Mid July

Year 4 of Us

Thursday

I walked into the bedroom and smiled. All three of my loves were asleep, with Mir on her back, Lacey snuggled on her right and Cathy on her left. There was just enough room for me on the bed if I settled in and spooned Lacey.

I started to take my glasses off when Mir's eyes opened. She looked around, slightly startled, as she tried to sit up.

"What's the matter, Mir?"

"I have to pee!"

"Already?" Lacey woke and shifted towards the edge of the bed. "I'll move, love!"

When she had to pee, Mir could move surprisingly fast, despite being near term with twins. Lacey and I helped her, then she went to the bathroom.

"Why were you out of bed, Wyatt?"

I shrugged. "I thought I heard Jean, so I got up and looked in on her. She's fine, so I made a check on the twins."

"And?"

"Oh," I smiled at her. "They're fine, too."

She bopped my upper arm. "You!" Then she smiled at me. "The dogs?"

"Tails wagged at me, then they laid their heads down."

Lacey giggled, then leaned her head on my upper arm. We sat there for a few minutes, then I straightened up. "She's taking a long time in there."

"Yeah."

I got up and went to the bathroom doorway. "Mir? Honey? Are you okay?"

"I think that it's time!" I looked in and she was sitting on the toilet, gasping. "My water has broken!"

I stepped back, looking at Lacey. "It's time!"

Lacey shook Cathy awake, and they both began moving, knowing their tasks.

I moved into the bathroom, Mir looking up at me. "Don't give me that look, Red. Until Lacey gets in here, you're stuck with me. Have you had a contraction?" She shook her head. "Okay." I knelt in front of her, taking her hands in mine. I listened as more fluid splashed into the toilet.

"Your knees?"

"They're fine." I leaned in and kissed her quickly. "The routines are in process."

"Willi?"

"Cathy's getting her and the girls."

Mir snickered. "Thank God, they came in this Sunday."

"Yeah. That was good timing on your part."

"My part?" She smiled, and that made me smile. Her breathing was easier, and she leaned back on the toilet.

Lacey came in and put her hand on my shoulder. "Any contractions, Mir?" After a head shake, I was told to go ahead and get dressed. "I'll stay here with her." After I stood, Lacey gave me a quick kiss. As I turned to look, she was pushing hair from Mir's face.

Roni, Tina, and Mir's sister Willi were standing in the bedroom. "How is she?" Roni asked.

"About as well as expected," I said, bending down to grab my shoes and socks. I changed shorts quickly, because I needed the pockets of my cargo shorts. "So, I guess that Willi is going with us? Cathy's staying because of Jean."

Tina nodded after looking at the other two. "Yeah, we'll be here until Lacey calls. I expect that Duncan will be scared."

As I stood up, I smiled at her. "With you two and Cathy here, he'll be fine. I reckon Sam will be excited when she finds out that the babies are on the way."

Mir made her way out of the bathroom, with Lacey holding one arm and Willi holding the other. We got her down the stairs, and I scooted into the garage to pull the car to the front door. We helped Mir into the back seat, with Lacey beside her.

"I reckon you've got shotgun, Willi." She nodded before getting in.

As I pulled away from the house, I heard a groan from the back. "Contraction?"

"Yes," answered Lacey. "First one. Zero forty-five."

"Got it."

Willi looked at me. "Keeping the times straight?"

"Yep."

"Cathy says that Labor and Delivery have been alerted and warned that Mir is a redhead."

I just nodded and kept driving.

"What's her hair color have to do with it?" Willi asked after several minutes.

"Sometimes," Mir answered, breathing heavily, "redheads need blood during birth, as well as having issues with some of the anesthetics."

"Oh!" Willi's blue eyes were wide. "Is she going to be alright?" she leaned close to ask softly.

"I'm going to be fine!" Mir snapped.

"Easy, Red. She's just worried."

"I'm sorry, Daddy."

Willi looked at me, then turned to look at her sister. "What the...?"

"Don't worry about, Willi," I reassured her.

"I'll explain after we get these babies home," Mir promised her sister.

"Okay," was her response as we pulled into the parking lot, then stopped right outside Labor and Delivery's door.

Two nurses and an orderly came out as we stopped. With all of us working, Mir was helped out of the car and was placed in a wheelchair. Just as she made contact, she grimaced and groaned.

"Contraction number two," announced Lacey, so one of the nurses wrote that down after checking her watch.

"When was the first one?" she asked.

"Zero forty-five," I replied. When everyone looked at me, I just shrugged. "Ex-military."

The first nurse just nodded as the second opened the door. The orderly carefully pushed Mir through the door as I followed them in.

"Wyatt?"

