My Descent into Slavery and Eventual Resurrection, Ch 11
Maui Marriages
Apikalia was back at eight the next morning. We were dressed when she arrived so she wouldn't even think sex might be involved in her job. Hannah got her on the payroll.
"You're getting a ten thousand advance on your salary," Hannah said. "We'll take a thousand a month out until it's paid back in ten months. Ange, take this young woman out for clothes, the works. As soon as she's properly dressed, we can put her to work."
"Of course. Come along, Apikalia. We have a car waiting outside." Angelique took her hand and led her out the door.
The poor girl looked gobsmacked, still not believing this was happening to her. Master had already called the resort management and told them he was hiring her and to find a replacement.
Sahar and I had to come up with the lines we wanted to say to each other at our wedding. We spent the morning doing that, dressed, unfortunately, as we didn't know when Apikalia would return.
Deciding what I wanted to say was easy. Deciding how I wanted to say it, was much harder. I had no idea if Sahar was struggling with her vows as much as I was. I didn't even know if she was writing them in English. Writing in Arabic might be much easier for her. We were sitting across from one another, not next to each other. I'd look up from my paper and look at her, intent on her own words. Roberta came in around half past ten.
"How do you want your hair done tomorrow?" Roberta asked. "Do you want a haircut or do you want to leave it long?"
I hadn't cut my hair in four months. It had grown substantially from the way I kept it on the ship, and for most of my college life.
"Sahar, I'll defer to your wishes, love. Do you want my hair the way it was, or longer like it is now?"
"I fell in love with you with short hair, but I've grown to like the long look. Perhaps just even it up a little, but keep it long."
"There you have it. What time are you doing our hair? And for that matter, who's doing all the others' hair?"
"I'm doing you, Sahar and Miranda. I'm doing Miranda at ten, you at eleven and Sahar after lunch. Angelique is doing Hibbah and Fatima, hair and makeup. You saw how great she made Fatima when she showed up for dinner that time. Francesca and Belle are having theirs done at the resort salon. They're both used to outside salons anyway since they aren't on the ship all the time. I think everyone else is doing their own hair except for Evelyn and Regina. They're having theirs done by the resort too."
"That's because Bill can afford it."
"Yeah. I looked at their prices. I couldn't afford to have my hair done there."
"I should have Angelique do my makeup too. I never really wore much before, but wedding pictures last forever. I'll ask her when she gets back."
Almost as I spoke, Angelique and Apikalia were arriving. Apikalia was wearing a sky blue skirt, white blouse, navy blue blazer, red neck scarf, mocha stockings and two inch heels.
I stood up. "Apikalia, we haven't been properly introduced before. My name is Beth Wilson. This is my fiancée, Sahar Hafeez. Sahar is also my bodyguard. This is my friend, Roberta, who's going to be doing my hair tomorrow before the wedding. The fat, pregnant woman is my very dear friend and Joshua's wife, the Honorable Miranda Ward-Greenbriar, US Congresswoman from North Carolina."
"Wait until you get pregnant and see how I insult you," Miranda said, laughing.
I laughed with her. "I can hardly wait. The taller blonde is my friend Francesca Rawlins, who works in the Congresswoman's home office in North Carolina, and her fiancée is the shorter, brown haired woman. They're also getting married tomorrow. You've met Hannah, Angelique and Mr. Greenbriar. For whatever it's worth, Hannah and Angelique are also married, if Ange hadn't told you already. Hannah is Mr. Greenbriar's personal assistant or PA. She'll also be one of my bridesmaids tomorrow. Angelique is a model.
"Angelique, I was wondering if you could work your makeup magic on me before the wedding tomorrow. I'm a plain Jane who's never learned the finer points of makeup, since college students like me don't worry about looking attractive."
"Be happy to. Give me about thirty minutes before you put your dress on."
"Sahar, you want in on this too. Angelique is the pro when it comes to looking gorgeous."
"Please and thank you," Sahar said.
"Once it's on, no kissing until the ceremony," Angelique warned us.
"Damn, it's hard keeping my lips to myself around my honey." I smiled at her. "Especially those other lips." The others tittered at my statement.
"Why don't we all eat," Master said. "We need to be at rehearsal by one. Apikalia, you're welcome to dine with us."
******
The rehearsal was hurried due to the wedding to follow. The resort had a special activities director, one of whose functions was to manage weddings. Because we had four couples, ours was a little unwieldy and cumbersome. We mostly followed the instructions of the director. The judge wasn't there, but he'd been given a list of the names of all the happy couples and the order they'd be married in, so to speak. Despite ours being the first wedding announced, we'd be the last to be pronounced wife and wife.
Apikalia was taking copious notes, listening intently to everything the SA director was saying and the order in which things were to be done and where the flowers were to be placed. I asked for a Unity candle and no one knew what I was talking about.
"It's just a very pretty, large sized candle and Sahar and I have to light this candle together, with two tapers. It symbolizes taking the two flames that were our lives before and making it a single flame, burning as one."
Apikalia added it to her list.
"You know," Sahar quietly said, "we'll never be a single flame. There will always be other people in our lives."
"I know, Sahar. And I'll never minimize the affect that they'll have in our lives. But there will only be one I unite with in marriage. Only you. I'm granting you that part of my life no one else will ever have. I may love others, have sex with others, but I chose you to marry, and I'll never regret that choice. I hope you never regret marrying me either, and all the wild stuff we'll do, we'll do together, as partners."
"When you put it that way; where do I sign up?"
"Right here." I pointed to my lips. "By affixing your lips to mine right now, you sign up for a lifetime."
"Do I have to use tongue?" Sahar asked.
"It's not a requirement, just a perk."
Sahar slipped me some tongue. Lots of tongue. For quite some time.
