The next day was spent at a family get-together in honor of his grandparent's 55th anniversary. It was nice to see everyone and to catch up some, but pretty much the day was dull. There was one highlight though; Charlie's twenty-one year old cousin Frank showed up with his new girlfriend Vanessa. She would have been a highlight at any party! Three weeks ago it would not have occurred to him to talk to a woman like her. Now? He laughed at himself for thinking, "Where is my mind going these days?" As he laid his head down on the pillow that night, there were two thoughts playing in his head. The first was "Why would a twenty something woman want to talk to a high school nerd?" The second one was, "Maybe I need to do a little more 'research!' and adjust my 'game plans.'" Impossible challenges didn't seem so impossible these days!
Upon arrival at his fourth period class on Monday, his seat was waiting for him. "Good morning, Carrie!"
"Hi Charlie! How was your weekend?"
"Awesome, it started off with a bang and finished at my grandma's house!"
She caught the initial pun and grinned, "Oh my God, that was fun!"
"I put it in the 99.9 percentile!"
"Oh? Not 100%?"
His eyes sparkled at her, "Yeah, later on I realized that there was a thing or two that could have made it better!"
"Oh really? Wanna share?"
"Uhh...sure, maybe I could call you this week?"
"I would like that. Hey, speaking of 'phone calls,' I gave Jenna your number. You'll probably get a text from her soon."
"Okay, great! I wouldn't mind..." Just then Mr. Carpenter started the class. "Okay, we'll talk later."
When he sat down at lunch, Julie didn't even bother to say hello; she immediately asked, "So how did Saturday go?"
"Is there a word in the English language describing something more fun than fun? Funner? Funnest?"
Mark laughed, "This might take some research!"
"Yeah," Charlie replied, "and on top of that, something else happened."
"What?"
"Try not to overreact, okay?"
Julie looked at him, then at Mark, "I don't even know how to take that!"
"It means we have no idea what's coming next, so we need to get a grip!"
She rolled her eyes, "I know what it means, you doofus!" She turned back to Charlie, "Okay, we're ready...shock us!"
"Carrie brought along a friend!"
Mark slapped both hands down on the lunch table and and tried to keep his voice down, "WHAT?"
Julie just sat there; her expression never changed. "Charlie, you know what "holy shit" means?"
He chuckled, "Not literally."
"Well multiply it times ten and that is my reaction!"
Charlie laughed, "You guys handled that pretty well!"
"Good thing you warned us," Mark replied. "So who did she bring?"
"Her best friend Jenna Slater."
"Oh my God," Julie's voice was an octave higher, "I'm almost afraid to ask for details."
Charlie was about to say, "We'll talk later," when two girls stopped at their table. He looked up and said, "Hey! Krista! Hi... Hello Donna! You girls wanna sit down with us?"
"Yes, thanks. Hello Julie, Hi Mark...How ARE you?"
The five of them exchanged a few pleasantries, and Charlie took the opportunity to check out their sorta, kinda, lunch 'guests.' Krista was back to her regular look of jeans and sweatshirt, but she'd done a little more with her hair, and he detected some mascara and lip gloss. He couldn't help but think this break in her routine had something to do with their encounter Friday night. Donna was dressed similarly. Her auburn hair was in its ponytail. Her gray-green eyes and shy smile helped her face; and today, for the first time, Charlie noticed how much bustier she was than Krista (even though "how much bustier" was concealed by the baggy sweatshirt.) Charlie said, "I asked these two to join us cuz Friday night Krista and I talked about throwing a party sometime and changing things up a little. Maybe we could do it for your 19th birthday on November 3, Mark."
"Ohhh," said Julie, "That explains it; I was wondering what you guys were doing out in the back yard." Krista and Charlie exchanged a "knowing" glance. Julie didn't notice so she continued, "What exactly is 'changing things up?'"
"That's what we wanna know; when we have parties, are we gonna keep doing the same thing over and over again? One of the first things we mentioned was dancing."
"Dancing?" Mark interjected, "It's not prom or anything."
"Mark, you're missing my point; we want to blow up the routine!"
Donna spoke up, "I think we're on the right track with the dancing idea. Do we want to hire a D.J. or something?"
"That might be a good idea for the first time we do this," Charlie responded. "But the bigger question is, is there anything we want to try besides the dancing angle?"
"If we really wanna blow things up," said Mark, "then we need to do something really outrageous!"
"Like what?" asked Krista.
"Oh, I don't know; like strip poker maybe?" All three of them stared at Mark; he cracked up, "Oh my God, you should see all your faces! I'm joking you know!"
Charlie said, "Yeah, that would certainly blow the whole routine thing to hell!" This time everyone laughed.
The bell rang and Julie said "Let's sleep on it and meet again tomorrow, discuss a few more ideas. Maybe we'll come up with something a little more reasonable than Mark 'the perv's' idea."
Krista leaned over to Charlie on her left, "Hang with me a second, okay?" When everyone left for their next class, she said to him, "You know, normally I would have thought Mark's idea was stupid; but after Friday, I'm not as sure."
Charlie chuckled, "You want us nerds to play strip poker?"
"No, not that, but I'm wondering if there aren't some fun activities that we could do along more risque lines?"
"Maybe spin-the-bottle?" They both laughed and Charlie added, "Let's do a little on-line research and see what we find, okay?"
"I agree...see ya later!"
That night at 8:30 his phone pinged with a text from Carrie, "Can I call?"
"Yes!"
He picked up on the third ring, "Hi Carrie!"
"Hey Charlie, I wanted to talk to you about Saturday. How did you feel about it?"
"I liked it a lot; it was quite a different experience than just you and me! What did you think?"
"I enjoyed it, there aren't any regrets."
He paused, "Can I tell you what I didn't like as much?"
"For sure, what?"
"When I compare the two Saturdays, it was difficult to share the time between the two of you. I realize I want to pleasure you both and that made it harder, focusing on two people instead of one."
Carrie perked up, "I'm glad to hear you say that; I think the same thing!"
"Did you talk to Jenna about this?"
"I did, she also said the same thing, except she said (and I quote,) 'If we ever do it again, I want to do more with you and me as well.'"
"Oh Wow...she said that huh? Did she mean what I think she means?"
Carrie giggled, "Yeah, she wants to do the whole bi-sexual thing!"