"Right behind you, Mir." I saw her shoulders droop. Once inside, I moved up and rested a hand on her shoulder.

"I'm so glad you're here," she said as she patted my hand.

"Me, too." I looked over my shoulder and Lacey gave me a huge smile.

"I'm glad you here, too!" she said, and Mir chuckled.

As they wheeled Mir into a delivery room, I realized that Willi was standing back, beyond Lacey.

"C'mon, Willi. Don't stand out there!" She flashed me a nervous smile, then followed us into the room. We stood off to the side as the medical personnel helped Mir onto the bed. While one nurse got several devices attached to Mir, the other was asking us questions and filling out some forms.

I asked, "You have blood ready, just in case?"

She looked at me and nodded. "Yes, sir. Hopefully, it won't be needed, but we're ready."

Shortly afterwards, Mir was on the bed, looking bedraggled. "I look horrible, don't I?"

Willi moved close and took her hand. "No. Only frightening."

"Blonde brat," Mir chuckled.

"Red witch," replied Willi.

"Ah, sisters," I said, grinning. As I moved closer to Mir, an orderly brought two chairs into the room.

"I noticed that there was only one chair, and I figured that all of you might want to sit down."

"Thank you!" said Lacey, giving him a big smile. He smiled back as he left the room.

"You've done it again, my princess."

She looked at me. "Done what?"

"Made another person fall for you with just your smile."

That earned me a smile as she leaned closer, her face tilted up. I knew what she wanted, so I gave her a soft, sweet kiss.

"Hey!" Mir said. "Where's mine?"

"Right here," I said as I turned and bent over her. Our kiss was soft and sweet, too. Her grey eyes looked into mine. "I'll be with you the entire time."

"Except for potty breaks," added Lacey, her voice light. I looked at her and she just giggled. "He didn't miss the twins, but I was worried for a few minutes."

"I know."

The night was long for all of us, although Mir did doze off now and then. Finally, things began getting seriously busy just before dawn. They got me up behind Mir, where I settled in with her leaning against my chest.

Dr. Kilgore, who had arrived about an hour earlier, smiled at us. "Remember, if needed, we can push you through this door, Mir," she pointed, "and you'll be in an operating room. They're prepped and really hoping that you don't pay them a visit.

"We have blood ready, again, just in case." She looked at me. "If we go into the O.R., Wyatt, you'll have to dismount in a hurry."

"Right!" I put my arms around Mir. "I've got you, love."

She was already breathing hard, but she patted my hands.

One of the nurses looked at my right, then at my left. Her eyes went wide.

"Is there a problem, nurse?" I asked.

"No, no problem, but I think I remember that left leg! About three years ago?" She looked at Lacey. "You were pregnant!" When Lacey nodded, the nurse continued, "you were adamant that he was going to be fine!"

"Yes, yes, I was. And he is!"

"The other scars?"

"Double knee replacement, this February."

Things began to move along as Dr. Kilgore got her mask on and took her position at the foot of the bed. I could just hear the monitors and the doctor over Mir's breathing. I talked to her, pretty much about nothing, like I had with Lacey and Cathy.

"And here's the first baby girl! Does she have a name?"

"Yes," answered Lacey. "This is Haley Michelle Roy."

"How is she?" Mir was anxious.

"She's perfect. She's got Mommy's red hair, too!" Mir laughed, and then another contraction hit, so she went back to work.

It took another forty-five minutes, but finally, our second daughter arrived.

"And who is this? With her mommy's hair, too!"

"This is Olivia Marie Roy."

Soon, both babies were being held by Mir, with a little assistance from me. Mir looked absolutely exhausted, but her face was angelic. Both babies were moving their heads, so Mir offered them each a nipple. They latched on, beginning to suckle.

I looked over at Lacey, who was smiling sweetly. Willi was beside her, holding her hand, looking intently at us.

"Are you okay, Willi?" I asked softly.

"Yes," she answered. "Is she okay?"

Mir nodded as I answered, "Yes, she is. She's very tired and we're not quite done here."

"Mir, I'm glad to say that we only needed a pint of blood," Dr. Kilgore said. Mir nodded sleepily, while the twins were resting comfortably in her arms.

Two nurses came in as Dr. Kilgore stood up as she took off her mask. "Mir, we're going to take them and give them several checks, but I think that they're fine." She looked at us. "We'll clean her up and take her to a regular newborn room. I think that one of you can stay. The other two should go get some food, contact family, that kind of thing."

Mir rolled her head so that she could see me. "Stay?"

Lacey snickered. "I guess the decision has been made."

"I reckon so," I said as I softly kissed Mir's damp hair.

