The next warm day, after talking with the sunning Meredith, he coerced himself into testing the agreement he had with her. Getting naked in the yard was not as easy as he thought it would be. Despite all his talk, he hesitated, needing to convince himself that it was okay to be in the yard as naked as the birds and squirrels. Finally, he opened the door and stepped out into the morning sunshine. After five minutes, there was no going back. Comfortable or not, it felt too good.
He began to spend his time between classes naked in the yard studying and exercising. The freedom was refreshing; he worked up a sweat when exercising, and the dry air evaporated the moisture that seeped from him. Without clothes, he got the maximum cooling effect. However, he wasn't entirely comfortable, expecting Ryan or Meredith might still disapprove of his nudity.
Still, he was glad he approached Meredith even though her response had been curious. Each time he stepped out of the cottage, he thought he might see her in the lounge chair without her bikini, but she had not made another appearance, clothed or unclothed.
A few days passed, and neither of the Andersons had been home during the day. On Saturday, when they were likely home, he went to the store and got seeds for the garden. Any hesitancy he had about being naked in the yard disappeared. When he came home, he found Meredith lying in the sun, this time nude, the term she preferred. After shedding his clothes, he waved at her and prepared to work on the garden bed. Just then, Ryan joined her, also naked. He was a bit pale and pudgy but not in bad shape for a middle-aged man.
He collected his gloves from inside the cottage, found a spade in the little garden shed, and tilled the dark garden soil under Meredith and Ryan's watchful eyes. He was on his knees, laying out his seed rows, when he looked up and saw a nude Meredith walking over with a clear plastic tumbler of what he assumed was lemonade.
"Want a margarita?" she asked, handing it down to him.
"Um, yeah, sure. That would be wonderful. Thanks."
"Thanks for doing this. We've been watching you hard at work. If you need anything, just holler. And just bring the glass to the patio when you're done."
"Will do."
"What are you going to plant?"
"Lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, onions, maybe some other leafy greens. That's about all there's room for."
"If you want to expand the garden, we should talk."
"Thanks. I'd like to grow more things, but that would take quite a bit of work. I might have a difficult time fitting it into my schedule, but let me think about it."
"Maybe I could help you."
"Hmm, very tempting. Naked?" he asked, trying to sound hopeful.
"Ahhh, probably not. Well, maybe possibly, with a few drinks in me. But I might make a mess of the seed rows."
"Still, an expansion is tempting. Maybe once classes are over, there will be time to get a few more things in the ground."
"Let me know," she said casually.
"Given any more thought to naked croquet?" he asked. "I assume the match would require margaritas, maybe shots every time someone sent you."
Coming down to his level, sitting on her ankles, she said, "I've thought about it some. It sounds like fun, but you'd be in trouble. I'm actually pretty good at that game, but I'm not quite there with the nudity thing yet. So, why did this nudism thing stick so easily to you anyhow?"
The change in subject disappointed him, but he went along with it and said, "Thanks to that yard work job I had last summer, I discovered that it just feels good to be naked outside or wherever, and now I look for textile-free opportunities where I can find them. Part of the attraction is also that I got into holistic health, which goes well with spending time outside naked--sorry, nude. Hmm...actually naked might be a better term. It's a mental thing as well as physical. Anyway, I have also always been a big hiker, which goes well with the geology degree I'm working on. By the time hunting season was upon us last fall, I had started feeling that being naked in the wilderness was part of my spiritual path, and I often looked for places to hike, run, or just meditate naked. Being clad in textile while exploring nature just doesn't feel right anymore--not if I'm trying to be one with Mother Earth."
