She wiped her hair out of her face and stretched to work the kinks out of her back, then bent back over her notepad. This case was going to the death of her or it was going to make her partner. The first female partner at William & Bates to be exact. She'd been working for this ever since she completed her law degree. With an exasperated sigh, she threw down her pen and arched her back again. She had to be careful though, her shirt was already tight enough. Hunching over so she didn't "oversexualize" herself in the workplace was part of what was causing the kinks in her back.
Karen had been assigned to this case in a ploy to see if she could handle the pressures that came with being partner. And boy was she feeling it. All she'd done was work, work, work! But after work today, she was heading down to The Downy Pelican to have drinks with Richard, a fellow lawyer, to go over details of this drawn out divorce case. If she was being honest, she would've had drinks with Richard even if they hadn't had a case to discuss. He was by far the sexiest lawyer she'd ever seen. Just looking at him made her flushed and excited. Even now, she could feel her heart rate increasing. Shaking herself from her fantasies, she glanced at her watch. Time to head to the bar.
The Downy Pelican was your typical downtown bar for the business type. Lawyers mostly occupied it although on occasion you'd find the stray out-of-towner. Dark leather, sleek tables, and only the highest quality liquor. Karen sat down at the bar and ordered a gin and tonic. She looked through the file she'd brought with her and waited for Richard to show up. Luckily, she was only a few sips in when he arrived.
"I see you've already started without me," Richard said taking a set next to Karen. She let her eyes roam over his body and felt her pulse quicken. He was a very good looking man, with thick brown hair, strong jaw, and piercing eyes. The suit also helped. He ordered some whiskey and took a sip before turning to her. "So where are we on this case?"
"Well," Karen said taking another sip of her drink, "The clients are obviously at odds with each other. I'm pretty sure our court date is going to be a bloodbath." Richard let out a groan.
"I'm sorry but I'm just so sick of this. We've been working hard trying to appease the couple and it's driving me crazy! I haven't had a relaxing moment in months. To be honest, this drink is the first time I've been able to chill for a bit." Karen quickly closed the file and breathed a sigh of relief.
"I know what you mean. Would you mind if we just took this evening off and enjoy our drinks? We can talk about the case tomorrow over lunch or something." Richard's face broke into a smile. Karen could feel his eyes on her and felt her body warming to his attentions.
