She glanced out of the window at the surrounding snow-covered mountain peaks. It was a beautiful sight, and also one she never tired of seeing. The view beckoned her, as it always did, and she knew she needed to be out there. She dressed in appropriate clothes and headed out.
"Where are
you
going?" her sister asked, as if she did not know.
"The mountains are calling!"
Her sister merely shook her head as she watched her twenty-two-year-old older sister leave.
Once outside, she headed for her usual trail that was unknown to most and took her down the mountain past some incredible scenes: ragged snow-covered mountains, icy cold streams, and majestic waterfalls. She walked leisurely enjoying the brisk air on the way down where she connected with the Tour du Mont Blanc trail that led into La Fouly, Switzerland.
Farther along, she encountered a male hiker sitting alone on a fair-sized boulder. He had removed one shoe and sock and seemed to be massaging his ankle. He was very handsome.
"Are you okay?" she asked, sitting beside him, needing a rest herself.
"Yeah. Just stumbled on a rock, twisted my ankle a bit, but I'll be okay. Needed a rest anyway. Wish I could have made it to La Fouly to grab some lunch."
She unzipped her jacket, and he saw that she wore a tight pullover shirt that revealed fair-sized breasts, and her tight pants showed shapely legs. And of course, she was beautiful.
"It's just around the next bend. I was headed there for lunch also," she lied.
"I appreciate you stopping to check on me. If you don't mind me limping the rest of the way, I'd like to buy you lunch. I'm Brian, by the way."
"Mia. And I'm in no hurry."
Brian put his sock and shoe back on, and very slowly, they walked to the nearest cafe in La Fouly.
"Thank you," he said, removing his backpack, setting it down beside the table they found, and finally taking a seat.
"You are hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc?" Mia asked.
"I am. I believe I am just past halfway."
"Yes, that is correct. If you began at Les Houches."
"I did. Are you hiking it, as well?"
"No. Just local trails. Perhaps one day I will do the entire tour."
"So, you live around here?"
"Nearby."
Someone came to take their order. It was pasta for both.
"Is this your first time hiking the TMB?" Mia asked.
"Yes. I've hiked some other trails in the United States, but this is my first time in Europe."
"You are American? What brought you to do this one?"
"Yes." Brian chuckled. "Well, I've heard so much about it. But I also met this old man on the Appalachian Trail in the eastern United States—"
"Yes, I've heard of it."
"Apparently, this old guy had hiked all over the world, including here several times. He told me about a magic kingdom high up in these mountains. It made me want to search for it. Have you heard of it?"
"A
magic kingdom?
Doesn't sound like anything around here."
"It's supposed to be around here."
"Up in the mountains?"
"That's what he said."
"Why is it magic?"
Brian shrugged. "I don't know. That was how he described it."
Mia shrugged. "Good luck in finding it."
Their pasta was served.
"What else is there to do around here?" Brian asked. He noticed again how attractive Mia was. The air was a bit chilly, and her nipples imprinted on her shirt.
"Not much this time of year. There are other trails to hike. During the winter there is skiing. You are hiking alone?"
"Yes. I usually do."
She nodded her understanding. "No girlfriend?"
Brian chuckled, wondering if that question suggested interest. "No. I haven't been able to find a girl who enjoyed hiking."
"I
love
hiking. Is it more important to you than having a girlfriend?" Mia asked. She found him interesting.
"Not necessarily. And
you.
Do you have a boyfriend?"
"No. Like you, I have not found one who could give me . . . what I want."
Intrigued, Brian nodded. "What is it you
want?"
She grinned playfully. "I don't know you well enough to say."
"I wish I knew
you
better. You are very attractive, and you seem very intelligent."
"That is kind of you to say. If you weren't on a quest, perhaps we could get to know each other."
"Really?
You would want to do that?" Brian asked.
"You are handsome and seem very intelligent also. And we both enjoy hiking."
"Well, perhaps I could stay the night here. We could also have dinner and get to know each other better."
"I would like that. Do you have a place to stay?"
"I've camped most of the way, but a comfortable hotel room would be nice for a change."
"That could be difficult. They are small and probably booked solid."
With a grimace, Brian said, "Guess I'll have to camp out, which is what I would have done if I had continued on as planned."
"I have a friend who works at one of the hotels," Mia said. "I'll talk to her and see if maybe she has one left."
"Thank you. I appreciate that. Where do you recommend for dinner?"
"The hotel restaurant, if they have a room. The food is good and it's casual. I wouldn't have time to go home and change."
"Then, there it is. I'll follow you to the hotel."
They finished their lunch, Brian paid, and then, his ankle having improved, Mia led him the short distance to the hotel.
"Wait here," Mia instructed when they were just outside.
Brian did as she said.
He watched from the doorway as Mia talked to another young, attractive woman at the hotel's front desk. They talked for several minutes as though catching up, smiling, and giggling. Finally, he saw the desk clerk hand Mia a key, and with a final smile, Mia turned to where Brian was standing and summoned him with her finger.
As he caught up to Mia, Brian nodded to the desk clerk and handed her his credit card. She had an odd grin on her face as she processed it and then watched him walk away.
It was a small but comfortable room with a large bed and modern bathroom.
"Wow! This is magnificent! I can't wait to take a shower to wash the trail off."
"Do not let me stop you."
"What are you going to . . ."
"I'll wait here for you, if you don't mind. I don't really have anything else to do."
That took Brian by surprise. "Oh. Okay."
There was only a small desk and chair that Mia sat on.
Brian hurried into the bathroom and had a relaxing, cleansing shower, and a shave. He dressed in his only other change of clothes. "I feel like a new person," he said, exiting the bathroom.
"You might even be more handsome now," Mia said with a smile. "The hotel will launder your clothes, if you like."
"That would be wonderful."
It was still early afternoon, so Brian sat on the bed to chat. Mia spoke little about herself, saying only that she grew up in the area and went to college in Switzerland where she studied a wide range of subjects, mostly business and government.
Brian thought that was interesting considering that she lived in a small village, but she merely explained that's what interested her. Mia tactfully steered the conversation around to Brian, and he was only too happy to impress her by talking about himself. He did his best not to sound boastful. He had earned his college degree in finance and was an executive with one of the largest banks in the United States.
It was boring for Mia to listen to, but she let Brian talk because she was taking a liking to him and, next to hiking, he was obviously very enthusiastic about it. But finally, it was time to go to the restaurant for dinner. Brian's ankle was obviously better.
Brian urged Mia to order for them. She started with a French Chardonnay to drink and a traditional Swiss cheese fondue as an appetizer. For their main course, she ordered Cordon Bleu with chicken. Both were too full for dessert, but they did polish off the bottle of wine.
It was approaching dark when they finished.
"May I walk you home?" Brian offered.
"Thank you, but it is dark and too far. I can stay with Sophie tonight—my friend at the hotel. She has a room there."
"Oh. That's good. Can we meet for breakfast in the morning?"
"I will look forward to it."
* * *
"Heidi, where is your sister?"
"She left this morning for a hike."
"She has not returned?"
