Movie Night
I love Clive and all, but movie nights with him have become rather monotonous lately. We keep watching the same films over and over again and he never seems to get bored or notice that I do. Anyway, he invited me over to meet his new girlfriend, so I ring the bell, and this chick opens the door. I am immediately struck by how pretty she is, like, I don't know how Clive pulled this off.
But then I see she is giving me this ice cold glare like I ruined her life or something. I know I'm probably not the most exciting guy in the world, but you could at least pretend to be pleased to meet me. I'm thinking maybe she's got a headache or something. Or maybe she's just one of those girls who want their boyfriend all to themselves.
"Hey man, what's up?" Clive says, all excited as I step past his glaring girlfriend into the house. He's got this stupid grin on his face like he just won the lottery. Like he couldn't be happier to be spending the night with his two favourite people and he knows his new girlfriend is superhot and he is delighted to be able to show her off.
"This is Kayla," he says.
I take the opportunity to check her out properly. She has beautiful long dark hair framing a cute face with seductive green eyes. She looks stunning in her white summer dress. My eyes take in her well-sized breasts, flat stomach, and wide hips. Kayla has a gorgeous face and an amazing body. She has it all. The works.
Seriously, how did Clive pull this off?
"Hey," she says, disinterestedly.
"Hey," I reply, trying to sound casual, but the situation feels awkward.
Anyway, Clive grabs a six pack of beers from the fridge and we go into the living room and Clive starts rummaging through his DVD collection. Kayla plops down on the couch and crosses her arms. She's giving me the cold shoulder, big time.
"So, what are we watching?" I ask, trying to break the ice.
"Oh, I don't know," Clive says, still digging through his DVDs. "Something classic."
Kayla just rolls her eyes.
Clive pops in one of his favorite 90s action movies, like he always does. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like a good action flick as much as the next guy, but this is the fifth time I've seen Die Hard. I glance over at Kayla, and she just looks frustrated.
Clive plops down on the other side of her, all excited. Kayla just stares at the TV, like she's in a trance. I'm starting to feel bad for her. I mean, she probably had some other plans for the night. Maybe she wanted to cuddle or something. I don't know. She's impossible to read.
Clive cracks open a beer and hands it to me. I take a large gulp. Maybe this will help me forget I'm the third wheel in my best friend's relationship. But even after two beers, it's pretty obvious. We're halfway through the movie when Kayla starts nibbling at Clive's earlobe. She clearly wants to make out but he is just not interested. He's busy repeating his favourite lines from the movie.
Kayla gives up on seducing her boyfriend but now she's glaring at me like I am to blame and it just makes her look even hotter. I take another swig of beer, trying to ignore the tension in the room. I'm starting to think that maybe I should just make an excuse to leave. Like, my cat's on fire or something. But cat's don't spontaneously combust.
As soon as the movie ends, I get ready to make my escape. But Clive, bless his heart, is already hitting play on another DVD. An early 2000s rom-com. I groan inwardly. I'm pretty sure I've seen this one too. He must be trying to win Kayla over or something. The beers are finished so Clive fetches some whiskey from the liquor cabinet and pours us all another round of drinks and we settle back into the couch.
The second movie is way more audience appropriate and Kayla seems to be enjoying herself. She is laughing at the gags and has a big smile plastered on her face. I'm enjoying myself too, and I feel more comfortable now that she doesn't seem so pissed off. But Clive's eyes look as though they are getting heavy and he'd clearly running out of steam.
About halfway through, I notice Clive's head start to nod. Then his chin hits his chest. He's out like a light. I can't help but laugh. Kayla looks at me, and for the first time, there seems to be an understanding between us. We exchange a look like we both get how ridiculous Clive is and it's like we're bonding without having to say a word.
Kayla gets up and comes over to my side of the couch. She is moving slowly and quietly so as not to wake her sleeping boyfriend. I feel nervous about what is happening and it is heightening my senses. Kayla leans in close, and without a warning, she snatches the drink right out of my hand. I'm too surprised to react as she downs the whole thing in one go.
"All I wanted was a nice, quiet night with my boyfriend," she says, her voice low and husky. "But Clive can't take a hint." She pauses, and her eyes flick to me. "Now I'm stuck here with you..."
I don't know how it happened but we start making out.
