28. Hobbling Along

"I am going to kill that little son of a bitch. I have to wear these braces on both knees, and use crutches for how long?"

"Monty, I believe that little son of a bitch has proven to you that you are not going to kill him anytime soon. Unless, of course, you're going to beat him over the head with a turkey, stab him with a knife, or do what he wanted to do, which was step outside without a spacesuit. Since you are going to be on crutches for at least three weeks, and in those braces for probably four to six months, if not longer, I would leave that 20-year-old kid alone."

"You forgot one thing Finch, I can hit him with one of my crutches."

"That would be your first offensive action, because you didn't get one in, during the match between the two of you."

Hannah said I had to be awake during the entire operation, which is something you failed to tell me. If you want me to be awake, you better let me sleep."

"Payne is staying in the nursery tonight. I promise he will be asleep by midnight."

"Is that asleep, or unconscious?"

"Doc leave those two alone. From long experience, I know you will not win."

"Nurses, if you will assist Senior Captain Jamison by teaching her how to use her new crutches, and adjust to the feeling of her new knee braces for the next few hours, it will be very beneficial. It will be the beginning of her rehabilitation process, which she will go through, for 2 hours, every day, for the next six weeks."

"Captain Jamison, you are off duty for the next two weeks."

"Don't you dare tell me that; I will go stir crazy."

"Captain, here are your pain pills. You will take one every four hours, or six times a day. Trust me when I tell you that you are going to need them. That boy stretched your hamstrings and ligaments far beyond their capabilities. Be thankful he didn't take you all the way to the ground. If he did, you would never walk again."

"He could have done more damage than he did?"

"He stopped putting pressure on your legs three quarters the way down. You are a very big woman, and he knew that. I guess he loves you too."

"He has a heart as big as his father's. If you dare tell him that, I'll rip yours out of your chest."

"Message received Captain. Nurses you may spread that statement all over the ship."

"If you do, you are all going to be flat-chested."

Hannah asked, "Doctor Finch, how many times is she allowed to fall?"

"As many as necessary to bring her to heel."

"Finch, you are a dead man."

"Monty, the whole ship knows you are a pussycat, especially when it comes to Gordon. Now that he's beaten you publicly, you can't even threaten him anymore either. Steer the ship, keep the peace, and get us to where we're going. That's your job now."

"Yes Doctor, I knew that immediately after Jennifer said the words 'Senior Captain Montgomery Jamison. I wasn't sure if I wanted to scream in victory, or hide in a corner. I've always wanted to be a leader, and now that I am, I am frightened to death."

"There's nothing to be frightened about. Everyone on the bridge crew knows where we are supposed to go. All of you have to develop a plan of action, to find out exactly where we are, how we got here, and from here; how do we get there. The smartest people we have are on the bridge. Listen to their wisdom, and make the best choice. We will get to, whatever the name of that planet is, because Little Red said so. It's exactly what Even said about the White Hole. 'If we weren't supposed to go there, Teddy wouldn't be with us.' You can't get better advice than that."

"Thanks Doc, I think I'll go to work now."

"Hannah, baseball bat."

"I was just kidding Doctor. I don't know if I can walk 2 feet yet. Go find Sandy, and make her happy. The nurses can take care of me."

"Talk about excellent advice; I'll take yours Monty. Hannah, when she's finished, she goes straight to her room and make sure she takes a pain pill."

"Naturally Joseph."

"Did you hear her? She called me by my name. You will all get a raise if you agree with me. Raise your hand if you heard her call me Joseph."

"We didn't hear her say a thing Doctor."

As soon as Doctor Finch left, Monty asked, "Didn't you say his name?"

"It's a long story Monty, I'll tell it to you, while we walk. Shall we discuss your sex life while we're walking?"

"How far out of your ass do you want your head sticking?"

"It was just a thought. Elizabeth has someone with his eye on her, and I'm trying to open her eyes to the possibility. Certain older, eligible, male members of this crew have expressed an interest in the Senior Captain of this vessel. I was only investigating the possibility of a romantic entanglement."

"Hannah go fuck your husband, and leave everyone else alone."

"You just told Joe to go fuck Sandy. Why can't I tell you to go fuck Tom, Dick, or Harry?"

"Who the hell are they?"

"They are fictitious male names Monty. However, if you're interested I can set you up on a real date anytime you want."

"I can't believe there's someone out there who would be interested in dating me."

"Why, we all have our imperfections. None of us are perfect. You are a brilliant woman. You are the Senior Captain of this ship, and you are built like a brick wall. You can be guaranteed any man who wishes to date you will treat you with all the respect you would require."

"I've intimidated every man that's came near me for 18 years. I learned, from the time I was a very young girl, I had to protect myself, because not even my father would protect me.

I killed the bastard that did that to me, and no one could prove I did it. When my father looked me in the eye, he knew I did it. He also knew if he said one word he would be next. I don't know why I'm talking about it now, because I never told this story to anyone before. It could be that we are so far away from Earth, I don't believe any jury is ever going to hear me confess to that crime."

Hannah put her arms around Monty, and asked, "How young were you when you were raped?"

"I was nearly 12. My father was a Major, and his CO did it. He raped me in our home and my father watched it happen. I slit the bastard throat in his quarters, with a single edge razor blade, while he was preparing to do it to me again.

