"I want you to meet my parents," Jon told Stephanie.
They were sitting at a table outside a tiny cafe on a side street in Paris. When they planned the things they'd do that summer, Jon was especially enthusiastic about taking Stephanie to the city that fascinated him more than any other. He'd read about it, but the city remained a mystery to him. Exploring it with Stephanie seemed like the perfect thing to do before they both had to start taking classes in the fall. As they enjoyed the atmosphere in the grand old city, they did their best to avoid thinking about the fact that they were about to spend months apart, studying at colleges on opposite ends of California.
"I'm afraid to meet your parents," Stephanie said. "How many girls have you introduced to them?"
"So far, zero," Jon said. "You'll be the first."
"Really? Jon, you've dated a lot of girls, haven't you?"
"Well, yes. But I think you already know that most of those relationships blew up in my face. You're the first girl I've wanted to take home to Mom and Dad."
"Really?" Stephanie said, smiling. "So in a way, you want to be your first. To give me your virginity?"
Jon chuckled. "That's it exactly."
The waiter returned with a tray of cheeses. Jon couldn't see a reason why Paris should have the finest selection of cheeses found anywhere in the world. But it seemed to be true. He and Stephanie never tired of tasting the diverse offerings of cheese - the French called it "fromage" - that were unlike anything they'd tasted before. They always drank a glass of wine with their cheese; Stephanie felt very grown up and cosmopolitan, enjoying Jon's company in the place widely called "The City of Love."
They were both so young and vigorous that they felt challenged to walk everywhere, exploring popular tourist sites like The Louvre and also finding quaint places unlike anything found in California. They were usually exhausted by the time they returned to their hotel suite late at night, having just enough energy to have sex before falling into a deep, relaxing sleep.
Being near the Eiffel Tower was so exciting that they decided to sit on a bench and just enjoy looking at it for a while. Jon found himself unable to stop thinking about what would happen after they returned home.
"You are going to be very busy at UCLA," he said. "You'll have your classes, and you'll have soccer, and you'll have some of the best social opportunities at any college anywhere."
"I get the feeling that playing soccer is going to take up all my time," Stephanie said. "That school takes their Number One ranking seriously, and they're going to want me to do everything I can to make sure they keep it."
"You'll be traveling a lot," Jon said. "It's not going to be anything like playing against high schools you can get to in some school bus. They're going to fly you all over the place. You'll stay in nice hotels. It will be exciting."
"I hope so," she said.
"What I'm trying to say, Steph, is that I know you have a very exciting four years ahead of you. I enjoyed my undergraduate years, and I went to a college that was a lot less exciting than UCLA. You're going to have a lot of opportunities to do a lot of fun things."
Stephanie sighed loudly. "I know where this is going," she said.
"Where's it going?" Jon said.
"You are about to tell me that you want me to enjoy my college experience as much as possible, and that you expect me to date other men," Stephanie said. "I heard this all before when you told me you wanted me to enjoy my senior year at high school. I thought that made sense for high school, but it doesn't make sense for college. Jon, I'm going to be too damn busy to hang out with a bunch of sweaty boys who look like apes compared with you. My plan is to work hard until Christmas break, then fly home and fuck your brains out. That, and I guess we'll visit your parents."
"Steph, I remember what college was like," Jon said. "It's easy for you to sit here in Paris and say these things, but I can guarantee that a woman as exciting and dynamic as you will find yourself in a lot of tempting situations at UCLA. I want you to know that you should feel our relationship doesn't prevent you from doing anything you want to do."
"Where did you become such a fan of open relationships?" Stephanie said. "I realize that much of what you say makes sense, but your attitude continually surprises me."
"Well, I guess it started with my parents. They have an open marriage."
"What!?"
"It's true," Jon said. "My Dad has a girlfriend. And my Mom has a girlfriend. I thought it was pretty weird when I was a kid, but I can see that it's the only kind of relationship that makes sense for them."
"Your Mom has a girlfriend!?"
"She certainly does," Jon said. "They've been together since I was a little kid. It was a bit of a shock when I discovered they were more than good friends."
"How did you learn that?" Stephanie said.
"When I was in junior high, a big power failure caused school to be canceled unexpectedly. When I got home, I looked out back and saw my Mom and her girlfriend swimming naked in the pool. And by 'swimming,' I mean kissing, hugging, grinding, and all the other fun things girls can do in the water."
"My goodness," Stephanie said. "That must have been a shock."
"You have no idea," Jon said. "I've never met my Dad's girlfriend. He does a better job of keeping that part of his life separate. At one point I realized that part of the reason he travels so much for work is that he takes his girlfriend with him."
Stephanie was quiet. "This explains a lot, Jon Major."
