Volume Two
Chapter One
Lugma was looking through the microscope. That sperm sample that they gave her was supposed to have other aims, but she had been able to keep a little bit from it so she could do some more investigations and tests. She had the feeling that she could find something new after all these years.
In fact, she had found that the spermatozoon were much bigger than they were in other sperm samples, but this wasn't worth all the effort she had made with the project she was in. She had to found something, and she knew it would be soon.
Grabbing a drop of the stabilized sample, she put it in a microscope slide.
"C'mon, little babies, show me something I want to see..." she whispered to the sample.
She grabbed one of the ovule samples next to her and put it mixed with the sperm onto the microscope slide, ready to add the activation enzyme. Before she could do anything else, though, her eyes went wide.
"What the..." she said, "Are they... attacking the ovule?"
The spermatozoon were all going to the ovule, though they shouldn't as it had not been activated yet, but they weren't trying to enter on it. They were working all together to kill it.
Astonished as she was, she hit the table which made one of the funnels to fall aside, hitting the Bunsen burner which ended with the flame pointing to the sperm samples on the test-tube rack.
"Shit! No, no, no, no, please, please, please..." she said, while trying to grab the Bunsen burner and put it aside. But the last two test-tubes with samples had already burned.
"Oh... no... please... c'mon... I can't bel..." she stopped the sentence all of a sudden. She looked at the samples' content spread on the table, where they should be now burned and clearly unusable. However, they did not had any sign of damage.
She put closer to her eyes her big glasses so she could look at it better, and grabbed a microscope slider and a dropper to put into it some of that sample. She looked at it on the microscope.

The phone rang.
"Kilinger here," he said when he answered the phone. "Yes... okay, I will be there in a minute," and he left her office.

"What is it, Lugma? What have you found?" asked Dr. Kilinger when he arrived to the laboratory.
"You won't believe it, doctor! The sperm is mutating!"
"Lugma, we have injected an experimental serum to that poor kid, it's kind of normal that his sperm has mutated. Even, I would say..." but she raised her hand so he shut up.
"Doctor, I haven't said that it has mutated. What I am telling you is that it IS mutating!" Her eyes went wide and brighter as she kept talking. "I accidentally burned the last samples of the sperm with the Bunsen..."
"You did WHAT?" doctor yelled at her.
"Listen! But it's alright! The sperm has mutated to prevent any harm from the fire! Look at it!"
Lugma moved aside so Kilinger could watch through the microscope. The spermatozoon were bigger than any other he had seen until then, but aside from it, it appeared to be normal. Then, a yellowish light appeared from the left top side of his sight. Lugma had stricken a lighter and had put it next to the sample. The spermatozoon started to change.
Some of them were moving slowly until they stopped from moving, but most of them started to show what it seemed to be a layer of some unknown substance and kept moving, unaffected by the heat. Suddenly, the lighter was taken away. Dr. Kilinger looked at Lugma.
"So... they are resistant to high temperatures... it's somewhat interesting..."
"Keep watching, doctor... keep watching..."
He did as she ordered and, then, the ending of a metallic dropper appeared on sight, letting fall a drop of a substance.
