The Mechanic and The Driver
After a season ending crash, dirt track racer, Jim Drake spent the winter recovering in his home town of Boulder, CO. Jim was on the final lap of the Talladega race, when his open wheel race car - #33 - blew its transmission. Chris, driving #69, rammed into his slowing car, sending Jim's car up and over the barrier. Jim was flown to a local hospital, but had suffered a severe concussion and a broken leg. Over the following 6 months, Jim went through extensive rehabilitation, to include daily physical therapy, weight training and yoga 3 times a week.
One sunny June morning, Jim heard from his doctor - he had been cleared to race again. After reaching out to his team, he was given the news he had been waiting for. He was asked to return to full race status immediately. Jim was elated and couldn't wait to get back in the dirt. He could hardly sleep and stayed up packing all night for his 2 day trip back to Raleigh, NC, where his race team was located. He arrived at the garage a couple days later to a hero's welcome.
Monday morning, they had a drivers meeting to discuss the upcoming race schedule. Unfortunately, Jim was told that he wouldn't be driving for the next 4 races, because they had to submit backup drivers in his absence. Jim was crushed! But that's not all the bad news he got that morning - he was also told the reason for his crash causing failed transmission, was mechanic error. Jim's childhood buddy, Ron the transmission mechanic, was fired due to negligence from his pre race setup.
The following morning, the majority of the race team headed out for their 4 race event on the west coast, leaving Jim back in Raleigh. He thought the best use of his time, would be to settle back into his apartment, find a gym and a yoga studio to continue his rehabilitation. After work Jim grabbed his yoga mat, and headed out to try the new Zen Yoga Studio - just opened a couple miles from the garage. Jim was able to get into the afternoon class; walked in and set up his mat in the back of the class. The class was full of twenty-somethings, as typical with Yoga these days, but there were a couple people Jim's age. Jim wasn't expecting such a popular class, unlike his hometown of Boulder, Raleigh wasn't exactly known as having a
Yoga Community
. He also found a good gym nearby, and signed up for a membership there as well.
He woke up the next day and headed out to Zen Yoga; got setup in the same spot and started his breathing exercises, as the class all settled in. Looking around, he noticed a few people from his class the day before. One in particular, was a tall, thin, beautiful blonde - who setup a few spots over. During the class, he glanced over and noticed that this woman had an amazing presence, great energy and an exceptional practice. After class he decided to try and say hi, but by the time he got out, she was gone. Disappointed he was unable to meet her, he headed home. Later that day, he found himself thinking back about this new girl and was hoping he'd have another opportunity to say hello. Jim decided he was going to go to the same class tomorrow in hopes he'd run into her again.
Jim woke the next morning, excited at the thought that he'd be able to see this new woman in class, and got there a little early. He setup his mat closer to where the woman had hers the day before, in hopes that she'd be there and setup next to him. Jim was again doing his breathing exercises, waiting for the class to settle in, when he looked up to find the beautiful blonde setting her mat up right next to him. They made eye contact and exchanged a smile. She was wearing form fitting pants and a criss cross type yoga bikini top with her long blonde hair pulled tightly into a pony tail. Jim found himself completely losing focus at the thought of which poses would point him in her direction. She had long muscular legs, great hips and a long thin torso. As the class went on, he noticed that her breathing was deep and rhythmic and her movements were very graceful. He was so focused on her, that their breathing began to match, linking their practices and energy to one another.
After the class was over, Jim wasn't going to miss another opportunity to meet this new woman, so he said "Hello." With a warm, welcoming smile, she said "Good morning, I was hoping you'd say hello." Her name was Sinthia, and she had a beautiful smile and chocolate brown eyes. After chatting for a couple minutes, they went about their day. Heading home, Jim had a huge smile on his face, a renewed sense of excitement in his life and seemed to have forgotten about not being with his race team.
The next morning, Jim setup in the same spot, hopeful that he would see Sinthia again. He sat up from doing his breathing exercises, but she wasn't there. He went through his entire class, completely distracted again wondering if he'd ever see her again. Feeling down after class at the thought that he had missed his opportunity to get her number, he packed up and started to leave. On the way out of the building, there she was, walking in the front door with her mat in hand. The locked eyes, exchanged a smile and a "Good Morning". As they passed each other, Jim said, "Have a great practice". Sinthia said, "Thanks...oh, hang on a second..." She walked over to the check-in counter and grabbed a business card, scribbled something down and handed the card to Jim. She quickly turned around saying, "Have a great day."
Jim's heart was racing as he walked out and looked at the card. It said,
Sinthia
with her
phone number
! Jim was elated, but trying to decide when he should call her consumed the rest of his day - not to mention, what he'd say. He hadn't been this excited, since he found out he had been cleared to race again. Somehow, racing was the furthest thing from Jim's mind - he wanted to get to know Sinthia.
Jim woke the next morning with a spring in his step, walking around his house whistling his favorite tune. He couldn't wait for yoga that day so he could see Sinthia again. He got to class an hour early and waited out front, hoping to run into her - but she never showed. For the next couple days, he got to class early, setup in the same spot, but she never showed. He decided to call her, but was unsure what to say. Before he had a chance, he got the call he had been waiting for. It was his race team; it was finally time for him to get back on the track.
They had just finished building a new car, and asked Jim to come in for some testing. He grabbed his bag and headed to the garage. He was so excited to get back in the dirt, but couldn't stop thinking about Sinthia. When he got to the garage, he found a skeleton crew there - because the race team was still on their west coast race trip. They were set to return in a week, so there wasn't much time to get acclimated, after 6 months off the track. Jim walked into the garage to applause from the small crew, and a banner reading
Welcome Back Jim.
Kyle, the home team crew chief, came over to Jim to give him the agenda for the day.
They were going to be running a few laps in the new car to get the suspension and software dialed in. The two of them walked across the immaculate garage floor, to find a spotless new dirt racer on jack stands with a pair of coverall laden legs sticking out from under the car. Jim asked Kyle, "What's the deal, I thought we were ready to roll?" Kyle responded, "We just had a couple of adjustments on the transmission linkage." This was very concerning to Jim, because he knew the cause of his crash was a failed transmission. He said very quietly to Kyle, "How is Ron's replacement working out? Has he gotten everything signed off?" Kyle smiled and said, "Yes, she was first in her class at UTI and had a letter of recommendation from the dean." With a shocked look on his face, Jim said, "SHE?" Just then, Kyle nudged the foot of the legs sticking out from under the car, and she starting rolling out from under the car.
Jim just stood there with a disapproving look on his face. He thought, a female mechanic, seriously?! What are they thinking? Her legs just keep coming out and Jim thought, geez how tall is this girl - her legs go on forever. As she rolled all the way out, their eyes locked onto each other once again. Kyle said, "Jim meet Sinthia, your new transmission mechanic." Both Jim and Sinthia were speechless. All Jim could muster was, "Welcome to the team Sinthia." She responded nervously with a, "Thank you, it's an honor." Kyle pulled Jim away, so they could go over the car setup and agenda for the day, but all Jim could think about was Sinthia.
