The next week went by quickly for Roger and Emma. He returned to work with meetings and staff evaluations to complete, but he had a hard time focusing on his duties. His mind wandered each day with only thoughts of her. Emma went back to campus for her classes and had the same problem. They only felt whole again when they were together.
Throughout the week Roger kept asking if Emma wanted to do something together during his two weeks of leave. At first, she was unsure because of her classes, but on Friday she let herself into his house with the key he had entrusted to her and waited for Roger to arrive. She had grown more comfortable being in his house while he wasn't home, all at his insistence, so she decided to have a good meal waiting for him. Unfortunately, there was little time to make something spectacular, so she ordered out.
The table was set and she was filling the wine glasses when she heard the door open. "Lucy, I'm home!" she heard Roger say in a poor Ricky Ricardo impersonation.
"Dinner is on the table," she called back.
He smiled, enjoying the semblance of domestic life that they had shared off and on during the week. "It smells great. Did you make it?" He looked at the table. "Is that--"
"Seared scallops with brown butter and lemon sauce, roasted broccoli with bleu cheese, yeast rolls, and of course, a nice salad."
"This must have taken you ages to make," he said as he leaned in to kiss her on the cheek. "You amaze me."
"I didn't make it," she said. "I didn't have time, but I wanted something special for you when you got home, so I ordered out."
"Well, then you made an amazing choice." He went to the sink and washed up. "Do you need help with anything before we eat?"
"Nope. It's ready when you are."
Sitting, they dug into the meal in front of them, both enjoying it immensely. "Wow," she said. "I agree. This was an amazing choice."
He smiled. "So, did you want something special just because? Or did something special happen?"
"Your vacation starts today," she said. "I know that we hadn't really decided on anything, and you were leaving it up to me. So, today, I decided."
"Oh? What's the plan, then?"
"Pack your luggage," she said as she popped a scallop into her mouth. "I'm taking you home."
It took a moment for him to realize what she meant. He didn't need luggage to visit her townhome. "Montana," he said.
"I hope that's okay?"
"I'm assuming you'll be with me the whole time," he replied, "so there's no place I'd rather be. And it means something, you know? It's another step forward in our relationship, getting to see where you grew up, what you did for fun."
"I just wish Mom and Dad were still there so you could meet them."
"I would have liked that," Roger replied earnestly. "They may not have been too thrilled about me, though."
"Because of the age difference?" she asked. "Dad, yeah, maybe, but Mom? I think she would have been happy that I found my person. If you were fifty?" She chuckled. "Oh yeah, Mom would have freaked."
"When do we leave?"
"I thought you'd want to sleep before a flight, but we could leave tonight if you want." She folded a leg under her as she sat.
"How does that work? Were they flexible flight tickets or something?"
She almost looked guilty when she answered him. "Private jet."
He dropped his fork and quickly picked it back up again. "I, uh, guess I need to get used to the whole 'dating a girl with money' thing." He looked up at her. "I'm sorry. I don't really know how to process that sort of thing. It's just very foreign to me."
"It's all I've known," she said with a shrug, "but despite all of the things I had growing up, Mom did her best to make sure that I didn't turn out to be some sort of self-centered, diva narcissist."
He raised a glass. "Then here's to your mother for doing an amazing job."
"So, leave tonight or in the morning?"
"Tomorrow," he said as he finished his food. "Because tonight, there's a gorgeous woman that I have strong, lustful desires for."
"Oh yeah?" she asked, the beginnings of a smile starting to appear.
"Oh yeah," he replied. "She has a body that would put Aphrodite to shame, is smarter than Da Vinci and Aristotle combined, and has me wrapped around her tiny, sensual fingers."
