The car crawled painfully upward. They'd been on this road for just under an hour. The stress of driving a treacherous mountain road was taking it's toll. In the past fifteen minutes the car had lurched fearfully from the smooth, but dangerously twisting asphalt to gravel. The road narrowed. The view was frightening. Occasionally the rear tires would slip kicking gravel into the wheel wells so it clattered against the car's frame.
The car was sturdy so they crept along tense, but with confidence. The road widened. He leaned over. Her body thrilled expecting one of his soft kisses or even a gentle hand exploring her hidden places. "Less than ten minutes according to the Garmin." His hand gripped her thigh briefly before he sat up. Disappointed she said nothing nor did she dare to look over at him. He smiled. She could feel it, but no kiss.
"I think it's just around that corner." He pointed. She nodded relieved that the end of the drive was near.
"You sure all this was necessary?"
"Roddy said it was."
"I guess. And anyway we're almost there."
They rounded the corner at less than twenty-five miles an hour. "There it is." She'd seen it at the same time he had. Both relaxed some from the stress of the drive. "Gate doesn't appear to be locked."
"The maintenance guys probably don't even have a key so they leave it unlocked. Who else would want to come all this way, especially on that road.
She stopped at the gate. He jumped out to open it. She drove through and waited as he closed the gate. She watched in the rear view.
He opened his door. "I closed the lock on the fence. I'd hate for someone just happening along and, seeing the gate unlocked, locked it. It'd be a long walk home."
"Good thinking. You're my hero." She patted his leg as she moved the car forward inching past the muscular steel legs of the tower. Ten feet later she turned into a dusty turn-around area workers had created when the tower was built and nudged the car as far into it as possible. She stretched, then opened her door and slid out. The air was cool and sharp, but barely moving in this secluded area.
They looked at each other across the dusty white roof of the car. She took a deep breath as she checked her watch. Her head came up slowly. A smile formed. Her hair was a mess. Dust from the gravel had filtered through the closed windows and landed on both of them. She unzipped her hodie.
