Hello, LATL fans. I am going to skip forward a little for this chapter. I need to so I can begin wrapping up. I hope you enjoyed Chapter 74. Yes, I know it was long, but I couldn't find a good place to split it.
I think four more chapters to wrap up the series. I will jump forward in time some as it goes. I am not saying there will never be more. I just can't write them fast enough anymore, to be fair to those following the series. These last chapters are going to be more about fun and wrapping things up. I think you will enjoy them. I will take a break from LATL and work on the prequel I began a few years back. I won't start posting the prequel until I have a good start on it. Copyright LATL April 2022. A side note -- Sorry this has taken so long, but this damn arthritis is beginning to get in my hands. If it doesn't back off soon, I may have to wrap things up even quicker. I had to leave some out of this chapter because of it.
Life after the Lottery, Ch. 75
It's time
It is now the end of March. All of us, except Amy, had been to four ground school classes on Sundays and were studying hard to get our helicopter license. Samantha was a wiz at it, which didn't surprise Dawn or me. Dawn and I hoped to be ready for the test in a few weeks.
I had been outside most of the week working on a project for Dawn. I went into the house about sunset Thursday. Dawn was in the kitchen with Amy.
"Okay...I have gathered and piled wood for two days for your big ass fire," I said.
"Thank you, honey," Dawn replied.
"What's next?" I asked.
"That should do it. Just hope it doesn't rain tomorrow night."
Dawn had let me know on Monday that she needed a big bonfire for a ceremony Friday night before we all had sex. I had gathered dead tree limbs and wood and made a huge pile down near our little lake. Linda and Rachel would be here for the weekend, so I could enjoy getting everyone pregnant. Dawn had bugged me all month about making sure I was wearing the Ancient stone. For the last several weeks, she had been reading her old books all day long. I knew she was seeking guidance.
"It's not supposed, to rain," I replied. "It wouldn't dare..."
"What do we need for tomorrow night?" Amy asked.
"Just the ceremonial tunics that were shipped to us," Dawn replied.
"Is James going to be naked!" Amy exclaimed and laughed.
"No, he has ceremonial leathers," Dawn replied. "Get them out, honey."
"I will..."
Dawn had been making preparations all week for her ceremony. Whatever she was planning was a big deal.
I went upstairs and pulled out the ceremonial leathers that were made for me when we were married on the reservation. That had been the only time I had worn them. Looking at them brought back memories. I remembered the first time I had met her great-grandparents. Dawn had wanted me to meet them because she felt like we had some past relationship. Little did we know where that would lead us recently.
I lay them out on the bed and brushed the wrinkles out of them. When I had asked Dawn to marry me, she asked if we could get married on the reservation in a traditional ceremony. I had agreed to it. My family hadn't argued about it and were glad to join us for the week of celebration. My family and friends and Dawn's friends from school had driven in for the ceremony. It had been a wonderful week.
"I haven't seen those," Amy said as she came into the bedroom.
"These I wore when we were married on the reservation. After we told her great-grandparents we were getting married, they were made for me."
"Was it Dawn's idea to be married on the reservation or her great-grandparent's?"
"It was Dawn's. I agreed because I had learned how important Dawn was to the tribe and how important they were to her."
"You'll have to tell me all bout it one day," Amy said as she sat on the edge of the bed.
"Amy, honey...are we doing the right thing?"
"You mean all of us getting pregnant?"
"Yes. I am wondering about you and your sister."
"Why?"
"I just...tell me you two are not just caught up in all of Dawn's...what she wants to do."
"James...you can be an ass sometimes. Don't you think sis and I can think for ourselves?
"Yes, honey, I do. I just wonder about the timing. You are in school...Sam is about to start many years of school...and Dawn..."
"Just stop a minute. Dawn is very sure of what she wants for you two. I think all this has even been a surprise to her, and you know she doesn't ever get surprised by things. This is something that she is supposed to do, and so are you."
"For us...maybe. What about you two?"
"Are we really your wives, James?"
"Of course!"
"Then why are you questioning this? Dawn having a child...you two having a child...it is a wonderful thing for the two of you and for sis and me."
"I just wonder about what will change."
"Why are you worried about change, James? Are you worried that children will change your life? Of course, they will. What are you really worried about?"
"I am just worried about you and your sister."
"Are you wondering if sis and I are ready for this?"
"I guess?"
"Are you ready for this?"
"I guess."
"No, you're not, James. No one can be truly prepared for what having children will mean. Are you wondering about how it will change your life? Because it will."
"What about you and your sister?"
"Honey, we have told you about our family...or our mom. You know that we feel like she is the only person that loved us growing up. I got out as soon as I could...looking for a better life. Samantha had to stay, even though I tried to get her to leave and live with me. Sis is such a different person. She gave our dad every chance she could. After I met you and Dawn, I finally began to feel love and what being loved meant. Sis...she knew from the beginning when she met you and Dawn. James...we finally feel loved, and we finally know what it means to love someone other than each other and our mom. It was such a surprise to us when Dawn brought this up with Linda and Rachel. We really had been thinking about it between us. Sis had thought that me doing it was a great idea."
"But, Amy, she is so young."
"She is, but she is about to undertake eight to ten more years of school and training. If she waits...she may be in her thirties. It is something she would not have considered unless..."
"Unless what, Amy?"
"Unless...unless...you...us...were in a position to make it a possibility...financially. Not just because you have money...I mean that you...or us, can provide for children and make having help to raise them a reality. And make it possible for us to have children without the worry of not being able to provide proper childcare. I don't want to say we decided to do it because of money...that is not it. We just know that we did without as we grew up and that kind of life is not fair to a child. Does that make sense?"
"Of course, it does, honey. I guess we all want to be able to provide our children a better life than we had."
"I think you and Dawn had a good life growing up. You don't think that way, do you?"
"No...not in that way. Dawn had an incredible life growing up. She wouldn't have traded living on the reservation in the summers for anything. I never wanted for anything, no one in my family did, but I am looking forward to our children being able to do anything they please in life. All of us being able to provide any education they desire...any opportunities."
"Would you be okay with them living on the reservation in the summers like Dawn did?" Amy asked.
"Of course. That was such a close thing Dawn had with her grandmother and great-grandparents. I am not sure how much longer they will be around, but there are others."
"James...what if it came to be that Dawn spent summers on the reservation...if her great-grandparents were no longer around?"
"Hmmm...hadn't thought of that. That would be something she would be in a position to do if she wants," I said.
"Then what are you worried about?"
"I don't know. I guess I worry that I may not be able to teach three children all they need to know."
"Five."
"Five, I guess. I don't know how much I will be involved with Linda and Rachel."
"I think you better plan on being very involved from what they have said."
"Are you okay with that?" I asked.
"Are you asking me if I am jealous of Linda and Rachel?"
"No..."
"Yes, you are."
"Amy, things have changed so fast over the last year or so..."
"I don't know if I would call it a change. Talking to Dawn and learning from her...I think this last year has been a point in time that we all were heading toward and never knew it."
"Don't you start with that too."
"What else would you call it then? Add things up. Linda met you two, and it has made so much difference in her life. You both helped her learn and move forward out of a bad situation. I met you two at the correct moment in my life. I was in conflict as to where I was heading. You know I was having terrible issues with trust and love. Dawn has reached a major milestone that I think she was telling herself she would never be ready for. My sister found love and meaning that she was desperate for too. Even Rachel has benefitted from all that has happened. If you sit back and just think about everything, it just seems to be something that may have been destined to come together."