"That will be coming much sooner than you think. The Doc has been testing me and I am doing very well. We are going slow, because we have to work all day, but I am going to make it. He knows it, but more importantly, I know it.

Jack has been on a sex diet for nearly ten days, and he is getting grumpy. After listening to Zoey, I am going to give him a present tonight, instead of studying."

"If things were reversed, so would Zoey."

"That child's furnace is on full blast. Thank goodness Gordon is young, otherwise she would kill him."

"She nearly did the week before he went into stasis."

"Yes, I remember Laura had to put a stop to it, so she could get the correct readings on his vital signs. We have some very interesting interpersonal relationships going on in this craft of ours."

"We certainly do. We've been in space nearly 15 months, and we've been through everything life normally throws a group of people like us. Births, love, hate, marriages, and death. We've had our dramas, and our laughs. Now, supposedly, we are trying to find our way to a new home. I guess we'll see what the future brings."

"Only God knows Monty."

"Yes, and she gives hints to Teddy."

"You have to love that little redhead; she gets into more mischief than any child her age."

"Have you noticed how clean the language is on our ship? There is no sailor talk anymore. Teddy is a one-person destroyer. If you say a bad word she is in your face. She tells you God is angry with you, and to pray for forgiveness. The little chapel Even designed, and helped build, has been very busy because of that little cherub."

"On the bridge yesterday, Delicious and Gordon got into an argument. Apparently Gordon said something to her mother, and Delicious was about to explode into a rage.

Teddy saw it coming, and she didn't want her mother to say any bad words. She jumped and landed on her toes. Delicious was in such pain she screamed, fell to the floor, and grabbed her feet. Teddy put her tiny hand over her mother's mouth, and ordered her not to say any bad words. She apologized for jumping on her feet, but it was the only way she could think of to distract her. That child is amazing."

"Many of the children her age are emulating her behavior. It's a delight to see three-year-olds walking around, and acting like tiny adults on Earth."

"Okay Monty, you have used your delaying tactics long enough. Get off your a-s-s, and onto your crutches. Your rehabilitation program has started."

"I know this is going to hurt like F###!"

"You see the results of the Teddy effect? It's not fun, or appropriate all the time."

"Shut up and help me down."

"Put all your weight on the crutches, not on your knees.

Okay, you are vertical. Keep your feet flat on the floor, with your knees locked."

"Why did I have to train that shrimp so well?"

"Because you don't know any other way."

"Move your crutches forward, and leaving your right leg locked, take a small step forward, flexing your knee, with your left until it is even with the crutch; then repeat it with your right leg.

Very good, how did that feel?"

"It felt good. There was very little pain."

"No pain at all. It's probably the knee braces."

"Put the crutches on the outside of your arms, and hold on to them as if they were canes. Then take steps one at a time, and see what happens."

Monty reversed the crutches, and tested her leg strength. She felt very confident she could walk with either canes, or unassisted, because she did not felt pain on her first two attempts. She set herself up, told Hannah she was ready, and the nurses took their positions to catch her if she lost her balance.

"Here goes nothing."

That's exactly what went. Monty took six steps aided by the canes/crutches. She smiled because she still had no pain in her knees. She twisted her body to tell Hannah how good she felt, and fell like a stone.

With eight faces looking down at her, Monty said, "Apparently, my knees are okay as long as I walk in a straight line. However, any attempt at turning is to be discouraged."

Hannah asked, "What did you feel when you twisted your body?"

"Nothing, my knees just collapsed. I didn't feel any pain, although that may come later as I put more stress on the hamstrings, and tendons. They just disappeared, and I went to the floor."

"We are going to have to do a nerve study to see if there's any damage to them. You should have felt some discomfort or outright pain when you fell to the floor."

"My ass hurts."

"3 feet lower Monty. I will kick your ass, but I have to test your knees."

"You need to get laid again Hannah. You're getting too serious."

"Jack and I don't get off for another three hours. Then we have dinner, one hour of delightful conversation, six hours of sex, and then we go to sleep. Our lives are strictly regimented."

"You had the nerve to talk about Zoey and Gordon, plus the goings-on with Newton and Elizabeth. How many of you young ladies have six hours of sex every evening?"

Joanne Cushing said, "My husband has been assigned the Junior Telemetry officer. Even though he has two PhD's, in Celestial Mechanics, the big names won't let him near the radar imaging readouts, or the infrared pictures taken by our telescopes. They stuck him in a meaningless job for a man of his qualifications. They laugh at him behind his back, because they have free access to everything, and they are keeping him in the dark about what they are seeing.

They know I work from 0600 hours to 1400 hours. They purposely make him work from 1800 hours to 0400 hours. We never have a chance to see each other."

"Why hasn't he complained about the situation?"

"It's just not done in academia."

"Where is your husband now?"

"He's probably sleeping."

"While I am comfortably laying on the floor, do you think you could call him and get him down here?"

"I certainly can Senior Captain."

As Joanne ran back to the infirmary Monty said, "I think this is going to be the first time I like that title. By the way, what's his first name?"

"Harvey, Harvey Cushing, and he is a wonderful young man."

"The way Even Luck went through the vetting process for everyone on board this vessel, I believe you could say that about everyone. I'm surprised there are scientists on board that think they are above everyone else. I will take care of them personally. Can I get up now?"

Hannah asked, "I don't know, can you?"
