The path through the forbidden jungle was clearly defined, Ardos laughed to himself, some forbidden jungle indeed. The 3rd prince to the Pharoah, Ardos knew he would never be Pharoah and to avoid being killed in some ritualistic culling of younger male siblings , he had chosen to follow the path into priesthood.
The initial tasks and tests had been simple, as Ardos had had the training as being in line for the Pharoah and a royal. As the deeper he got into the mysticism he learned there was a fine line between success and failure, which would lead to death anyway.
His oldest brother Abaco supported Ardos' path fully, they had had a decent relationship growing up, something the second brother Ammon was jealous of, the two younger brothers had never gotten along.
Ammon didn't even show up for the final day when Ardos would be initiated claiming he was ill, but Abaco was there to wish his little brother well. Having a brother in the priesthood would work to Abaco's advantage, the eldest brother recognized the value of family in the temple.
Now Ardos was in a loincloth and a heavy helmet, running thru the forbidden jungle as a final test of being a priest for Chidros God of Water. The run was forced as he had to return before night fell, as no one ever returned from the forbidden jungle after the last gleaming of the sun God.
Ardos in truth didn't believe in any God's or gods, men were the ones with power in this world, despite the admonishments of his mother and grandmother.
He heard the chanting of the crowd and through the bushes and tree cover he saw a thinning of the brush, the young prince was making record time! It was then he tripped, he had been warned to watch the trail, it was simply a tree root he told himself and he got up, only for the ground to seemingly shift beneath him, causing him to fall over and off of the path.
Getting to his feet was difficult, but Ardos was able to brush his arms and legs off, his body was wet and dirty from his bare chest to feet. His very first step toward the path met a leaf covered hole and before he could even shout in surprise he slid down, the jungle disappearing in a flash.
The young prince shook his head to clear the cobwebs from his fall. His instinct to look up proved his fears, he was in a deep hole, perhaps even an old well, there was water all around him, though only a few inches deep.
Taking a deep breath to calm himself as he had been schooled, he looked around seeing there was a hole large enough to be a passage out, he nodded confidently and finally pushed himself to his feet. Putting his helmet straight on his head he began to explore his way, having to hunch over a few times.
