We all sat around the table to discuss things while we ate,
"Carmen needs to find a job well away from here and I want to go with her, I can always get cleaning work, the problem is that we only have a few thousand dollars and the rest is invested in the company and you still want that for this new product," Conchita explained.
"I'm sure Stella has made some sort of provision for you two, for all your hard work over the last few years, this is just a discussion of alternatives not a firm decision," I replied "But we will have to wait and see."
"Danno and I could go anywhere where I could get a suitable job but this house is too big for us if we stayed and his is too small," Maddy said looking at Alicia and nodded for her to comment.
"I have enough money to buy an apartment and convert a bedroom to a studio but I would rather stay with all of you as a family," she said.
"How could we do that?" Asked Carmen.
"Well I thought that if you two are in no great rush to leave, we could all stay here for now," she explained,
"Maddy and Carmen work together to find themselves jobs fairly close together but far enough away from here to be safe.
Danno sells his house and lives here of course and puts his things into store but keeps the warehouse for the company work. When they have jobs, the three of them can rent an apartment, move in and start looking for somewhere close with a house like this one for all of us to live as a family," Alicia explained and smiled happily.
"Don't you want to meet people and maybe get married and have kids Alicia?" Conchita asked.
"Yes but I could do that with all of you, Carmen and you could do the same."
"Me! I'm too old to have any more kids, much as I would have liked another when I was younger but I was not going to have another one with that bastard Carlos!" She stated emphatically, "Who would want me anyway?"
"Mama! We have the best of all men here! We all love him and he loves all of us, who better to be the father of our children!" Carmen cried. Conchita sat there with her mouth open, staring at her daughter.
"I...you... all of us... him? She spluttered looking from her to the others. We waited for her to process what her daughter and then Conchita said,
"I suppose you are right, we would have a long search to find someone as good as him for each of us and we know he can keep up with us and we'd have to have some sort of rota..."
"MAMA!" Shouted Carmen and we all laughed, I looked to Maddy and she nodded and smiled, decision made.
"I suggest that we put the new product on hold until after the reading of the will, I will contact the manufacturers and Rachel and let them know. Meanwhile we go on as normal while I put my house up for sale, some of my more valuable items will have to come here and I'll see what I can sell."
I called Rachel and explained about the delay and asked her to make an appointment with her father. Next I called the Manager in Miami and told him about the death and although we would probably want to go ahead, we had to wait for the will to be read first.
Art auctions were next, I found that there was going to be a good one in a few weeks, so contacted them to put all the Arlo Makinen paintings in it as separate lots and emailed photos of all of them from my phone to the Auctioneers to put on their website and in their catalogue, we discussed how much reserve to put on each one.
I drove to work and packed for two mornings and at home I started sorting my valuables to take to Duncellin in the afternoons. I returned on Saturday, arriving at five and putting the valuables in the safe and informing Maddy on what I'd done.
We all went to Anton's stud on Sunday, meeting him and Talia there. Alicia stayed in the car but asked us to get something set up. We approached Gary and asked for a bridle and blanket to be hung on Rebel's corral rail. He looked confused but sent someone to do it. We all stayed by the main stable block to watch as Alicia got out of the car and approached Rebel's corral. He trotted over to the rail and she hugged him and he nickered while the mares still hung back as usual.
She talked and stroked him for a couple of minutes then went to pick up the bridle and he backed off and snorted angrily. Alicia dropped the bridle on the ground and spoke again and he came back, she carried on talking and then reached for the blanket and he reared again and pulled away from her. She spoke again and dropped the blanket onto the bridle, after a few seconds he returned to her yet again and she stroked him again.
Next she climbed over the fence and stepped up to Rebel's head and hugged his neck then let go and walked along his flank stroking his back and his rear and up the other side to his head again. She held his head in her hands and kissed his nose and moved along his flank again and pushed his rear (her hundred and twenty pounds to his three quarters of a ton?) round to be parallel to the rail and he just let her.
She walked back to her initial starting point climbed up and sat on the top rail, then she stood up and stepped across and slid her leg over his back and was sat on him. His head came up and he snorted but she lay down and hugged his neck again and he calmed down again and just stood there. We were all stunned to see this young slim black woman from the city, lying on this almost wild stallion and he was letting her!
