EAT ICE CREAM AND GET PAID
This was the seventh time in two days Lauren had seen that ad on Instagram. It sounded so stupid she had ignored it, but today while doom scrolling, she accidentally tapped the ad and was greeted with the following message,
Do you like ice cream? Do you like money? If your answer is yes, today is your lucky day! We're paying $$$ to people just like you! All you need to do is answer a few questions, eat a bowl of ice cream and come back the next day to fill out another questionnaire! No catch! If you bring a friend, we'll double the payout! If you refer a friend, we'll send you another payout! Find a time that works for you and apply today!
Lauren raised an eyebrow and giggled. Something written like that
had
to be a scam, but even if it was and she never got the money, it was a free bowl of ice cream. She clicked the
APPLY
button and it took her to a page that had an address in her city with a bunch of different available time slots. She saw there was an opening in a couple hours, so she clicked to reserve the time. She gave them her name and email. Immediately, her phone vibrated and an email arrived.
Thanks for signing up! This is the easiest money you'll ever make! Come, enjoy a bowl of ice cream from us. That's it! Remember, if you bring a friend, we'll double your money!
The email trailed off with information about where the company was located, a bunch of legal text and a link to an FAQ. She knew there had to be a catch, but, at the same time, she could use some extra money and she was hungry. She also knew her friend, Chris, would be up for it, which would double her payout. She sent him a quick text,
Want to head out for ice cream? It's from that ad on Insta that will pay us. I'm heading out for it in a bit over an hour if you want to come.
"YES!!" Chris shouted through the walls. Lauren and Chris lived in a side by side duplex and shared a wall. It was how the two met. They quickly became friends a few years ago when she moved in. The wall between their place was so thin they would shout things to each other on occasion.
lol great. I'll meet you outside in an hour.
Lauren got up, tossed her phone on the bed, stripped off her clothes and got into the shower. She stood under the showerhead and relaxed as the warmth enveloped her. She loved the feeling of hot water washing over her body. She thought about the upcoming ice cream thing and let her mind run away with wild scenarios. Maybe when her and Chris arrived there would be a gang who would steal all their money. Or maybe it was all for a reality show seeing who would click the world's stupidest ad. She shut off the water and went to dry her hair.
She stood in front of the mirror blow drying her hair before putting on any clothes. She thought to herself,
Damn, almost 40 and I still look good.
Lauren kept herself in shape by running three times a week. She was Asian with a slender build and small breasts. Growing up she heard constant, stupid jokes about being in the
Itty Bitty Titty Committee
. Their loss. Her tits were fantastic, even if they were smaller. She walked away from the mirror and put on a knee length, green and black summer dress. It had a V-neck to show what little bit of cleavage she had. She never wore a bra with this dress. She put her shoulder length black hair into a pony tail, slipped on her sandals and went outside to wait for Chris.
She didn't have to wait long for Chris to come out his side of the duplex and give her a wave. He was also in his late 30's with dark hair that he kept short. He hadn't bothered to shave, so he had some stubble on his face. He was wearing gray sweat pants with a tight black t-shirt. Chris didn't work out often, but he kept himself in shape with an active job, and the tight shirt didn't leave much to the imagination with the way it hugged his chest and arms.
"Thanks for the suggestion on trying this ice cream thing. I saw it too, but figured it was a scam. So I ignored it."
"Same, it was an accident that I clicked the ad in the first place. Probably is a scam, but hey, it'll be an adventure."
Chris laughed and asked, "You want to drive or me?"
"You can drive, I'm kind of tired."
"Tired and you can't reach the pedals without sitting on a dictionary, right?"
Lauren flipped him off and they walked to his car. They always teased each other, but it was in good fun. Chris usually made fun of her height, since she was barely five feet. She always teased back that he could claim he was six feet until he was blue in the face, but they both knew he was only five foot, eleven inches. She always joked that his secret was safe with her.
