As the Summer Break started, I was back home but it felt like my head and my heart were elsewhere! I began to suspect that the Plan was changing.
Year 2 - The Summer Break
July 1977
Late the next week Mary rang, telling me the date of Jane's results. I told her I'd be down the day before, if that was OK. Mary said it was no problem, in fact it might help calm Jane. And her and Eric too!
"We're planning on taking Jane to the Isle Of Wight as a surprise," said Mary. "Eric said because of all the help you've given Jane, he wondered if you wanted to come with us for the week. If that would be OK with you, of course. Another surprise for Jane, I guess. So, what do you think?"
"Mary, I'm gob-smacked," I replied, "that you even think about inviting me, but absolutely yes. I'd love to."
So the plan was hatched! We wouldn't tell Jane.
Jane and I spoke two, three, sometimes 5 times a week, usually later in the evening, depending on my work hours at the supermarket.
In late July, Jane came to visit me for a weekend. I picked her up on the Friday from Preston station and got a slow bus home. We were like giggly kids. Jane didn't let go of my arm all the way. Introducing her to mum, dad and Annie felt awkward. Everyone was talking at her like she was my girlfriend! Annie took to Jane immediately, maybe like an older sister she'd always wanted. She practically dragged Jane to her room after the evening meal. She was gone for 3/4 hour till mum intervened. Then, there was mum's gentle grilling!! And mum's story of my life!
Groan
Jane loved it, smiling at me often throughout the tale.
Mum said at the end, smiling, "In many of his ways Jon is like his dad. Well, mostly the good bits!"
Dad didn't interrupt mum, he knew better but eventually laid out his plans for our weekend. Saturday was an early start, up to the Lake District, dad's favourite place. Five of us in the car was snug, but Annie sat in between Jane and I. We ended up walking around Eskdale and Wast Water, dad acting as guide and telling Jane all the things he had told Annie and me as kids! For Jane it was all new. A place she'd never been, doing things that 'normal families' do, and being fussed over by mum, dad and Annie. I hardly got a look in.
When we arrived home, quite late, Jane said a big thank you to dad, saying,
"That was a fabulous day out, the best I've ever had, being... being with you all." There was a hint of a quiver in her voice. Mum hugged her.
It had already been decided that Jane would sleep in my room, with me relegated to the downstairs couch. We managed goodnight kisses, that's all. We'd also agreed to pause our 11:30 plan, as I was on the couch! The next day Jane said discreetly that she couldn't resist her 11:30, seeing as she was in my actual bed!! I smiled.
Sunday had us walking again, around Broughton and Mason's Wood. It was quite hot but dad knew all the best pubs, or 'watering holes' as he called them, that were on the route. Jane said at one point, she'd never walked as much in her life!
Though we got back late, dad insisted on making us something to eat. Mum, Annie, Jane and I were in the living room, just chatting idly, when Jane asked mum,
"Mrs Bailey..."
"Whoa!" mum interrupted, "That makes me sound so old, call me Sarah."
"Oh! Sorry. Sarah, Jon told me about your 40th and what his dad said, but I wondered how did you know he was... the one?"
"Good question!" she replied, "I think when you know... you know. Though we knew one another as we'd grown up together in the same street, it was in secondary school I suppose. We were 11 and 12ish. On my way home I got hit by a bike, hurt my leg and twisted my ankle. Harry was right there. He carried my bag, held my arm to support me and got me home. He even came round after tea to check on me. The next morning he called for me, carried my bag again and walked me to school. He did that every day. He was just... kind, caring, considerate, funny and I just felt... well, comfortable and content when we were together. I think I was 17 by the time I realised I loved him and told him. Clever sod said
'I know'
."
"That's lovely," said Jane.
"Never underestimate the simple things like kindness and compassion, humour and not having to speak to fill a silence." mum added.
On the Monday morning at breakfast, Jane said to mum, "Thank you for having me. It was just so lovely to be... be part of a family like yours."
I could sense the nearness of tears in her and I think my mum could too, who said back, "Well anytime you want to come be with us, we'd love to have you. I mean it. After all, you look after my boy for me, so..." Mum hugged her hard. Annie seemed genuinely upset.
Dad, being dad, just kissed her on her forehead and said, "See you again. Soon."