Lacey and Willi stood up, giving Mir hugs. Lacey gave me a quick kiss. "I'll bring you some food."

"Thanks, my princess."

After the nurses gently carried the twins over to one side of the room, Dr. Kilgore smiled at me. "You've got to get off there, Wyatt."

"Yeah, I know, Doc."

Mir wiggled a bit. "Don't go!"

"I need to get down, Mir. I think my legs are asleep, though."

Dr. Kilgore laughed as two more nurses came in. "One of them is going to help Mir sit up while the other helps Wyatt get down."

It took a bit, but I was standing on two very numb feet. I kind of shuffled around, trying to get the feeling back in them. They finished with Mir, so we began a little parade. Mir on the delivery bed, the twins in separate bassinettes, then me. Lacey and Willi caught up just as they helped Mir into a new bed.

I checked the twins, who were sleeping soundly, each with a hand by her face. I looked at them for a moment, then had a small panic attack. I looked at Mir. "Which one is which?" A nurse who had stayed with us laughed softly.

"I was keeping track, Mr. Roy. The first-born is Haley Michelle, right?" I nodded. "We had the time to make a sign, which is on the bassinette. She was the one Mom was holding in her right arm." She gently tapped the bassinette.

I smiled. "So that makes Olivia Marie the one she had held in her left arm, and she's this one." I tapped her bassinette as the nurse nodded. I was looking down at Olivia when she opened an eye, yawned, then drifted back off to sleep.

I looked over at Haley, then back at Olivia. They both had little bracelets on. "What are the bracelets?"

"Oh, those are I.D.'s. Their names on them." Willi answered. "I asked Lacey." She smiled at me.

"How are we...?"

"Going to easily know who is who?" Mir finished, although she was barely holding her eyes open.

"Yeah."

"Colored bracelets to start?" Lacey suggested. "Then that same color in their clothes."

"Why the questions, Mr. Roy? You have twins already, don't you?"

I nodded. "Yeah, but one's a boy, the other's a girl."

She smiled, then headed for the door. "That was easier, wasn't it?"

I plopped onto one of the two reclining chairs in the room. I looked at Mir, who was peacefully asleep. I smiled, then looked at Lacey, then yawned. "I'm exhausted, but I have a couple of color suggestions." Lacey nodded. "Green for Haley and purple for Olivia."

"Why those two colors?" she asked.

"Closest colors to their names." I leaned back in the chair and started lowering the back as I yawned again. "Gonna join me?"

Lacey nodded, moved closer to Willi, then whispered something to her before joining me on the recliner. She snuggled into my arms as I faded out.

Somebody tickled my nose before I heard, "Dada?"

"Sam?" I opened my eyes to my daughter standing next to the recliner, smiling at me.

"Dada, babies!"

"I know, baby girl." I started to sit up, realizing that Lacey wasn't with me. "What time is it?" I yawned.

"Not quite noon," Lacey answered. When I looked around, everyone was in the room. Duncan was staring at his new sisters as Sam joined him.

"Why'd you let me sleep so long?"

Mir answered, "Because we all agreed that I was the only one who had more stress last night and this morning."

I grinned and stood up.

"Dada, new sisters have Mama Miryam's hair!" Duncan was smiling at me. He pointed to each one. "This is Haley! This is Livia!"

I walked over to him, giving him a hug before he turned around again. I hugged Sam, too, before giving Cathy and Jean quick hugs. Locating the bathroom door, I said, "I'll be back in a few minutes."

When I came back, Mir was holding one of the twins. "It's lunch time!" she smiled. I saw something green around the baby's wrist.

"Haley was hungry first?" Mir nodded, so I picked up Olivia after changing her diaper.

"So, my Olivia, are you hungry too?" I cuddled her and noticed that she had a purple ribbon around her wrist. "So, we have their colors already?"

Tina laughed. "No, Lacey called and asked for green and purple ribbons. We stopped on the way in and here they are." She held up two ribbon spools, so I laughed, too, as I walked over to her.

After a hug, I turned to Roni, giving her a hug and making a gentle twirl. "How are you two doing?"

"I'm fine," Roni giggled, "and so is Tina!"

As I lowered Roni, Tina nodded. "We're doing pretty good, Wyatt. I'm glad you called for us!"

"Hey, it would be weird if we had another set of twins in the house without the entire Cavalry team on hand." That got a laugh from everybody.

Olivia began pressing her face into my chest, and when I looked over at Mir, she waved me over as Willi took Haley. As I reached her, Mir had a very contented smile. I handed Olivia to her and smiled myself.

"What?"

"I recognize that smile, Mir."

"You do?"

"Yep. I've seen it on Lacey's face, and on Cathy's."

