Chapter 2 - Tesla Had a Cat, You Know

"As you enter the old factory, dimly lit in ambiguous places by greenish light set at strange angles, you can hear the distant rumble of some kind of machinery going. It's obviously not any of the old and derelict units littered about the filthy area, but from somewhere further off and, you think, below." Zane leaned in, looking over the top of the cardboard barrier that was his Gamemaster Screen. An intense expression spread across his face as he set the mood of the scene.

"Is Thunderstrike's 'ThunderWarning' sense activating?" Evan asked, looking just as intent.

Behind the screen, the sound of Zane rolling some dice proceeded him shaking his head. "No. He is not sensing any immediate danger to himself, at least, not yet."

Effecting a slight drawl to the words, which she used to denote that she was speaking 'in character', Chloe said. "Evah wonder why everah big, bad, wolf makes they'r den in some ol' factory shell, Thundah?" It was intended to emulate an old Mid-Atlantic dialect, ala Hildy Johnson from 'My Girl Friday'.

Changing his own pitch and cadence to suggest a gruffer and more 'manly' persona, Evan growled. "Because it's easier for trash like Professor Plague and the Black Bard to hide among all the rest of the garbage." He gave a snide sniff, pretending to look around cautiously at the imagined scene.

"Issa thinks itta 'cause dey already made ta supports lotta sparkys." Mittens had her own character, Wonderfluff, chime in. "De's widgets n' wadjits all kinda heavy-duty!" Her character was meant to be an alien creature from a highly advanced civilization, but was still trying to get the hang of 'Earth speak'. It essentially gave her freedom to make her character's dialog as goofy as she wanted.

"I suppose yah got me there, Fluff." Chloe drawled back to her, giving Mittens a little wink. "A'course, I can't say I reallah disagree with Thundah's answah, eithah."

"So, what are each of your characters doing?" Zane prompted them, trying to get them back on track of the moment.

"Givin' all thah rumblin' coming from downstahs, there must be some kindah way down." Chloe replied in character. "How 'bout we split up and try ta find a way down therah?" She looked to Zane, reverting to her normal voice. "I reach up and turn on the 'beta-ray vision' setting of my Bomber-Goggles and begin scanning for visible hidden doors, stairs, or elevators as I carefully fly around, staying low to the ground."

Mittens smiled proudly at her sister submissive, loving how much she really got into her character. She'd even styled herself in a sort of 'retro-40's' look, with back-seamed stockings, vintage-looking house dress, and a pair of t-straps. While it wasn't extremely overt, it was certainly more effort than Mittens' own jean shirts and stretched-neck tee-shirt with '+3 Kitty of Cuteness' on it.

Chloe also always tried to refer to everything she did from an 'in-game' perspective, describing the actions of using her powers, which she always used the character's name for, not the game rules terms. She said it made her feel more immersed into the scene. Amusingly, she'd noticed that Chloe's efforts to be more in character with what she did had influenced the rest of the group to be more immersive with their own actions.

Evan had begun thinking of the disadvantage offsets built into his character as personality aspects, not just a way to get more points to build powers with. Xander had become more apt to actually play out social interactions, rather than just make a skill roll to determine his effectiveness. Even Holly, who was notorious for making mostly combat-centric characters, had devoted some effort into fleshing out new, non-combat, aspects of her character to give her more interaction hooks.

There was just something memetic about Chloe, her spirit and determination usually inspiring everyone around her. Even Mittens found herself pushing herself more now that Chloe was in her life. She'd always been pretty dedicated to her chosen role in the lifestyle and her relation with her Master, but she'd found herself trying even harder to embody the aspect of a cat lately.

At least, in ways she found fun and amusing. Mittens was always a 'cat-GIRL' first and 'just' a cat, second. However, Chloe had motivated her to put more thought into ways to accentuate her feline persona. Just the other day, she'd slipped into Master's office while he was working and curled up on his feet beneath his desk to take a brief nap. It had amused him and he'd rewarded her with some very enjoyable attention for it later.

"Mittens, what is Wonderfluff doing?" Zane prompted her, drawing her away from her wondering thoughts. "Just looking around too?"

She gave a quick glance at the sheet with all her powers and statistics. "I's gonna turn on tha WonderWobble an' see what happens." She said mischievously.