Alicia sat up and patted his neck, took a handful of his mane, spoke again and pulled right and he turned right and then walked, she changed hands and pulled left and he turned left. She patted his neck and let go and he stopped, she must have done something we couldn't see because she didn't use her hands and he turned right again and walked in a circle, then did a left circle.
She lay down again and talked, then sat up and he moved forwards again and stopped, then she guided him back parallel to the rail but closer so that she could pull herself off the horse and climbed down. She went to his head again, hugged and kissed him, then climbed over the fence.
She walked back to the car and came back with a shopping bag and climbed over again and went to his head and brought an apple out of the bag and gave him. She walked towards the mares with Rebel following, but they ran off, he neighed and they stopped, looking nervous, Alicia gave each an apple and Rebel another one before climbing out and joining us with a big smile on her face.
"I was amazed at what you did with him before, but that was absolutely..." Gary said "I don't have the words, he should have thrown you all across the corral but he let you steer him like a trained pony, he even told the mares to stand still for you."
"You have to understand him, I had you put the bridle and blanket on the fence and he knew what they were for, he didn't like it when I picked up the bridle until I dropped it, the same with the blanket," Alicia explained, "I let him know I would not try to use them on him."
"But how did you get him to let you sit on him?" Anton asked.
"I talked to him as though he was six or seven year old child, I praised him and hugged him, then explained what I wanted to do. He did it because he wanted to please me, the apples were a thank you to him and the ones for the mares were to show that I wanted to be their friend too, but of course he had to have a second one because he is the boss."
"She is amazing Gary, what's she going to do next time?" Anton said, still getting over the shock.
"I dunno Boss," he replied.
"Actually Anton, I would like to walk him over to your horse track over there and ride him around for a couple of laps, please," Alicia said.
"Of course my dear, if I refused Rebel would probably jump out or his corral and bite my ass," Anton replied and we all laughed at the thought, even Anton.
She walked back to Rebel with Gary and led the horse out when the man had opened the gate. Once in the riding track she sat on the fence again and Rebel came in close so that she could get on his back. She hugged his neck, sat up and he walked, then trotted, making her bounce so she lay down again.
He increased his speed at her urging and galloped around the quarter mile oval track, while she clung on tightly. After two circuits he slowed and she sat up while he walked back to the start and let her slide off.
She led him back to his corral, hugged and kissed his nose and returned to us, smiling. The girls and I, except Alicia (who thought Rebel would be jealous) went for a ride on some of Anton's horses for half an hour while she watched, then we went home.
Things stayed much the same at Duncellin, Alicia had now painted another seven of the 'Horse' totalling sixty-five plus the one of Rebel which was magnificent.
I packed orders and took Stella's jewellery to Rachel's father to be valued, he said they were all good pieces and gave me a valuation of $85,000. I also sold the last four diamonds to him for $132,888 and chatted with Rachel to keep her updated.
At home I called a my parents former realtor company to put my house on the market, they sent a pretty red headed woman in her late twenties called Alison out to value the property and after looking around gave a figure of $650,000.
I laughed and showed her the secret rooms and it was her turn to laugh and revalued it at $1,200,000 and took a lot of photos of the various rooms and the aspects from the outside. I was very pleased and told her that Duncellin would be up for sale early next year and I would call her.
She gave me her personal card and smiled and I thought I could have probably fucked her on the spot if I guaranteed her the sale as she worked mainly on commission. I gave her a set of keys and the code for the gates and the house so that she could show people around.
I received a call from the lawyer to say that he had correlated Stella's estate and we made an appointment for Friday sixteenth at two pm. I had previously spoken to him and asked for a list of beneficiaries for Stella's will and was told that the four women and I were the only ones on the list.
On Friday, I drove the Lincoln with the girls to the lawyer's office and parked, we had to wait for a few minutes until our appointment, then were ushered into his office. There were five chairs set out for us so we sat down, there was also a table set out with glasses and water, coffee and cups. I made coffee for myself and Conchita and gave water to the others and waited for the lawyer.
He came in and shook all our hands and offered his condolences on our loss.