She looked up. I reached down and caressed her check. "It's what I've started calling the 'contented mommy' face."

"Well, I am content, and still very tired."

I covered a yawn, and Mir giggled.

"How's your back?" Lacey asked from behind me.

"It's... there."

"I was afraid of that." She put a hand on my back, caressing softly. "Let's get you home and into the hot tub." She said as she rested her cheek on my arm.

I looked down at Mir, who nodded. "I think Willi, Tina, and Roni will stick around."

"You bet!" replied Tina. I watched as she swapped keys with Lacey.

"Okay, guys," Cathy said to Duncan and Sam. "Let's say bye-bye to Mama Miriam and your littlest sisters. It's time for lunch at home."

It took a bit, getting the twins ready, because they had to give hugs and kisses to those who stayed. After lots of hugs and kisses between everybody, I gave Mir a last kiss.

Luckily for me, Cathy offered to drive the van home, so I sat in back next to Jean. There was lots of talking and laughing while Jean held my hand and babbled at me. I wasn't sleepy, but I must have done something on that recliner, because my back was really hurting.

After lunch, we let the twins play on the deck while we sat in the hot tub. Neither Sam nor Duncan cared for it, but they loved talking and playing while someone sat in the tub.

"Hey, whose day was it supposed to be?" I was letting my legs float while sitting on one of the benches, with Lacey on left and Cathy on my right. My eyes were closed while I enjoyed the sounds of the kids playing.

I felt a hand brush over my crotch, and I peeked to see Cathy grinning. "It's mine!"

She giggled. "But I totally understand why Mir got most of your attention earlier!" She moved her face closer so that she could kiss me.

"I'm glad that you understand." I smiled at her, then at Lacey.

"Mama?"

"Yes, Sam?"

"Potty!"

"Yikes! Hang on a second!" Lacey stood up, then moved over the side of the hot tub. She wrapped a towel around her waist.

"Me, too, Mama!" Duncan was standing beside his sister, both of them looking distressed.

Lacey wiped some excess water off, then took each of them by the hand. As she headed inside, she said over her shoulder, "I'm glad we bought extra potties!" then they went inside.

"That was a pretty cool idea, my Kitty-cat."

She purred as I caressed her ass. "After the incident on the stairs, it seemed pretty logical."

"Yeah! That was traumatic!" I sighed. "Of course, the twins were really remorseful over it."

"Hey, they couldn't help it."

"Oh, I know. I'm just glad that the odds are they'll forget about it in a few years."

She rested her head on my shoulder. "Maybe Daddy can fill Kitty-cat up after we get them down for a nap."

I smiled at her. "I'd like that," I said as I heard some noise behind me.

"Well, I guess our soaking time is over," Cathy said before she raised herself up and over the side. She dried off before she knelt beside Jean. I heard her sniff and say, "Well, Jeanie, it smells like another delivery has been made."

The baby cooed and gurgled as Cathy picked her up, then settled her on the deck. I clambered to my feet, then got out of the tub, switching it off as I did so. Drying quickly, I took the dirty diaper from Cathy as she lifted it up. I headed inside, meeting the twins as they came through the kitchen door, Lacey close behind.

"Everything okay?"

Lacey nodded with a smile. Seeing Cathy carrying Jean, she laughed. "Ah ha! Jean is hungry!"

"She sure is!"

Cathy relaxed in one of the deck chairs, one of several in the shade, shifting Jean a bit before letting our daughter suckle.

"Thank you for potties, Mama Catty!" Sam said as she patted Jean's back. "Jean is hungry?"

"You're welcome for the potties, Sam." She smiled at Sam who was looking at her. "Yes, Jean is hungry!"

I heard this as I came back onto the deck, where Lacey was relaxing in one of the other shaded chairs.

"So, are we going back to the hospital later?"

Lacey shook her head. "According to Roni, Mir said: stay home, get some sleep, and come get us tomorrow."

"How about Tina, Roni, and Willi?" I sat in a chair and stretched my legs out.

Lacey looked at her phone while keeping her eyes on the twins as they played with blocks. "They'll be here sometime after supper."

I just nodded. "Sounds good. Plans?"

"Plans?" I could see Lacey smile, but she didn't look at me. "Oh, you mean for us?" I nodded. "Well, I thought we'd fix supper in a bit, then try to get back into the routine."

"Good."

"Good?" Cathy asked, a smile on her face. "Don't you like having to rush to the hospital right after midnight and stay awake until your daughters are born?"

I guess my expression gave her my answer, because she giggled. "It was all worthwhile, Cathy," I grinned at her. "But there are times excitement can be painful."

"Painful?"