Evan's head snapped towards her in alarm. "Wait, what?!" He threw his hands up melodramatically. "Mittens! That will pretty much announce to them that we're here. We're trying to surprise them, remember?"

"If we can hear a rumble of machinery from beneath what is going to be thick concrete floors to hold all this heavy equipment, then they shouldn't be able hear anything turning on up here." Mittens explained, looking to Zane to see if his expression showed agreement. Her 'WonderWobble' power caused all mechanical devices in her area to power up and activate. The power was based on notion of her character 'wobbling in place' and creating a bunch of static electricity.

Evan didn't look all that convinced. "And if it turns on security alarms too? Remember what happened when you used it in The Banker's secret vaults?"

She did remember. It had made for a much more exciting session, turning it into a madcap escape from the heart of an enemy lair. Xander's character, Mister Phantom, had been so effective at getting them to their goal undetected that the whole adventure, up to that point, had been just Xander making a series of rolls. She was pretty sure that Zane was grateful for the chance to actually enact some of the things he'd come up with for the team to face.

Of course, Evan had seen it as a major mishap, but the rest of the players, even Xander, had been glad she'd done it. In this instance though, she was pretty sure that if there were any security alarms, they'd likely already have been set off. It was Mister Phantom who was the expert at bypassing alarms and going undetected. Wonderfluff, Golden Bombshell, and Thunderstrike were the three worst characters at anything stealthy.

"Is Wonderfluff turning on the Wobble?" Zane asked her, a look in his eye that suggested he was really hoping for a 'yes'.

However, before she could answer, and likely make Zane's day, Holly bounded into the gaming area. Slinging off her backpack and dropping into an empty chair next to Mittens, she gave a sigh. "I am so sorry we're late. Xander should be here in a second, he needed to grab his stuff from his trunk."

Evan gave a dismissive wave and a quick smile. "No biggie. Finals need to take precedent. We've easily worked around you guys until you could get here." His expression returned to a frown. "Though, I think Mittens is about to get us all caught...again."

Holly gave a little chuckle. "Well, good. That will make it easier to work in Steel Maiden and Mister Phantom. We can come save you."

Evan rolled his eyes. "Or, you know, the two of you could just suddenly show up BEFORE she ruins our element of surprise. Mister Phantom is who we really needed anyway."

Holly pretended to not to hear the response, busying herself with pulling out all her gaming supplies, though a deeply amused grin betrayed her. Mittens couldn't help but grin as well at the exasperated scowl on Evan's face. If it wasn't for the fact that he usually had as much fun as the rest of the group when she caused havoc, she might feel sorry him. However, despite all his usual grousing over things, she honestly believed it was more of his way of trying to stay in character than really having a problem with it.

It didn't hurt that Zane was pretty good at making sure that Evan's character got some shining moments in whatever chaos she whipped up. In truth, a lot of the time, the crazy choices she made were at his request. He worked best in a storm.

Her attention was caught by a sheath of papers slipping out of Holly's bag and scattering into the floor. She immediately ducked down beneath the table to grab them for her. She nearly hit her head on the table in surprise when Chloe, casually, fanned her legs apart for a moment to reveal that she'd slipped off her underwear beneath the dress, her skirt hiked up just enough to give a nice view. With a chuckle, she considered crawling over to take advantage of that, but thought better of it.

While the group were more than aware of her and Chloe's lifestyle, there were certain lines they didn't want to cross with them, if only to avoid any possible awkwardness. That didn't really stop her and Chloe from occasional mischief, but they always kept it very subtle and very careful. As casually as they had bloomed open, Chloe's knees slide smoothly back together, triggering the skirt to droop back down, as Holly joined Mittens to help gather the papers.

"Thanks." She sighed, accepting the disorganized stack from Mittens and paying no attention to anything from the other side of the table. "I just crammed all this in here after the exam and forgot."

Mittens looked at the pages now, recognizing them as not being gaming notes. Everything was organized test preparation notes. "That one is wrong, by the way." She said off-handedly.

Holly blinked. "What?"

"You list one of Thomas Edison's inventions as being 'radio', but that was actually invented by Nikola Tesla." She tapped the top sheet of Holly's notes. "I think Edison did some things with radio and was probably the first to market them, but he didn't invent them."

