I was sitting alone in my office feeling the weight of the world pressing down on my shoulders. It was bad enough that Leanne and through her, all my wives and followers witnessed my breakdown. Then to top it off, May Song, a woman I felt closer to than anyone save Angela asked her and my sister wives to marry. That I wanted her made no difference, her path with Mi Ling kitty was to be a different one. Rather than facing that mess, I asked to be alone so I could get my act together.
I was sitting there resting my head on the desk with my eyes closed when I heard the office door open. After a minute I heard Angela say, "Sam, Benny Wabash is here to see you." When I didn't even look at her she added, "Are you going to feel sorry for yourself all day or are you going to work?"
I looked up at her and said, "Angela, you know damn well I never turned down work." I sighed and then added, "What's Benny want this time?"
Angela shrugged her shoulders and replied, "He wouldn't say. He only said he needed to talk to you in person." She lowered her voice, "I smell a rat so watch yourself."
Over the years, Benny had come in and fed me little tidbits of inside information. He knew everyone and for some reason everyone talked in front of him. As a snitch, he excelled and managed to stay on the sidelines without one side or the other taking him out. Wiping my eyes, I took a couple deep calming breaths and said, "Show him in."
Angela opened the door and Benny came rushing in. "Spade, you got to help me." He said quickly.
"Benny, have a drink, take a breath and tell me what the problem is," I replied pulling out a bottle and a couple of glasses. Benny always seemed high strung, but this was new level even for him. I poured two glasses and handed one to him. Before I could take a sip of mine, he finished his drink. Sliding the bottle over I said, "Talk to me Benny."
"Now that Don Bruce is gone and you have taken over the northeast, Don Miguel from Miami has sent a kill squad to take you and anyone associated with you out." He looked at Angela, "You may be good Angela, but against this group you don't stand a chance." He looked at me and added, "Since everyone knows me and my relationship with you, I am on the kill list also."
"I wouldn't worry about them Benny," Angela replied. "Sam took out the Brotherhood of Light without too much problem."
I took another sip and said, "Benny, do you need cash to disappear or would you rather be under my protection while I deal with good old Don Miguel." I had run afoul of Don Miguel more than once over the years. Uncle Gomez and Uncle Marty had used me as a test subject for a new drug. It made the person who took it act and do anything for the people around them. It was only later that I realized that the pair of elderly men who had drugged me were Don Miguel and Don Amech. I really liked Marty, as I referred to Don Amech, the old head of the east coast mob. To my shame I had been indirectly the cause of his death. I had just rescued and fallen in love Cindy and her parents had taken her away from me. Needing someone to talk to I had called Marty. He in turn rushed to come see me and on the way Lenny's men took him out. Once he was out of the way Lenny declared himself Don Bruce. Now I had a chance to pay back Uncle Gomez for drugging me. What that payback was, I still wasn't sure but I knew it wasn't going to be pleasant.
I realized that Benny had been talking and was waiting for a reply. "I'm sorry Benny, could you repeat that last part. I was wool gathering."
"I was asking what do you think I should do?" he said after a worried glance at Angela.
"Take a long vacation overseas. That way you can lose yourself in the crowds. When things die down here, you can return safe and sound." I looked at Angela and then pulled out my comcard. Handing it to him I said, "There's about one hundred g's in the account. Don't make large withdraws and you should be safe."
"I don't know how to thank you," Benny started.
I lifted my hand, "Benny you have always helped me when I needed it. Let me help you for once." I looked at Angela, "Take Benny to the airport and make sure he gets on a plane to London safely. First class."
She looked at me as if I lost my mind for a second before nodding, "Okay Sam. Come on Benny." She said heading to the door.
"But my clothes and stuff," he said to her.
"Buy new. We need to get you somewhere safe first," Angela replied as she led him out.
The minute the door closed I called home. I told Sue Ann that Benny now had my card and to make sure it was fine for him to use it for a total of one hundred thousand dollars. I could hear her typing and her reply, "Okay Samantha, it's all set up."
Mentally Sue Ann asked, "Goddess, why the call instead of just telling me like this?"
"Because Sam thinks the phone is bugged," Angela's voice replied in our heads. "Sue Ann I am giving him my card and taking the Goddess's back." She paused and added, "Woody? May I give him your gift?"
"Yes Angel," I replied mentally. I could tell when the spirit of my dead Angela came forward from where she resided inside the android Angela. She referred to me by pet names we used in high school.
I heard the outer door slam open and started to duck when the inner door of my office opened. Several men burst in and opened fire with automatic weapons. They sprayed the office and desk with their bullets for what seemed like hours before finally stopping. I listened to the sounds of them rushing off before sitting up and looking around. "Well shit," I said as I surveyed the damage. All of the chairs, the little couch, and my desk looked like Swiss cheese. Going over to the window I looked out just in time to see three men jump into a car.
"Jade, some jokers just shot up my office. They got in a dark green a car and are headed west on 4
