"How do I describe what you're feeling right now, Wyatt?" Roni asked me as I finished loading the dishes from supper into the dishwasher.
"Who wants to know?" I looked at her once I had set up the dishwasher to run later that night.
"Who else?" Roni smirked at me.
I grinned when I realized that Roni had her phone in one hand, with her free hand poised over it. "Texting with my Princess?"
"Of course," Roni answered as I leaned over and kissed her forehead.
"Tell her that I'm not as tired as I was. That I love her. That I want to just hold her tonight."
"Okay." She typed into her phone, waited a couple of minutes, then she giggled.
"What?"
Roni just kept giggling.
"What, Roni?"
"She said that while you *are* going to hold her, that won't be all you'll be doing tonight."
I laughed. "She give an estimate of when she'll be home?"
Before she could answer, the dogs leapt from their observation platform and rushed to the door into the garage. Roni looked at me and smiled. "I'd say that they're home right now!"
I watched as LB and Sherlock skidded to a stop just beyond the door swing and sat down, staring at the door. As I walked over to the door, it swung open and there she was: the bringer of light into my life.
I stood there for a moment, soaking in the vision of her. She looked up at me and smiled. My heart stopped for a moment, like it did every time that Lacey smiled at me.
Her blue eyes sparkled in the light and then she shifted the sleeping baby in her left arm, reaching out to me with her right hand. I just stood there, looking at two of my loves.
Lacey walked to me, and then took my hand in hers. "Breathe, cowboy." She leaned into me, and I wrapped my arms around her, being careful of the baby. I looked down and saw Sam's peaceful face snuggled into Lacey's shoulder.
I smiled again, feeling so much better. "Duncan?" I whispered into Lacey's hair.
"Cathy's getting him." She giggled as she buried her face into my chest. "I think she's in love with him."
"Oh?"
"Yes. She's really attached to him."
I grinned as Cathy walked inside, holding Duncan. She was cuddling him close as Roni and Miriam went past them into the garage. "I see what you mean, love." I put my lips back on the top of Lacey's head to hide that grin. I didn't want to startle Cathy.
As she walked by, she gave me an uneasy smile. "I'm going to take him upstairs and put him to bed."
"Wait a moment, Cathy." She looked at me. "Let the pups have a chance to welcome him home." I kissed Lacey again. "You'll need to do the same."
When Lacey stepped away, she giggled, since both dogs were alert, ears up, eyes wide open as they stared at the babies. "I see what you mean."
She knelt down, as did Cathy. "Easy, you two," Lacey said to them softly. "The babies are sleeping." With that she shifted so that first LB, then Sherlock, were able to softly smell Sam, then they did the same thing with Duncan. They were so gentle, despite their excitement, that neither of the babies did more than stir.
I reached both hands down, so Lacey and Cathy took one each as they stood, using me to balance themselves. When they both headed for the stairs, the dogs were close behind.
I walked towards the garage door, intending to help Miriam and Roni, but they both came through that door holding bags. "Is that everything?"
They nodded, then Roni handed me a couple of them. As they walked away, I pushed the door closed and followed them. I smiled as I walked, knowing that my family was back together.
Once up the stairs, I went into the bedroom and found Roni and Miriam just setting their loads onto the floor. "Lacey said to just set them out of the way," said Roni with a smile.
I nodded and looked towards the babies' room. Miriam smiled as I sat down the bags, next to the others. "Go ahead, Wyatt. Go be with your loves."
I walked to the door, and looked in. I saw that Duncan was already in his crib, while Lacey was gently laying Samantha into hers. I watched, saying nothing, just watched. Cathy looked up and saw me, giving me a small smile.
I think Lacey saw that smile, because as soon as Sam was fully in her crib, she turned and gave me that smile that brightened my life, no matter how often she gave it to me. She stepped close to me, and I simply took her into my arms.
She snuggled her face into my chest and sighed. Cathy walked past us and caressed Lacey's back as she passed. When she had left the room, I simply pulled Lacey even closer to me.
We stood there, just holding each other, listening to our babies' gentle breathing.
"How long have I been gone?" Lacey asked.
"Three and half days." I kissed the top of her head again. "Forever."
"Forever?"
"It seemed that, even with Miriam and Roni here."
"Really?"
"They're wonderful and having them here helped me." I snickered. "But they're not you, holder of my heart."
"I love hearing you talk like that," Lacey said softly.
"I love talking like that to you. I always will."
"Kiss me, Wyatt. Please?"
I looked down at her as she tilted her face towards me. Her lips were ready, and I put mine on them. She melted into me, and I reveled in the sensations of our kiss. I don't know how long we stood there, kissing, but I did feel a tap on my shoulder at some point. When I broke the kiss, I turned my head to see Miriam standing there.
"What's up, Mir?" Lacey asked.
"I have the duty tonight, guys. If you'll go make out in your own room, I settle in and keep an eye on them." Miriam patted my butt, then leaned in and gave Lacey a kiss. "Cathy's going to go to bed, and Roni is going to cuddle with her."
I nodded, and when Lacey took my hand to lead me into our room, I followed willingly. We walked to the bed, where Lacey stopped me at the foot of it, before walking to the head of the bed. She turned to look at me and gave me that wicked smile of hers. Pointing a finger at me, she winked and then reached down to her waist, pulling her shirt up over her head.