As they pulled out, Lauren asked, "How's Kristal doing?"
Chris smiled, "She's doing really well. She finally has some time off coming up, so she'll be here tomorrow."
Kristal was Chris's long time partner. Lauren didn't know exactly how long they had been together, but they had been dating ever since she knew him. She liked Kristal and the three of them had hung out on a couple occasions. Kristal had no reason to be jealous of Lauren. Lauren and Chris were strictly platonic. Clearly they were both attractive, but neither had any interest in changing the dynamic of their relationship. Besides, Chris was happy with Kristal and Lauren was enjoying the single life, even if it had been some time since her last boyfriend.
They made small talk about each other's week until they arrived at the location, which was a non-descript building that had no markings anywhere on it.
"Are you sure this is the place? Or have you taken me out here to murder me and steal my money?" Chris joked as they got out of the car.
Lauren rolled her eyes "Oh yeah, this was my goal all along. You figured me out! Befriend you years ago, buy ad space on Insta and lure you out to an empty parking lot. All to get your twenty dollars!" She opened her email to make sure she had the right address and sure enough, this was the place. "Come on, let's see if there is anyone in the building. Just so you know, if this is a scam, you're bringing us out for for ice cream on the way home because God damn it, I want ice cream now!"
"Yes Ma'am!" Chris held out his arms. "After you." He followed Lauren into the building. Inside, the building was immaculate. Beautiful hardwood floors with bright white paint on the walls and not a hint of dirt anywhere to be seen.
"I feel like I should take my shoes off so I don't track any dirt in here." Chris mentioned while they continued down the hallway and looked around.
"Tell me about it."
Finally, they rounded a corner and saw a man at a desk typing away. He was so focused on whatever he was typing that he didn't even notice the two of them walk up and he jumped. The sudden jump from the stranger made Lauren jump which made Chris jump. All three laughed.
"Oh my God! I'm so sorry about that! I didn't hear you two at all. My name is Dr. Chen. Usually we have a few more people here, but seeing that you're the last appointment of the day, every one else has gone home. You're Lauren I presume?" He reached out and shook Lauren's hand.
"Yes! The ad mentioned I could bring a friend for extra money, so I did! This is Chris."
The Doctor nodded, let go of Lauren's hand and shook Chris's hand. "Great! Pleasure to meet you two. You can both follow me and I'll explain everything on the way."
Lauren and Chris fell behind Dr. Chen and followed while he spoke. "Thank you so much for coming! I know what you're thinking, this is a scam, right?"
Lauren looked at Chris, raised her eyebrows, smirked and looked back at the Doctor. "Maybe just a little bit."
The Doctor nodded and continued to walk. "Can't say I blame you. I would probably think the same thing if I were you! Honestly, I can't reveal too much as it could taint the results or influence how you feel." The Doctor opened a door and had them take a seat. He pulled out some papers. "What I can say though is that this is pharmaceutical research. We're experimenting with a new drug, but truthfully the taste is awful. We mask the taste with ice cream, and people don't seem to notice."
Lauren looked over at Chris with a shocked look and back at the Doctor. "Wait, so this is what the ad was for? Becoming a medical guinea pig!? This is worse than a scam. This is..."
Before she could finish her sentence the Doctor placed a paper in front of each of them. "Before you leave, please, look at this. It's a quick survey, but if you'll look at the bottom of it, you can see what the pay is."
"Holy fuck." Chris grunted in disbelieve, looked at Lauren and whispered. "This is a lot of money. If you don't want to do it, fine, but I am."
Lauren sighed and looked anxiously at Chris and back to the Doctor. "Before I agree to this, what are the side effects? Anything serious?"
The Doctor let out a hearty laugh. "Nothing serious at all! For what it's worth, and this is the God's honest truth, everyone who has tried it has come back with a friend for the referral bonus and most have asked if it's possible to do it a second time and still get paid. The answer to that question, is of course! Each person is eligible for three visits."
