Schedules and commitments kept Darrell and Katherine apart for two days. On day three, they met on campus on the lawn outside the cafeteria. He was sitting on the lawn when she walked up and sat down next to him, about as close as she could be. Turning his head toward her, she grabbed his face and kissed him.
"Good to see you too," he said.
"I thought I'd get that out of the way. The other night was definitely not a one-night stand. Despite what I said about not wanting you to derail my plans, I'm also not going to pass on a good thing. But, my plans have not and are not going to change. What about you?"
"Well... okay. Thanks for getting that out of the way. I assume then that we are on for a third date."
"Good assumption, bucko."
"And your thoughts on the other night now that we've had a couple of days to think about it."
"Not much has changed from our conversation afterward. The sex was really indescribable, and it was definitely more than just physical contact. It seemed like our energies merged or something like that. I really hadn't expected something like that to really happen. The flip side is that it kinda scares me. It was like tripping on some really good drug. I want to do it again, but I don't want to become addicted. There might be side effects."
"Yeah. I know what you mean, and also, if we made a habit out of it, I think it would lose some of its magic."
"Magic? It was a bit like one of my people's ceremonies."
"Perhaps we do it every full moon or something."
"Darrell, don't forget I'm going back to New Mexico for the summer. We only have a few more weeks."
"Okay. At least once more before you leave."
"Sure," she said, "and then again at the beginning of the winter semester if nothing weird happens. Maybe my grandmother will have a suggestion we can use to enhance our ceremony."
"It's going to be a long summer," he lamented.
"Don't say that; you don't want to be too attached to me. If I'm not around, or even if I am, don't let that keep you from other girls. Like I said, we're not in this for a long-term relationship. If you passed on your perfect match because of me, that would suck, and I would feel terrible. Actually, forget the fall. If it happens, it happens, but we're only going to plan a week or two ahead. That's our future. Okay?"
"Okay, I get what you are saying, but it's a little depressing." And a bit harsh, he thought
"No. Nothing about us is depressing. For the next two weeks, we are going to have fun, and then the couple weeks after that, we take those at a time. You work tonight?"
"No," he said, "only on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights."