As Jane left on the lunchtime train, there were again some tears, but also smiles and hugs and kisses. We spoke again that night, and resumed our 11:30 pleasures!
Though I wasn't with Jane at the end of July, I later found out that she had also spoken to Eric about love. What follows is something like how that conversation went:
"Grandad, how did you and nan fall in love and how did you know it was love?"
He answered, "It was 1929 when her family moved in next door. Our parents got on well. We walked together to the same school. Gwen easy going, fun to be with and I guess we just grew into one another. You did in those days! We got married the year before the War. She was kind, thoughtful, funny, never really angry... we just fit together. I worked in telecommunications and was sent away around the country on hush-hush work, rather than being called up. So I got home a lot. It was like love at first sight every time I came home! But it was different times, my dear, different times. Your nan will always be the love of my life."
"What about Mary?" Jane asked.
"Oh! My bit on the side!" he joked. "We both missed your nan for different reasons. We also grew together. Just differently. Why do you ask?"
"Just curious, grandad." said Jane!
Jane recounted this to me later.
August 1977
Though we'd spoken on the phone a lot, at the beginning of August Jane rang asking me to come for her results day. When she told me the date, I feigned disappointment saying, "Sorry Jane but I've already made arrangements to go see my best friend. I... I could come at the weekend."
She was obviously disappointed, and I felt such a heel for lying to her!
She replied, "No you can't. Grandad and Mary are taking me away... somewhere."
Again I told a little white lie, "I'll sort something out Jane, I promise. I'll do my best to be there."
So I travelled down on the middle Wednesday in August, the day before her results. Mary had told me in advance the best time to arrive. I got to the house and it was empty so I hurried to put my bag in the bedroom. It was about 30 minutes later, when I'm in the front room and I hear Jane and Mary come in, Jane chattering away. As she passed the living room door she sees me, turns sideways and steps in, a surprised look on her face.
"I thought you couldn't come! You said you were going to see your best friend."
Smiling I replied, "I did say that and I have come... to see my best friend."
The look on Jane's face transformed and she practically leapt across the room, enveloping me in a huge hug then an equally huge kiss. When she finally peeled herself off my lips, I could see the surprised look on Mary's face.
I said, over Jane's shoulder, "I think she's glad to see me!"
"A bit more than glad, I think!" Mary said back, leaving the room for the kitchen.
Jane kissed me hard again before finally letting go and slapping my arm, "That's for not telling me and...and being sneaky and..." another kiss, with a huge smile, "Thank you for coming."
It was an easy evening with Eric and Mary, though they must have realised that Jane seemed to be next to me or snuggling me all evening. At bedtime, we kissed on the landing and Jane whispered, "11:30!"
I winked my OK.
As I climbed into bed, readying myself for 11:30, I swore I could smell Jane's perfume. It somehow made the orgasm more intense, as if she was right there!
The next morning was A Level Results Day. At breakfast, Jane hesitantly asked if I could go with her for the results. Eric and Mary looked at one another, and though I wondered if they were disappointed at Jane's request, they said it was OK, if that's what she wanted. I said we could all go, but Mary said just the two of us should go, but come straight back!
Jane was nothing short of gobsmacked at her results. She got an A and 2 B's. Her form teacher made his way over, to congratulate her, overjoyed at her results, to tell her that he knew there was a clever girl in the somewhere waiting to get out! He even looked at me just before he left, saying, "Well done you."
We raced back to tell Eric and Mary. They were ecstatic for her, huge hugs and kisses all round. Eric said we must celebrate, so we'd go out later. I don't think Jane even considered telling her mum the results!
So at the restaurant Eric had booked for the evening, we had a slap up meal, lots of wine and beer. Eric gave her £100, as a gift for doing so well. Jane was bowled over.
As the meal was ending, Eric asked, "So what time's your train tomorrow?"
Catching the look in his eye, I realised what he was doing, "I haven't actually booked a return yet. I wasn't sure how long I might stay."
"Why don't you come with us?" he asked.
Jane's eyes widened as she looked from her grandad to me and back. "To the Isle of Wight?" she asked. Eric nodded.
"Say YES", Jane looked at me and almost shouted, "Please say yes."
"Errr... " I started.
"Don't you dare say no!" Jane ordered, her face stern.
"Well when you ask so nicely." I replied, which resulted in a swift kiss on my cheek.