Holly stared at the page, then at Mittens, a look of mingled surprise and horror. "Are you...are you serious? These were the notes I used for the final!"

Mittens just gave a shrug as they rose back up, her friend looking at the traitorous notes with a dumbstruck expression. "If you got them from the official textbook, maybe the teacher won't know that it's wrong either."

"What's wrong?" Xander asked, taking his seat at the table with them.

"Mittens found an error in my finals notes." Holly explained.

"When?" Evan asked, looking at them in surprise.

"Just now, when she dropped them." Mittens replied. "I spotted it as I was handing them back."

"Apparently, I listed Edison as the inventor of radio, which is wrong." Holly elaborated.

"Oh, yeah, that is wrong." Evan agreed. "That was Marconi."

"Actually, it was Tesla." Mittens corrected him with a chuckle.

"No it wasn't." Evan rebuked quickly. "No offense, Mittens, but I'm a science nerd and, well, I've actually gone to college. I think I'd know this a bit better than you."

"Hey!" Holly barked, glaring at him. "Mittens having not gone to college doesn't mean she's stupid!"

Evan sputtered, throwing his hands up, and quickly backpedaling verbally. "I didn't say she was 'stupid'! I just... I just meant that this is more my area of expertise and what I'm studying in college."

"Well, it sure didn't sound that way, you ass!" Holly continued, looking irate. However, Mittens put a paw on her arm.

"It's okay, Holly." She said soothingly to the both of them. "I wasn't insulted and I got what he meant. I'm sure he's probably right and I don't know what I'm talking about."

"Per Wikipedia: 'Guglielmo Marconi developed the first apparatus for long-distance radio communication'." Xander said, reading from his phone.

"See?" Mittens said, waving a paw. "I don't have it right."

"Actually, you do." Zane said, almost absently, his eyes on something behind his screen. "At least, depending on how you define it. Marconi is credited with the invention because he was the first one to receive a patent for the technology and create a radio receiver. However, Tesla actually conceived the idea of using radio and how it could be done two years earlier. However, he considered radio to be an inferior communications method, compared to his Wardenclyffe experiment, so he never pursued it."

Evan stared at the gamesmaster, looking a little dubious. "Says what?"

"Research papers, transcripts of lectures he gave, witness accounts." Zane replied, looking up with a grin. "It's actually a documented fact. Marconi is still considered the inventor, because he held the actual patent and because it was his design that got implemented. However, Tesla conceived it before he did. That was actually something I learned while doing research for the Cult of the Bolt story arc."

"Well, either way, it wasn't Edison." Holly groaned. "And I was already a little worried that I didn't do all that well on the test."

Mittens gave her a pat. "I wouldn't worry that much about it. I'm pretty sure the rest of the list is good, so I doubt it will hurt you too bad."

"You don't know Doctor 'Jerk'ins." Holly grumbled.

"Doctor Jurgins isn't that bad." Evan replied sourly, likely more sore over Zane correcting him than anything with the teacher. "He's just...very serious about his subject."

Mittens gave a little pat to Holly's shoulder. "Well, I'll still keep ma paws crossed for you."

"Right now, I want to just focus on game." Holly said, blowing out a long breath. "Catch us up."

Chloe waved a hand at Zane to get his attention. "I'm actually wanting to run up the street to grab a snack. Anyone else want anything? I figure Evan can catch up Holly and Xander while me and Mittens grab everything."

She quickly jotted down a list of what different people requested and then grabbed Mittens' wrist to guide her out of the shop and up the street. Once they were outside and walking, Chloe glanced towards her. "Are you okay?"

The question caught Mittens off-guard, seeming to come out of nowhere. "Huh? Why wouldn't I be?"

"What Evan said. I wanted to make sure that you didn't feel hurt by it." Chloe explained softly, looking at her with a compassionate expression.

"Oh, no." Mittens chuckled. "I know it aggravates him when I have Wonderfluff cause chaos, but he always--"

"Not about that." Chloe said quickly, cutting her off. "The whole 'never went to college' thing. I saw you twinge when he said it. I know you brushed it off, but I know you, kitty-cat. I know you don't always want to let people know when they accidently hurt your feelings."

Mittens shrugged. "Meh. I wouldn't say it 'hurt my feelings', I knew what he meant and know that Evan isn't great at phrasing things sometimes."

"But it did sting a bit?" Chloe persisted.

