning look at Sal, but Dan quickly intervenes with his own sharp look that read:
I think you might not want to ask.
Finally Dan replies:
"I don't really have any family. When my mom and dad died, all I could do was head towards the nearest complex and join the Therian army since I'm twenty. I mostly explore the headquarters or hang out with some recruits or other Therians."
Suddenly the hulking figure of Edan, followed quickly by Reece and Jace walk passed our table.
Dan must have caught me eyeing them in silent annoyance, because he says:
"Don't like the big guy, huh?"
I nod, and take a swig of my water.
"What is with him and those friends of his, they seem to always be together."
Sal chuckled into her water cup.
"Yeah, they're practically brothers, the three of them. All of their parents are high ranking officers. I grew up with them practically."
She said with a tinge of disgust on the tone of her voice.
"I wish I could wipe that smirk off of Edan's face."
I grumble, scooping a grape blindly into my mouth.
I caught Dan giving me a look.
"What?"
I say bluntly.
He puts down his sandwich.
"Let's do some more training after dinner every night, training focused more on sparring other Therians. Let's make a Therian soldier of you."
I wipe my mouth with a napkin, swallowing my food.
"Are you serious? How do you know so much about hand to hand combat?"
At that question, Dan almost seemed to freeze before he spoke, almost as if he could not find the words to speak, before saying:
"My father taught me a lot about it. Thought that as a Therian, it would come into good use if I came across an opponent stronger than I am."
I nod, excitement rising once again in my stomach.
"Let's do it. Thank you, Dan."
At that, Dan offers me a smile, and we busy ourselves once again with our food.
. . .
Once dinner was finished, and the Therians dispersed to their evening routines, Dan and I headed through the hallways, and entered a completely abandoned training courtyard.
Dan huffed, looking over obstacle course and weight lifting equipment.
"Thought as much, this place rarely gets late night trainers."
He said, as he pointed to the corner of the courtyard, where several yards of mats were placed against the metal flooring.
We briskly flaunt over to the mats, and take positions in front of one another.
"Alright,"
He said, giving his arms and shoulders a brief stretch, collecting his thoughts of what he was about to say.
"First thing about fighting an opponent that is bigger than you: you have to use your size comparison to you advantage."
He flaunts his arms in an arcing motion at me.
"Example: look at you, a beast compared to me. Use the speed and agility of your smaller size to your advantage. Bigger guys like Edan will have a harder time keeping up with your stamina and quick movements."
I nodded, taking in all of his words, watching his eyes arm hand motions as he expresses his lesson before me.
"Second thing: Go for weak points on his body: throat, nose, eyes, the groin. Yes, its dirty fighting, but when there is too much of a size comparison, you have no choice. You have to use their body mechanics to your advantage, and use momentum and movements with the intent of pinning the enemy with body mechanics to your advantage. They will win in a test of pure muscle."
He stepped a little backwards. Gesturing his arms in a wide arc, beckoning me with a flick of his hands.
"Now, try it on me. First spar."
I lean forward, preparing to attack.
We meet eyes, the light blue glint shining at me.
I charge at him.
To my surprise, he doesn't move. I barrell at him and go for his legs, with the intent of getting him off of his feet, and off balance.
He grapels out of my charge with ease, immediately taking my wrist in his grasp quickly and pressing his other hand into my shoulder, locking my arm into place. Already I was pinned.
I grunted in frustration, and sweat began to bead down my scalp.
"Body mechanics, Alex. Don't blatantly charge at me."
He said calmly, keeping my on my knees, bending my arm further at any sense of my struggling, sending a jolt of pain into my shoulder and arm.
Body mechanics. I'm not pinned to the ground, I can get out of this.
I summer-sault out of his arm pin, and with his hand still grasping my wrist, I take my leg and forcibly knock his feet out from under him.
He hits the mat hard, but quickly reacts to my incoming attack. He rolls away from my lunge to get on top of him and pin him.
While on the ground, he lunges and grapples my head into a lock.
"Got you."
He breaths.
I slam my knuckles into the muscle of his forearm, and his grip slackens just enough for me to kick out and knock him off his feet.
