Readers,
Many have commented that my ending are too fast.
I tend to not follow the standard endings where every question is answered and the characters ride off into the sunset. I find that unrealistic and instead I write a story that is just a peek at a small section of my character's lives and either leave it up to the reader to continue the story in their own minds or set it up for a part 2 to be written at a future time.
Hope you enjoy this story and as always, the comments and ratings will determine if a part 2 is written or not.

Lunch

June 2022
Bill opened the door, stepped inside and approached the counter as he had every day for the last several months. He paid his seven dollars and received his ticket; he knew of no other place where seven dollars would get him what he needed. He found an unoccupied table, left his ticket on the table and went to grab a plate.
Bill had been coming to this buffet ever since he discovered it. Nowhere else could a senior get an all you can eat lunch for only seven dollars. The food had little flavor, but it was soft for those who no longer sported a full mouth of teeth. There were mostly singles here, but occasionally there would be a couple, but if there were two people at a table, they were usually same sex friends who just didn't like to eat alone.
Bill no longer had anyone to share a meal with. All of his acquaintances were either in nursing homes, or had moved away to live with family. He considered himself lucky that even at his age he was still active--he wasn't ready to run a marathon, but he could walk the several blocks to this buffet.
He filled his plate and regained his seat near the window. He enjoyed looking outside as he ate. The venue was still sparsely occupied, but that would change shortly when the shuttle from the retirement center arrived bringing the residents who enjoying actually going out to eat.
The shuttle arrived moments later and a couple of dozen seniors poured into the building. There was mostly women in the crowd. As Bill aged, he noticed that there were more and more older women than older men out and about. He wasn't sure if the men just didn't like leaving their homes, or if women lived longer than men. For whatever reason there were about three or four senior women to every senior man at every public place he visited.
He enjoyed checking out the patrons too. In his younger days, he called it people watching and he would make up stories about what sort of life the people he saw lived, based on what he saw. Now he searched for the women he found attractive. He tried to be discreet, but inside his own head, he knew he was a dirty old man. His fantasy life was part of the reason he ate lunch here every day.
He had been checking out the women who just arrived as they loaded their plates at the buffet and found seats, when one of the ladies he'd noted before now stood in front of him.
"Do you mind sharing your table?" she asked.
Bill found himself speechless. People here did not share tables with people they didn't know, besides this woman was the star of one of his private fantasies.
"Ah.. sure. Help yourself," he responded after a too long pause.
"Thanks. My granddaughter insisted that I meet new people and to tell you the truth, I've noticed you here before," she explained as she set down her plate and sat down. "I'm Susan, by the way and I live in the retirement center down the road, but I'm sure you knew that. I try to catch the shuttle here every day, just to get out of that building and see something new. The food here is pretty good and very affordable."
"Hi, I'm Bill and I live a few blocks from here. I walk here for the exercise and like you, to get a change of scenery. I agree that that food isn't too bad and not too expensive. I've noticed you too, getting off the shuttle. How do you like the retirement home? Do they allow you to leave and maybe go for a walk, or are you more or less a prisoner there?" He responded.
"We're not prisoners, but there isn't a lot around that is close enough to walk to and the area around the center is not any place I'd like to just take a leisurely stroll," she admitted.
"Are you opposed to taking the bus to go places?" He asked.
"I don't know the area and don't know anyplace to go. They take us out sight-seeing a couple of times a week, but that's not the same as being on your own. The center has bus schedules and directions to various places of interest, but I guess you could say I'm a bit afraid to go by myself. That's why my granddaughter insisted I get out of my rut, her words.
"If you're interested in going for walks and maybe exploring a bit, I could meet you here and show you around a bit and make sure you got back home using the bus," Bill offered. He had no idea what made him offer to go on a date with her, other than the fact that his mind had its own ideas of what time with an attractive woman could be like.
"I think the center offers bus passes that makes riding the bus almost free," she replied.
"I'm sure they do. I get a pass every month for about ten dollars and you can ride the bus anywhere you want to go. That is the senior rate, I like that they encourage seniors to be more mobile." Bill added. "Why don't you get a pass and tomorrow I'll take you for a walk around the neighborhood and look at everyone's garden. How far can you walk? I'm thinking of about a mile long walk," Bill suggested.
"The center has a gym and I use the treadmill most days. I can do three to four miles, so a one-mile walk should be no problem. I am looking forward to seeing the neighborhood gardens. I had a flower garden back at my old house and I do miss it," Susan shared.
Bill and Susan shared a pleasant lunch. She got back on her shuttle and he headed back home. They each looked forward to getting together tomorrow.
Susan asked about a bus pass and after paying her ten dollars was the proud recipient of a magic ticket that spelled freedom to her. She also picked up a bus schedule and a few of the fliers for places of interest nearby. She spent her afternoon getting familiar with the bus routes and the locations of places she might want to visit.
Bill went home and allowed his mind free rein to explore what he and Susan could do together. He cautioned himself not to push too hard, but every time he thought of her it was without her clothes.
He looked forward to introducing her to what the bus could offer. He still had a driver's license, but gave up owning a car years ago. The upkeep and insurance were just far too expensive and he rarely had anywhere far to go. The bus took him anywhere he wanted to go at a fraction of the cost of a car.
He walked to the buffet the next morning hoping to see Susan again. The shuttle from the retirement center hadn't arrived yet so Bill filled his plate and took his normal seat near the window. He no sooner sat down than he saw the shuttle arrive and dozens of seniors exit and walk across the parking lot. He saw Susan walk towards the open door as thoughts of her topless filled his mind.
Susan approached the table he secured and placed her ticket on it. "I got a bus pass and already told the driver I would not be going back with them. I'll tell you all about it after I get my lunch," she offered as a greeting.
Bill watched as she walked away and got aroused watching the sway of her walk.
Susan felt she was being watched and turned slightly to see Bill leering at her. She had noticed before she approached him yesterday that he had been watching her over the past several weeks. Like most women she knew when men ogled her, in her younger days most of those men were crude and their gaze was unwelcomed. Now that she was older, not only did she know how to keep these men in check but she felt a bit flattered that her body was still worth staring at.
She was not interested is a quick sexual fling as his demeaner indicated was his goal. She was not opposed to a romantic relationship, but she was really only interested in a friend to share interest. She had enough experience to know how to keep him interested without actually teasing him. She filled her plate and headed back to the table.
"I did as you suggested yesterday and got a bus pass. It was easier than I thought it would be. I also picked up a bus schedule for this area and a couple of fliers of interesting places to spend an afternoon. You suggested a walk around here to see the neighborhood gardens. Are you still willing to guide me though your neighborhood?" Susan asked Bill.
"Sounds great. As soon as we eat, we can walk around a bit. There are several front yards where the owners go all out on their gardens. Do you like roses? I know of two yards that have at least a dozen roses in their front yards that they are tending almost every day. If you ask, the woman will gladly give you a rose," Bill shared.
They chatted more about the walk and about the information Susan had gotten about the bus routes and schedules. She was impressed about how many interesting sights were just about a ten or fifteen minute bus ride away.
They finished their lunch and headed out for a leisurely walk exploring the various landscapes. Bill started the compliments shortly after they left the building. "I really like the top you are wearing," he said.