Honestly, she hadn't even been aware that she'd flinched at the comment, much less felt stung by it. "No, not really. It might have touched an unconscious nerve, maybe?" Mittens gave another vague shrug, a coy smirk coming to her lips. "'Course, I's not as inta thinkin' 'bout stuff like that as you." She teased playfully.

Chloe had spent much of her first several months with them doing a lot of soul-searching and exploring her true desires and wants. It had all worked out and she was more confident and sure of what she wanted, and needed, than ever. However, she still was prone to bouts of deep self-examination and, occasionally, over-thinking.

"I just want to make sure you're okay." Chloe said with a slight smirk of her own. "I know you're a lot more resilient that I am, but I also know you still have feelings."

Mittens gave it a moment, let it ruminate a little as they walked. Finally, she gave a little bob of her head. "I guess, sometimes I feel a little...I don't know, inferior? I mean, you and Master both have degrees. So does almost everyone we know and spend time with. PapaBear, Butterfly, Shawn. Hell, Mistress Victoria has multiple advanced degrees. The whole gaming group is in college; Zane's about to graduate." She gave a little chuckle. "And here I am: a high school drop out."

"First of all, Mittens, you ARE NOT inferior." Chloe responded firmly. "You are the reason I was able to work through all my own worries and doubts last year. Just because you don't have a degree doesn't make you anything less or not just as smart as anyone else. I mean, look at that whole 'Tesla versus Macaroni' thing."

Mittens giggled. "Macaroni? Do you mean, 'Marconi'?"

Chloe waved absently. "Whatever his name is. The point is that you actually were right." She paused a moment, then peered at the cat-girl shrewdly. "And, I bet you knew it. You just didn't want to get into an argument with Evan over something trivial."

"Yeah, I did know." Mittens admitted with a wink. "Though, as far as the teacher is concerned, I'm sure the Evan's answer would have been the more acceptable one." She flapped a paw back and forth absently. "Like Holly said, either way, it wasn't Edison."

"The point is that you knew and the kid whose major it is, apparently, didn't." Chloe fixed her with a meaningful stare.

Mittens gave a little giggle. "He's a computer programming major. That has about as much to do with the invention of radio as it does with whipped cream." She fixed Chloe with a kind look. "I love you, Chloe, but I really am okay."

She took a hold of Chloe's hand. "I appreciate that you're trying to 'cheer me up' or something, but I honestly don't need it. All I meant is that I sometimes feel like the odd kitty out. All of you have these stories and experiences that I don't. That's it."

"But you said it makes you feel inferior." Chloe said, still looking a little concerned. "I don't want you to ever feel like you are somehow lesser."

Mittens gave a dismissive wave of a paw. "Just a bad choice of word. I meant to say something more like..." She shifted into a hammy melancholy tone, putting her free paw to her temple and releasing a sigh before saying. "... like 'horribly deprived of basic intelligence'."

Chloe gave her a little swat on the shoulder, grimacing at her, though there was plenty of humor in her eyes. "Okay, okay. I get it. Mean kitty." Chloe said wryly. "I just love you and want to make sure you were okay."

"I am." Mittens replied, giving the hand she was holding a squeeze. "I do appreciate it. Really. It means a lot that you're checking. I'm a tough kitten though." She leaned over and gave Chloe a kiss on the cheek as they stepped into the convenience store, the blast of frigid air inside feeling instantly bracing in comparison to the warm air outside.

As they went about gathering all the requested junk-food, Mittens considered her own words. The truth was, it did sometimes make her feel a little bit inferior. While she didn't see herself as stupid, she was often all too aware that she was one of the least educated people in their group. While it didn't truly bother her, there were times when she felt like she'd missed some quintessential part of life. She didn't need a degree, nor really cared if she ever got one, but sometimes she thought it might be nice to have the experience.

Ultimately though, if she had to choose between her life as it was and one that was 'more normal', she would pick being her Master's cat every time. She knew that the reality of most things never really lived up to the fantasy. Her life as a cat had managed to come pretty close to disproving that, but she considered it the exception to the rule.

"Sodas?"

"Check."

"Corn chips, green-chili-flavor, potato chips, honey-mustard-flavor, and cheddar pretzels?"

"Check, check, check."

"Burritos, badly microwaved?"
